Chapter 33: Turning Point

The dust cleared after a few seconds, and Rai with blood rolling down his face was seen standing above Theron who laid unconscious on the bare ground, the energy from his Soul-Transfiguration completely wore off, but took most of the impact giving him another day to live.

After confirming no rules had been broken, the 5th’s vice captain sighed softly, then declared.

"Winner of this round, Rai Voltia!"

"Holy shit..."

"What the frickin hell?"

"I’m must admit, I didn’t expect such performance from the talentless kid. He really did surpass our expectations." The officers of the Soul-Squads, as well as the lieutenants all praised his efforts, and the hall erupted in a loud applause.

There was nothing more to say, no words could describe what they saw with their own eyes. Just like Xander, when the news about a boy who couldn’t activate a Soul-Core spread in the association, they all discarded him.

They found it implausible that someone couldn’t activate a Soul-Core, and branded him as Talentless. Humanity’s weakest Soul-Hunter.

But now, Rai changed their perspectives.

Back in the shattered sparring ground, Rai stood tall, standing above the body of the unconscious son of the Veylirs. The [Limit Break: Electric Burst Evolved] wore off immediately, returning his hair and mobility back to normal.

However, the Soul-Technique came with a huge cost. He appeared more leaner than usual, the electric burden placed on his body consumed far more stamina than he initially anticipated.

"T-tch." With a slight grunt, he fell to his knees, drained of all the stamina he had to spare. "Damn it... I knew Stormfangs Soul-Core was powerful, but using it to this extent drained all of my energy?"

He fought hard, but he couldn’t hold on to his consciousness, and he fell flat to his face.

Support Soul-Hunter’s rushed in, and they carried him out of the room.

"Hey captain..." Zarek called out to his captain, and he didn’t have his usual excited demeanor, instead, he was serious.

"What is it?"

"You sensed that energy didn’t you? That wild untamed power hiding beneath that cloak of lightning? I refuse to believe he’s a D-rank Soul-Hunter. I’m not even sure I could classify him as a B-ranked Soul-Hunter." Zarek refused to believe it, not after he singlehandedly defeated the Soul-Transfiguration.

Hiro sighed softly, the initial plan was to keep his Re-awakening a secret, but after the battle that just unfolded. It didn’t seem plausible any longer.

"To be honest... I don’t know, but one thing I can say for certain is this, whatever he is, he is not a D-rank Soul-Hunter. We intended to keep this a secret because we needed to watch and re-evaluate his strength, Rai Voltia... is an X-rank Soul-Hunter."

Kaira’s heart skipped a beat, and her eyes shot open in disbelief.

Murmurs filled the hall, and Xander gritted his teeth.

"Rai..." He whispered to himself, clenching his fist so tightly that his fingernails almost dug into his skin. "Have you been hiding this power all along?"

Zarek fell back into his chair, then he started laughing.

"You’ve got to be kidding me..." He put his palm over his face. "An X-rank Soul-Hunter? Well that does explains everything that’s happened so far. To think that another X-rank Soul-Hunter would emerge in this generation..."

"Yeah... This year’s candidates really are something else."

"Hmph." Zarek stood to his feet, then walked towards the entrance of the combat hall.

"You’re not going to watch the rest of the matches?"

"No... Just like the captain of the 4th Squad, I only had interests in one Soul-Hunter, and now that I’ve confirmed my suspicions." A wide grin spread across his face, and he glanced into the ceiling. "Our battle really will be legendary!"

..

After hours of rest which returned his stamina, the system automatically activated his skill [Shadow Recovery] and healed all abnormalities in his body, the effects of Soul-Transfiguration used on him, and even his lost weight was recovered.

Rai’s eyes widened almost as if he received the greatest shock of his life, he raised his upper body from the bed, and glanced at the room he rested in. There was an ER machine plugged to his body.

Before he was fully healed, to the Support Soul-Hunters, he was in a critical condition. But now, he was just fine.

"What happened? Where am I?"

"You’re in the assiciation’s medical center, you passed out during your battle with Theron’s strange transformation in the exams. That was quite the technique you used Rai Voltia, Limit break: Electric Burst evolved was it?" A voice spoke besides him, and he swiftly turned to his right side.

"You are..."

"Elene Castelle, we met just before the first phase of the exams began, remember?" A smile curled up the side of her lips, and she took a step closer to the bed.

"Oh, you’re that noble from before. What are you doing here?"

"Initially I just excorted that cold friend of yours, but his match came up so he had to leave. But that doesn’t matter now..." She took another step forward.

"What matters is what the hell happened back there! What was that!? I knew there was something you were hiding, but that!?"

She sensed the dark energy sealed within Rai’s cores, but at the time he hadn’t trained Stormfang’s Soul-Core to this extent, so he never obtained the Electric Burst.

"Just how on earth are you getting stronger?" She interrogated him, but her questions were the least of his concerns. Xander came to see him? Why? Of course he was as shocked as everyone but there had to be more to it. Did he perhaps regret throwing him off the team?

"I don’t know, I guess my last minute training paid off. I finally was able to develop the technique I was working on." He replied.

"Is the second phase over?"

"...The exams were postponed."

Rai’s eyes shot open. "Postponed? Why?"

For a moment, Elene remained silent, unsure of what to say, then she sighed softly and walked towards the door. "Come with me."

From her demeanor, it was something serious, then Rai carefully pulled out all the wires from his body, then he stood up from the bed, and followed behind her.

They returned to the combat room, but to Rai’s greatest surprise, he laid his eyes on something disturbing.

He found a massive hole in the middle of the combat room. "W-what?" He stuttered as he glanced into the hole.

"Shocking isn’t it?" Elene said as they both stared down into the hole.

"I’m sure you’re wondering, what on earth made such a huge hole right in the middle of the exam hall? It’s the same reason why came to see you. Xander Reymond."

"What!?" He exclaimed, glancing back at the hole then back at her. "What do you mean?"

"The person responsible for this hole in the ground and the true reason for the exams postponement, is Xander."

As she repeated her words, Rai stared back into the hole, confused. "Xander did? What do you mean?" He asked, trying to clear his confusion.

"Moments after you fell unconscious, the next fixated match was between Xander and the son of the Walkyre family. At first I was worried, but not because of his safety."

"What were you worried about?"

Elene took a deep breath, then glanced at Rai. "I met him just after the end of the first phase, but the moment I mentioned your name, something within him changed. I felt an energy I’ve never felt before, not even in the presence of the captains. Something wild... Untamed..." As Elene spoke, terror filled her eyes, her body trembled from the thought of what she witnessed hours ago.

From her reactions, Rai could tell that whatever happened here was somewhat traumatizing to her. After all, being a sensory type Soul-Hunter had it’s ups and downs.

"I see, so you’re saying whatever’s power tha-"

Then.

His eyes twitched immediately as he felt a sudden change in the atmosphere. Then he closed his eyes and let out a heavy sigh.

"It begins now huh? I just finished my exams and I don’t even have time to rest?" He exhaled deeply, then glanced over his shoulders at her. "Listen... Elene, thanks for your concerns about Xander and all but you really should be going, it’s going to be starting soon." He turned his attention to the door.

"Huh? I don’t understand, what’s going to be starting soon?"

This was the exact moment he was waiting for.

The event he trained and developed his new technique for, the turning point of his survival all hinged on this very moment.

He closed his eyes, then took a deep breath.

After a few seconds, his eyes shot open with intent. "Here it comes."
