"Grrrr…"

Letting out low, predatory growls of hunger, the shadowmaws slowly closed in on the two youths.

Numbering in twelve, the dark creatures advanced cautiously towards them, almost as if gauging the strength of their enemy.

Their dark purple tendrils of energy simultaneously also grew by the second, indicating that they were preparing for a joint attack.

Considering they were B-ranked monsters with fairly average intelligence, they knew that rushing in, even after they hadn’t been ’fed’ for months now, was a reckless decision.

Especially when an unfamiliar yet terrifying wave of energy was also emanating from their prey.

But at the very least, the shadowmaws, with their primitively sharpened senses and intelligence, genuinely believed that they still had a bigger advantage over the youths in the darkness of the room.

Adding to that, was the fact that physical attacks were almost useless against them due to their shadow-like abilities and one other surefire trump card they had when things went south for them.

And then, after a short few seconds of ever-increasing dangerous and palpable tension, the creatures of darkness all lunged at the youths instantly, their gaping maws of razor sharp teeth wide open and poised to dig into human flesh.

In an unexpected turn of events for the shadowmaws though, the reaction time of their preys were instantaneous.

Flynn, not in the mood to play around for a single second, had himself transformed into a thin pale-blue hue of light, his formless katana cleaving through the bodies of the dark creatures.

-Swish! Swish! Swish!

Like hot knife through butter, his weapon dissected the shadowmaws cleanly in half, the creatures dissipating into thin air as he reappeared and disappeared like a flashlight in the darkness of the room.

The green emerald-eyed youth, also wasted no time in dishing out the pain as his greatsword, moving at a speed inconceivable to the naked eye, cleaved through, six of the shadowmaws in the fraction of a second.

But as if mocking them for their efforts, the creatures whom they thought they had dispatched of, instantly reattached their bodies together as the tendrils of purple energy joined them together, almost as if the strings of a marionette were at play.

’That’s one of the things that makes them so bloody annoying to deal with!’ Flynn squinted from behind his visor.

These creatures were something Aiden had to deal with during one of his delves into a fissure in the novel and it hadn’t been a particularly fun experience for the youth.

’But, this is basically a battle of attrition’ Flynn continued while reappearing behind another shadowmaw and beheading it in an instant.

’As long as we’re able to force them to switch over to the other phase!’ he declared while disappearing just in time to dodge three other shadowmaws trying to pincer him.

The shadow-like creatures, although seemingly behaving as if they had limitless regenerative properties, also had a limit to how many times they could reattach themselves.

’Usually, it’s no more than two to three times but…’ Aiden thought to himself, sensing as one of the creatures planned to appear from directly beneath him.

’But these bastards have turned this room into an incomplete domain of sorts’ the youth gently stepped away from his previous spot just as the gaping maw of the creature appeared.

-Swoosh!

’Which means their reattachment may have increased by one or two more times’ he inwardly concluded.

Instantaneously spinning on his heels, Aiden delivered a sideways spinning slash to the neck of the creature before the rest of its body appeared from the ground.

-Kach!

Although the youth wasn’t also sure, he had a very strong hunch that that was also why the room was so exceedingly dark with not a single ray of light in sight!

Keeping the fight ongoing for a few more minutes, both brothers soon realized that they wouldn’t be finding any light source anytime soon.

Getting within vicinity of his brother in the darkness, Aiden quickly asked in a fairly loud tone, although it was a bit obscured by the growls and roars of the shadowmaws.

"We don’t have any time to waste here! Any ideas Flynn?"

"I do, but it’s definitely going to be loud!" Flynn responded with a loud reply of his own.

"Do we have a choice?! That darn railgun is definitely wreaking more havoc as we speak!" Aiden deflected the sharp claws of a shadowmaw with the side of his greatsword.

The reason Flynn and Aiden hadn’t used any particularly destructive attack was because they had not wanted to draw too much attention to their presence in the dark organization’s main base.

