Chapter 52: Chapter 52 What Are You?

The sound of footsteps approached when the man was still sprawled on the sofa, feigning drunkenness, unaware of who had entered. The next second, his collar was grabbed and yanked up; the force was so great he couldn’t react in time, dragged half a meter across the floor like a dead fish before he realized the danger and hurriedly opened his eyes, his complexion instantly turning deathly pale, “Pei, Pei Yu——”

He didn’t know why this man had come, and because of his guilty conscience, he couldn’t even force a smile right away.

Pei Yu sat on the coffee table, bending and stretching his long legs, the tip of his shoe just under the man’s eyes. He raised an eyebrow and curled his lips into a smile, casual in his posture, and asked in a very offhand manner, “Got a cigarette?”

Uncertain of his intentions, the man knelt on the ground, not daring to stand up, and rapidly searched his pockets to pass a cigarette and hurriedly lit it for him.

The light flickered; the faint smell of tobacco spread around. Pei Yu, biting the cigarette, said nonchalantly, “Haven’t seen you in seven years, right? You seem quite estranged from me.”

Family interactions were frequent; they had often met during childhood. However, once Pei Yu became an adult, the insignificant young master transformed into Pei Yu, Chairman Pei, and the gulf between them widened immensely, turning even a mere meeting into a luxury.

Thinking he wanted to reminisce, the man was both shocked and delighted, denying it again and again, “How could that be, I—ah!”

The cigarette butt was pressed against the back of his hand, cutting off his words abruptly. He didn’t dare to dodge, trembling with fear, unable to speak clearly.

Pei Yu lifted his eyelids, his pupils pitch-black, no trace of a smile on his face. With a slight arch of his brows and a display of haughty pride, he spoke softly but slowly, “Not estranged? I think you’ve forgotten what kind of person I am.”

The man trembled with pain, no longer daring to feign ignorance, “Pei, Pei Yu, don’t hold it against me, I was talking nonsense because I was drunk, all of it was nonsense, I apologize, I can apologize to Miss Shen!”

Pei Yu was unmoved, “Repeat exactly what you said to her, not a word missing.”

To repeat those words was like signing his own death warrant. Drenched in sweat, he wanted to hide it but didn’t dare, knowing all too well what would happen if he lied to Pei Yu again. He was forced to grit his teeth and repeat each word, without any of his previous arrogance.

As he finished repeating his words, the cigarette died out, leaving behind a few glowing ashes. Pei Yu rose to his feet and after a silent moment, tilted his head and inexplicably smiled, as he undid his cufflinks, “I, Pei Yu, am even willing to be the one to stay alone in an empty room, to let her accompany you…”

The bottle of wine that Shen Zhiyi had touched on the table was picked up again, and as Pei Yu raised his arm, it crashed onto the man’s head with a “bang.” Pieces flew everywhere. Pei Yu wiped the splashed wine from his face with the back of his hand, his gaze icy cold as he delivered a ferocious kick.

“What do you think you are?”

With one hand, he pulled on the man’s collar, and blood and flesh were muddled on his face, now littered with shards of glass. The man howled in terror, the kick from Pei Yu having been delivered with full force, breaking his ribs and causing cold sweat from the pain.

“Remember this,” Pei Yu said calmly, “let everyone know why you offended me. If another person like you shows up, you don’t need to hang around here anymore. Understand?”

It was a warning to others, these unruly weeds blustering about, and he didn’t mind removing them himself.

Having walked a distance away, Shen Zhiyi still looked back worriedly, unsure of what Pei Yu had gone in to do. The room’s soundproofing was good; he shouldn’t have heard the drunkard’s words.

Qin Xiaoran kept apologizing by her side. She had no idea that Zhao Shu would dare to cause a scene and complain at her venue, expressing dissatisfaction, “…I’ve never seen her that obsessed with Brother Pei Yu before, who knows why she suddenly acted out.”

She cautiously gauged Shen Zhiyi’s expression, “Sister Zhiyi, you must be really upset with her, right?”

Since it was her duty as the hostess to provide proper hospitality, Qin Xiaoran feared that Pei Yu would go after her brother Qin Fang if he found out, which would inevitably lead to another argument with her.

In a way, she was also pleading on Zhao Shu’s behalf. It was a long-standing friendship, and inciting Pei Yu’s wrath over this could bring trouble to the entire Zhao Family. Honestly, no one could withstand Pei Yu’s fury. In the whole Pei Family, he was the one who most resembled Father Pei. In terms of ruthlessness, he was even more formidable, which was why he had reached his current position.

Shen Zhiyi’s thoughts were brought back to the present. She didn’t say that she didn’t mind, because in truth, Zhao Shu’s words had indeed had a huge impact on her. Although in the end, it might not have been Zhao Shu’s fault.

She was distracted, understanding why Qin Xiaoran had intentionally brought up the topic.

“I won’t tell Pei Yu.”

Is that supposed to be a good thing, and why should she tell Pei Yu?

The idea of having Pei Yu backing her up—Shen Zhiyi found it amusing but also saddening; she actually knew that Zhao Shu hadn’t said anything wrong.

Pei Yu arrived late just as Qin Xiaoran began to cut the birthday cake, picked up a glass of wine from the bar, and at the same time, wrapped an arm around Shen Zhiyi’s waist, quietly sipped his drink.

“What were you doing in the private room?”

Shen Zhiyi looked up at him, noticing that he was not wearing a tie, and upon closer inspection, it appeared his shirt had been changed too—she wasn’t sure if she was just being paranoid.

Pei Yu met her gaze without evasion, eyes downcast, the ruby wine gently swaying in his glass as he slowly counter-asked, “What have you been doing in the private room?”

Not wanting to bring up the unpleasantness, and because the crazy drunkenness reminded her of things she’d rather not recall, Shen Zhiyi avoided his gaze and reached for his glass of wine, “Just had some drinks.”

Pei Yu lifted the wine glass out of her reach and still looking at her, with a slightly cold glint in his eyes, he bluntly probed, “You weren’t bullied, were you?”

Shen Zhiyi was taken aback, her long lashes trembling lightly. She pursed her lips and denied it, “No.”

She feigned nonchalance, “Why do you ask?”

Had he guessed? There were no other traces in the private room besides a drunkard, and it’s not likely that person was crazy enough to fight with him as well—she didn’t know how he could guess. Maybe her face had looked too dreadful at the time?

It was ridiculous that an actor couldn’t even control her own expression.

Having drained his glass, Pei Yu remained silent.

When he opened the door, she had looked startled, angry and panicky, yet she forcibly repressed it, as though if anyone noticed, they would think less of her—too familiar, familiar enough to make his heart ache.

He didn’t want to pressure her, but her deliberate concealment was infuriating. He couldn’t help but wonder, would she hide things from Huo Heng too? Would she turn to Huo Heng to take her side when aggrieved?

The more he thought, the more he compared, the more jealous he became.

The more he felt he was nothing in her heart.

“How come there’s a small cut on your neck?”

Shen Zhiyi gasped as she noticed the small red cut on his neck, certain she hadn’t mistaken, she reached out to touch it, frowning, “How did this happen?”

Pei Yu’s expression was indifferent as he blocked her hand and pressed the wound casually, as if it didn’t hurt at all; his fingertip smeared with blood, he seemed unconcerned and wiped it off with a tissue, “Don’t know.”

Don’t know?

He was clearly hiding it deliberately.

Shen Zhiyi realized this and fell silent as well.
