Chapter 292: A Confrontation

"You don’t have to do this, Serena," Aiden spoke hurriedly his voice laced with worried as Serena purposefully marched toward the hospital room where Ella was being kept. She barely acknowledged him, her mind set on one thing—meeting the woman responsible for her current predicament, the one who had stolen her memories and turned her world upside down.

Ella Hawk.

Serena already knew from Aiden that Ella had confessed to everything, admitting to her crimes and expressing a willingness to accept whatever punishment came her way. She had also been the one to have apparently informed the police to come to where she had abandoned her so they had been able to find her timely.

But that didn’t change the fact that Serena needed to see her. She needed to look into the eyes of the woman who had, through her own recklessness, altered the course of her life. How could someone have been so blinded by their own foolishness that they had deceived even themselves? How had she justified her actions, convinced herself that what she was doing was right?

Serena could pretend she wasn’t angry. She could claim indifference, say that it no longer mattered. But deep down, the truth burned—she was furious. Furious at this girl’s selfishness. Furious that the girl had never once considered the consequences of her actions, not for Serena, not even for her own brother. Even if she had not planned to physically harm her, she had done nothing to prevent it either.

Aiden had already assured her that he had severed all ties with Ella, that she no longer had a place in his life. But to Serena, even that felt too merciful.

After all, Ella hadn’t just betrayed her family. She had almost killed Serena. The very least she deserved was a prison sentence. But if Aiden didn’t want that, for which she deemed him foolish, then she would let go. For now. But she would warn this girl. Threaten her to not apear in front of her in the future.

And yet, as Serena reached for the door handle, a part of her hesitated, making her worry that maybe going inside was not the best thing. But then, she suppressed the foolish part of herself. What was wrong with confronting someone who had harmed her? And it wasn’t as if she could harm her again?

She turned to Aiden, glared at him," You will not come inside!"

"But..." As he tried to protest, she cut him off with a look that had him nodding and moving back with his hands raised in surrender.

With a nod, she took a deep breath and walked into the room. And immediately frowned. Why was this place shrouded in darkness? WIth a movement of her hand, she felt around the sides of the wall for the switch and turned on a simple light. It was a night light but enough to help her see the girl on the bed.

Serena’s lips curled in disdain as she took slow steps toward the hospital bed. The dim glow of the nightlight cast eerie shadows across the room, but she had no trouble seeing Ella Hawk—awake, sitting up, and staring blankly at the wall.

For a moment, Serena stopped and simply observed her. The girl’s posture was stiff and her eyes blank. As if she was not even here.

Serena snorted, anger bubbling back to the surface. Look at her. Anyone who didn’t know better would assume she was the victim here and not the one who had orchestrated Serena’s near-death.

With deliberate slowness, she brought her hands together and clapped. Once. Twice. The sharp sound echoed in the silence. Ella flinched and her head snapping toward Serena.

The instant their eyes met, Ella’s expression transformed. Her pupils dilated, her face drained of all color, and her lips parted as if she wanted to speak but couldn’t form the words.

Serena scoffed. "What’s wrong? Surprised to see me?" Her voice was sharp and venomous. "Or maybe you thought I wouldn’t come see you?"

Ella didn’t answer. Her breath hitched, and Serena noticed that her fingers tightened around the blanket.

She took another step forward. "I came here for answers. I want to know what kind of harm I supposedly inflicted on you that made you think I deserved to die. I want to know why you helped those people kill me."

The silence stretched between them like a taut wire, ready to snap and Serena felt her anger getting hotter as she glared at the still silent girl. Dam* it! She really did look and feel like a victim, even making her own heart worry about her. Good work Serena. Sympathise with those who want to harm you, she told herself mentally as she continued to glare at Ella.

"What? Have you turned mute now?" She asked angrily.

Ella’s lips trembled. Her throat worked, but no words came out. And then, barely above a whisper, she croaked, "Gh... gh—ghost..."

Serena blinked. What?

Ella pressed herself back against the headboard, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her eyes darted wildly, as if looking for an escape.

Serena frowned. "What the hell are you talking about?"

Ella whimpered, shaking her head violently. "No... no, this isn’t real," she whispered, her voice breaking. "You... you’re dead. You’re here to haunt me, aren’t you?

Serena stiffened. A strange chill ran down her spine.

What is she talking about?

Her fingers clutched the sheets so tightly her knuckles turned white. "You’re not real. This isn’t real."

It took her a moment but she finally realized that Ella thought that Serena was a ghost. She looked down at herself. And then the place around her. Okay it was a perfect ghost setting, with her wearing a white dress and the hospital room all dark....

But it was also at this point that she realized no one had informed Ella that Serena was alive. Her eyes narrowed. Well, she could use this chance to get a confession. She raised an eyebrow and started to walk slowly towards the foot of the bed.