Though, from the moment they had been dropped here instead, they had expected themselves to be swarmed by the members of the dark organization any second from back then.

However, for some odd reason or the other, The Monolith members weren’t aware of their presence just yet.

Now though, if they finally decided to use a destructively powerful attack, there was no way it wouldn’t go unnoticed.

"Alright then! We need an insanely strong attack that will scare them enough to forcefully want to switch over to the next phase!" Flynn declared this time while adding a few more words.

"They’re probably thinking they have an advantage over us, since eventually, they’ll wear us out"

"But if they notice we weren’t going all out and we are far more of a threat than they thought they could handle easily…" Flynn kept speaking, his katana piercing the skull of one of the creatures.

"They’ll be scared enough to want to assume that nasty form!" Aiden declared in completion of his younger brother’s sentence while brutally slashing another shadowmaw.

"I hate that second form though!" Aiden frowned while quickly adding to which Flynn replied immediately.

"I do too! But we won’t be leaving here anytime soon if we keep this up!"

"True!" Aiden nodded in approval, after which he then declared almost immediately.

"Very well then! On my mark, we pretend to release the first forms at full power!"

"Alright! Ready when you are!" Flynn replied decisively.

Battling with the shadow-like creatures for a few more seconds, Aiden suddenly counted down the moment he noticed he and his brother had a bit of breathing space from the shadowmaws.

"1! … 2! … Now!!!"

"{Moonveil Art – First Form: Severance}-!!"

"{Berserker Art – First Form: Whirlwind Slash}-!!"

Instantly, a violent burst of two colliding energies suddenly appeared from one corner of the room, viciously sending all the shadowmaws flying backwards with bursts of pressurized winds.

One energy had a dark-red hue to it that was violently twisting and churning the air while the other had a pale-blue hue with an almost crackling intensity to it that caused the air to vibrate with visible sparks of light.

The shadowmaws, realizing just how dangerous the attack their preys were about to release were, immediately retracted all of their darkness and shadows covering the entire room, all while also jumping into their eerily writhing dark puddles.

In an instant, the previously, abysmally dark room, was suddenly transformed into a room illuminated by bright fluorescent white lights.

At the exact same time the room brightened up, all of the shadows, darkness and writhing puddles, present in the room, converged to form one giant pool of puddle at one point in the room.

Discontinuing their weapon arts without actually releasing it, all while knowing fully well that now, they would’ve definitely alerted the members of The Monolith even if they previously hadn’t, both brothers watched an unsettling occurrence take place in the middle of the room.

The writhing puddles, darkness and shadows which had all converged into one section of the exceedingly wide room, soon began to have a small bulge slowly arise from it.

Gradually, the bulge, creepily pulling in all the surrounding shadow and darkness, kept growing longer and longer into an exceedingly tall and wide protuberance that was squirming in a disturbing manner.

And then, as if it was all just a weird ploy, the unnerving squirming of the protrusion stopped and solidified for a few seconds.

’And that, is literally just the calm before the storm’ Flynn and Aiden thought to themselves, their hands tightly gripping onto the hilts of their weapons.

As if on cue, the solidified protuberance instantly burst apart to reveal a giant shadowmaw that genuinely made Flynn and Aiden look like ants in comparison.

Its big, large eyes were now radiating a constantly swirling form of dark purple energy as opposed to the pitch-black darkness it previously had.

Long protrusions of black singular horns lined up from its forehead, along its spine, all the way down to its tails which had now separated into nine, each littered with dangerous club-like spikes on its tail ends.

"RAAARRRGGGHHH!!!"

Letting out a deafening roar that was enough to explode the average human’s eardrums, the creature finally turned its eerie gaze towards its two preys.

’S-rank monster… Abyssal Shadowmaw’ Aiden deeply frowned as he stared at the humongous monstrosity before him.

"Well then. Round two it is!" Flynn on the other hand declared while taking deep, focused breath.
