Chapter 279: Chapter 278 Cleanup Operation
Chapter 279 -278 Cleanup Operation
The night continued.
On a secluded street in White Stone City, two figures appeared—Suo Men and Mu Konni.
The two of them walked while conversing in low voices.
Mu Konni spoke out, slightly complaining, “If you ask me, what you did to that guy at the auction was completely unnecessary.”
“It was to ensure the accuracy of the information,” Suo Men said.
“But the problem is, the message we got was worthless—we had already guessed it. The ‘confidential’ book was indeed handed over to that kid by the auction house, but somehow, the kid lost it.”
“…” Suo Men fell silent for a while, then said, “Regardless, we need to be cautious about this matter. Once we complete today’s task, I have to report and explain the situation.”
“Is it really such a big deal?” Mu Konni rolled her eyes and expressed contempt.
“This is not making a fuss; it’s the organization’s rule,” Suo Men said. “Though I know many people upstairs are just going through the motions, and even if I report, they might not read it. But as long as I have done my part, they can’t blame me if something goes wrong.”
“Whatever.” Mu Konni shrugged nonchalantly, and glanced ahead, “Oh, by the way, have we arrived? The target’s in this house, right?”
As she spoke, Mu Konni stopped in front of a small courtyard built of white stones.
Suo Men followed and stopped as well, took a look at the courtyard, and nodded, “Yes, indeed.”
“Good, let’s get the job done quickly and rest early,” Mu Konni said as she stepped forward to the courtyard door and knocked.
…
Inside the courtyard, a spacious study room was brightly lit by numerous candles.
In the middle of the room, there was a table on which lay many gears, metal sheets, metal wires, and other parts.
An elderly man with a face full of wrinkles was hunched over, tinkering with these components. As he fiddled, a fist-sized precision mechanical device gradually took shape.
After a moment, the craftsman finished assembling the device and placed it on the tabletop. He pressed something, and numerous gears on the device began to turn, making a “click-clack-click-clack” sound.
“Phew—”
The elderly man with a wrinkled face watched the device and let out a long satisfied breath. Just then, the courtyard door was knocked.
“Bang, bang, bang! Bang, bang, bang!”
“Hmm?” The elder’s eyes flashed with confusion, wondering who would come to find him so late.
Glancing at the steadily operating device, the old man, unable to guess the identity or intention of the knocker, frowned and pushed open the room door, stepping out.
Reaching the courtyard door, the old man creaked it open and looked outside, seeing only darkness and no one on the deserted street.
With a deep frown, the old man shut the courtyard door and muttered to himself as he returned to the study.

“Really, the kids nowadays are getting more and more annoying. Staying up late, knocking on doors, playing pranks,” the old man grumbled as he entered the study. “It’s just that they weren’t caught by me, otherwise I’d certainly spank them hard… Gah!”
The old man’s rant came to an abrupt halt because he saw that two people, a man and a woman, had appeared out of nowhere in his study.
The woman was curiously holding the mechanical device he had assembled, while the man was rudely rummaging through the things in his room.
“You!” The old man’s eyes widened, feeling a surge of anger boiling up as he yelled out, “You two thieves, when did you come in! Get out… get out now! You… you bitch, don’t touch my treasure, and you damn guy, stop going through my books and scrolls.”
Despite the old man’s shouting, the man and woman were unfazed and continued their business, completely disregarding him.
The old man was furious, his eyes searching the room until he saw a black wooden cane in the corner. Seizing it, he fiercely aimed it at the woman. At this moment, the elder had no sympathy for the delicate, only the intention to knock down the woman who dared to touch his treasure and snatch it back.
But as he swung the wooden cane with all his might, the woman reached out with a light flick of her hand, and with a “whir,” the cane shattered in mid-air.
“You! This!” The old man’s eyes bulged as he clutched the small remaining piece of his wooden cane, looking from the woman to the man, and realizing something, “Are you… wizards?”
No one answered him.
The man leafed through several Papyrus Scrolls on the bookshelf, walked over, shook one open in front of the old man’s eyes, and asked, “The contents of this scroll are what you’ve been studying, aren’t they?”
“Uh…”
“That’s good.” With a flick of his hand, the scroll vanished without a trace.
At that moment, the woman holding the mechanical creation let out a light laugh, clenched her hand, and the device she held suddenly deformed violently. Gears, metal wires, and all kinds of parts that had been perfectly embedded in the mechanism scattered in all directions with a clatter.
“No!” The old man saw this, his eyes nearly splitting, his entire body trembling, not knowing whether it was rage or fear, he yelled at the two, “Who exactly are you?! Why are you doing this?!”
The man finally answered, “We are the ones who have come to kill you. As for why, it’s simple… well, some things, some people, should not exist in this world.”
“But…”
“There are no buts, goodbye.” The man said, striding forward until he stood in front of the old man and gently tapped him between the eyebrows.
The old man jolted violently, his body stiffly fell backward, and with a “thump,” he landed on the ground, a hole bleeding profusely in the center of his forehead.
The man shook his head slightly, drew a line in the air with his finger, and a ball of golden Flames emerged.
The next instant, with a flick of his finger, the Flames shot out, floating in mid-air, burning quietly.
“Let’s go,” the man said to the woman.
“Got it,” the woman replied, walking out of the study and following the man out of the courtyard.
Not long after, flames several meters high rose from the courtyard, burning everything to the ground, the light of the fire clearly visible for kilometers around.
…
“Shush, shush!”
Two Black Shadows streaked through the night, landing on the street and squinting at the burning courtyard.
“Trouble again,” the first Black Shadow shook his head and sighed.
“Things have been uneasy lately,” the second Black Shadow said in a grave tone, “Some people in the city seem to need a lesson.”
“Let’s just hope this incident doesn’t lead to those people spreading any strange rumors,” the first Black Shadow expressed his concern.
“No use worrying about strange rumors, we just need to focus on what we are doing,” the second Black Shadow seemed more resigned, “Well, the situation isn’t dire, we’ll let the rest investigate slowly, we can leave.”
“Mm,” the first Black Shadow nodded, about to turn and leave with the second one.
However, just a few steps into their departure, something suddenly occurred to the second Black Shadow, who abruptly turned around, smacked his forehead and exclaimed, “Ah, I almost forgot.”
With that, he waved his hand, and a silver-white light shot forth into the blazing Flames.
Wrapped in the silver-white light was an Ice Core the size of a cherry. As soon as it touched the Flames, it exploded with a “bang,” and the entire courtyard was filled with snowflakes as fine as goose feathers, rapidly cooling the temperature and brutally suppressing and extinguishing the fire, leaving a thin layer of ice across the courtyard’s surface.
The second Black Shadow looked on in satisfaction and nodded, “Hmm, that should do it, we can really leave now.”
“Uh…”
“Shush, shush!”
The two Black Shadows leapt into the air, streaking away into the distance in the night.
