Chapter 89: Chapter 89: Do You Want Me To Be Like This?
Shen Zhiyi returned the coat to Meng Qiming, who was completely confused and did not understand what she was doing, trying to drape the coat over her shoulders again, “Zhiyi, keep the coat on.”
She shook her head and looked forward again.
Pei Yu made his way through the crowd toward her, locking eyes with her from afar before taking a glass of wine from a nearby tray.
As he approached, he glanced down at the wet stains on Shen Zhiyi’s body, stood by her side, and handed her the glass of wine.
“Need it?”
Shen Zhiyi looked up at him, his figure backlit by dazzling twilight, half of his face obscured in the dim light and indistinct, but in her eyes, Pei Yu was on the bright side.
She took the wine from his hand, walked a few steps forward, then raised her hand high and, before the man could react, poured the entire contents of the glass onto him, the wine streaming down his shirt.
No one expected her to suddenly raise her hand, except for Pei Yu.
The man was astounded, unable to fathom how Shen Zhiyi dared retaliate, and in front of everyone. How could she dare?
The humiliation enraged him, turning his face an iron shade of blue. He glared fiercely, ready to lash out, but just then, Pei Yu glanced over coldly, and at that moment, he froze as if iced, standing awkwardly and embarrassed in his spot.
Pei Yu stepped forward, took the now empty wine glass from Shen Zhiyi’s hand, and draped his own coat over her, his eyes cold and brooding as he spoke softly, “Go to room 8032 to change.”
That was his room.
Shen Zhiyi remained silent.
With a sigh of seeming exasperation, Pei Yu fastened the buttons of the coat and, touching her hand gently through the overly large sleeves, he said softly, “Please, will you?”
Shen Zhiyi kept her head down, staring at his slightly open shirt collar, still reluctant, her expression somewhat stubborn, “I don’t need it.”
She wasn’t referring to the glass of wine, nor the room to change clothes; she meant Pei Yu’s help.
She felt there should be no ties between them, wanting to set boundaries clearly as if by doing so, she could disregard the heart that was still wavering.
“I know,” Pei Yu wasn’t angry; he understood her and knew she had been wronged by others. He wouldn’t fuss over this now, “This is Xiaoran’s engagement party. It wouldn’t be right for her to worry about you, right?”
Shen Zhiyi finally looked up, her lips pursed, knowing he was making sense. Now wasn’t the time to quibble about such matters.

As he adjusted her collar comfortably, Pei Yu called over a waiter to escort her, “Go on.”
Shen Zhiyi looked back at him then glanced at the man who was still stiff in his spot, curious about how he would handle it.
“Leave it to Qin Fang,” said Pei Yu, “I won’t interfere.”
Having Qin Fang handle it was indeed less troubling than having him deal with it. Relieved, Shen Zhiyi followed the waiter away.
“Chairman Pei,” Meng Qiming looked conflicted as he withdrew his gaze that had been fixed on Shen Zhiyi, the atmosphere between the pair so intense that he could only watch from the sidelines, deducing from Shen Zhiyi’s actions that the wine spilling was no accident.
But Shen Zhiyi’s retaliation truly surprised him.
“I’ll handle this matter,” Meng Qiming volunteered, “no need to bother Qin Fang. I know this man and will make him apologize to Zhiyi.”
“Apologize?”
Pei Yu repeated the word expressionlessly, his pupils dark, his tone mocking, “An apology isn’t enough.”
Hearing the underlying implication, Meng Qiming exclaimed in shock, “Chairman Pei, you—”
Was he going to intervene?
Having received the news, Qin Xiaoran had already rushed over. Seeing Pei Yu here, she knew something was wrong. Despite the guest being someone she had invited, friends who, before her, had had many such distasteful behaviors, were secretly troublesome.
Thinking back, this was the second incident to occur in her venue. She was really afraid that Pei Yu would be upset and looked at his face cautiously, “Sister Zhiyi—”
Pei Yu didn’t respond, but said unemotionally, “Next time you invite her over, it would be best to clear out these so-called friends.”
“This is not a reminder, it’s a warning.”
Qin Xiaoran felt like crying but had no tears, lamenting her misfortune while wanting to retort, “Why care so much about someone after breaking up?”
But she dared not voice those thoughts.
Her spirits sagging, she said, “Okay, so this person…”
Should she give them a private lesson?
Pei Yu walked past her. “Don’t interfere.”
Got it, it meant that person was doomed.
Qin Xiaoran followed behind Pei Yu. “What about Sister Zhiyi, I’ll go check on her.”
Pei Yu glanced over, “You have that much free time?”
“…Not really.”
She secretly stuck out her tongue, how annoying!
Shen Zhiyi changed her clothes in the room. The skirt, a spare from Qin Xiaoran, was a bit short for her, and it felt chilly in October’s weather.
She replied to a message Qin Xiaoran had sent. The door made a soft noise as Pei Yu approached, scanned her ill-fitting skirt, and asked, “Want me to take you home?”
“No need.”
Shen Zhiyi was uncomfortable. “Xiaoran sent a car for me.”
She didn’t want to stay alone in a room with Pei Yu, as it would bring back memories of a once-similar moment. She took her changed clothes and headed out.
“Do you hate me that much?”
Pei Yu grabbed her wrist, turning cold and harsh again, his words stinging, “Didn’t we agree to part amicably? Do you have to avoid me like this?”
“Let me go.”
The grip on her hand loosened, but the warmth lingered on her skin, irrepressible, like a brand. Shen Zhiyi looked down, avoiding his gaze, “I don’t like lingering attachments, there’s no need, is there? We’re both going to start new lives.”
He would meet new people, have new lovers, maybe even a wife.
“New life…”
Chewing on those words, Pei Yu’s eyes shone with scorn. “You mean Meng Qiming, is he your idea of a new life?”
Shen Zhiyi frowned, not wanting to argue about this. She kept silent, gripping the doorknob.
The next second, Pei Yu suddenly pinned her against the wall with force, trapping her. She looked up in shock, “What are you doing?”
Her back pressed against the hallway light switch, turning off the light. Pei Yu’s face was hidden in darkness, only his shallow breaths responded to her confusion.
Shen Zhiyi tried to break free, but he held her even tighter, his eyes intense as he leaned in to kiss her under the cover of night.
She abruptly turned her head away, “Pei Yu!”
He stopped.
The distance between them was minimal, close enough to kiss intimately like lovers, yet one was dodging, and the other couldn’t move forward.
Shen Zhiyi closed her eyes, hiding the sour emotion in her eyes, “Pei Yu, don’t act like you still have feelings for me, it doesn’t suit you.”
“Then what should I be like?” Pei Yu let her go, “Like my dad, promiscuous and cold-hearted?”
“Shen Zhiyi, is that what you want from me?”
