Book 6: Chapter 91: Carefully Clearing The Path Ahead (part 1)

Invincible power, but a fragile soul—that was the Dragon Eater’s woe.

Driven by greed, Gerald devised what he thought was a perfect scheme: the Puppet Plan.

He lured the innocent girl in, and she walked straight into his trap, defenseless.

Then he betrayed her.

Gerald separated her soul from her body, intending to enslave her through ancient incantations. But the resistance he met was far greater than expected.

In truth, her hatred, born from that betrayal, became the greatest barrier to his control.

She refused to yield. She would rather die than submit.

Enraged but unable to fully dominate her, Gerald crafted Puppet Plan 2.0.

But before he could act on it, disaster struck.

The girl’s family came searching for her.

Knowing that returning her would spell his end, Gerald fled.

In their fury, her family unleashed their wrath on the dragons.

The dragons resisted with all their might until they were ultimately annihilated.

The foreign monsters, later known as “Dragon Eaters” because of this war, devoured everything the dragons had. But they never found what they were looking for.

So they continued their search deeper into the Great World.

One side saw only destruction and aggression.

The other believed the enemy would never surrender their family member.

Thus began a war that swept across half the Great World.

As the Dragon Eaters were being held back by the Great World’s powerhouses, Gerald secretly returned to the ancestral lands with the girl.

But there, he was caught red-handed by the Dragon Queen who had just returned.

She learned the truth. In her fury, she nearly destroyed Gerald’s body and soul.

Yet, at the final moment… she held back. Perhaps, as she later admitted, it was cowardice.

She feared being the last dragon alive.

To save himself, Gerald spilled his plan. He pleaded for her aid and claimed that through the Dragon Eater’s power, the dragons could be revived.

And during that conversation… he spoke of a manipulable dreamscape.

The Dragon Queen agreed.

And so began a deception spanning nine million years.

On the sacred soil of their ancestors, within a dreamscape built by the Dragon Queen’s hand, the plan was put into motion.

They first located a soul from another world—one highly compatible with the Dragon Eater. Then they transplanted it into the Dragon Eater’s body.

That soul was made to reincarnate as the Dragon Princess, again and again inside the Dragon Queen’s dream, repeatedly experiencing soul-level rejection.

But gradually, the soul and the body began to adapt. Their mutual compatibility rose with every cycle… Until they became one.

This forging of soul and flesh could only be carried out inside the Dragon Eater’s body. Its immortal and indestructible body was the only vessel capable of enduring nine million years of integration.

And once harmony was achieved, Gerald would erase the soul’s remaining will.

A perfect puppet possessing the Dragon Eater’s power would then be born, entirely under his control!

It was a perfect plan. No one would find out what was happening within the Dragon Queen’s dreamscape.

And now, nine million years later, the soul’s rejection had finally passed the impossible three-year threshold.

This meant things would go smoothly from now on.

Just one more cycle, and the fusion would be complete.

But at the final, most critical moment, the Dragon Queen—the architect of the dreamscape… had betrayed him?

“Because I’ve changed my mind.”

The Dragon Queen’s voice rang out, cold and resolute.

“I no longer wish for this ridiculous plan to continue.”

“Now? At the final moment?” Gerald stared at her in disbelief. “Even if it means waking from the dream you treasure most? Even if it means abandoning your precious ‘subjects’?”

“It doesn’t matter. Whether the dream ends or the illusion fades… it no longer matters.” Her voice softened, almost like she was trying to convince herself.

In a barely audible voice, she murmured, “Because I’ve found something far more important.”

“Something more important? What could possibly be more important than—” Gerald’s voice trailed off as he suddenly froze.

His dragon features contorted with disbelief as a horrifying realization dawned on him.

“Don’t tell me… Regalis… don’t tell me you’ve developed feelings for that little brat.”

The Dragon Queen lowered her gaze and remained silent.

But her silence spoke volumes, and Gerald exploded.

“Are you insane? Snap out of it, Regalis! That brat isn’t your daughter! She’s a Dragon Eater—one of the very creatures you’ve hated most!”

“You can’t be treating her as your own daughter! Regalis, how naive are you to be taking this game seriously? Is this really you? Are you still the same cold-blooded Dragon Queen who overthrew her own ancestor without hesitation?”

“Remember who you were nine million years ago! Remember what that brat really is! You were never meant to share a bond! Both of you are destined to—”

“Enough.” The Dragon Queen cut him off coldly.

“No, not before I scold you back to your senses—”

“I said… ENOUGH!”

A wave of bone-deep chill surged through Gerald. In that moment, he finally saw what had been hiding behind her still, bottomless gaze.

It was… murderous intent!

“Wait. You’re not actually thinking of…”

For the first time, true fear seized Gerald.

Because he finally understood that if the Dragon Queen truly cared for that girl, then the person she wanted to kill most right now…

Was him.

That would explain why she exposed the Dragon Eater and lured his true form to this place.

“Sweet dream, loyal subjects… they’re relics of a dead age. I used to be trapped in them, drowning in illusions that could never be real.”

“But illusions are just that—empty phantoms. They vanish with time. They redeem nothing. So I must let go and move on. But the road ahead is still rough, and someone must pave the way.”

She walked toward Gerald, one slow step at a time, until she stood before his massive dragon form. Reaching out, she touched his cold scales.

The sensation was… nostalgic.

“You told me to remember who I was nine million years ago. But Gerald, you forget something. If I were still that merciless creature… you would’ve been torn to pieces long ago for your sins.”
