Chapter 135: Might be the one

Sebastian was smiling faintly all the way back to his office until he arrived and was met with a grim-looking Matt. The little happiness he had felt with Viola, the fleeting joy that had momentarily made him forget everything, including his own problems and duty, was suddenly wiped away as Matt, exhausted and utterly drained from ending a phone call, turned to him.

"Thank the moon you’re back! She’s not backing off me until she meets you!" Matt exclaimed in exasperation, ending the call with Laila for the tenth time this afternoon, each time telling her that the Alpha was too busy to answer her calls.

Matt had come up with all sorts of lies to keep the shewolf from suspecting that the Alpha had gone to see Viola and stayed the entire night and morning without once attending to his duty. But he had run out of excuses, and now she had told him she was on her way to meet Sebastian in his office since he was too busy to come back to his place.

Sebastian’s expression turned indifferent as he flung his coat onto the office couch and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt before sitting at his desk, but Matt was quick to warn him.

"If I were you, I would take a shower before doing that, or before Laila gets here. You have another scent on you that is distinctly female, and anyone who has come close to Viola knows that’s her scent," Matt said harmlessly, sitting down on the couch while thinking if a day would ever come when he could finally be free. The responsibilities of a right-hand Beta were almost as stressful as those of an Alpha.

Especially an Alpha with double mates. To protect the one he was getting attached to from everyone, he needed to be careful. Though Matt wanted to like Viola and fully support her, it seemed he was in for double the work and trouble because of her. Sebastian was acting way too differently and somewhat clingy around her, and if it continued, many people were bound to find out and begin targeting her. Her life in Silver would become miserable, and she hadn’t even become the Luna yet.

Matt didn’t hide that thought from his friend, who had begun taking off his shirt to shower in the office bathroom. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

"Don’t you think you should lay low with Viola for now until you marry her? It’s bound to cause trouble if you keep getting distracted by her and going to her at every call, especially now, with guests soon arriving for your ceremony. I even heard that some of the Alpha diplomats from other packs will start arriving today, and you know all the guests will stay in this building, Seb."

Sebastian’s fingers paused mid-motion as he attempted to discard the remaining buttons, still savoring the last remnants of Viola’s lovely daisy scent on him before he would wash it away. Then Matt’s words settled in, and he scowled darkly.

He knew exactly what Matt was trying to hint at and warn him about. Though the warning came from a place of concern, and because they had known each other since childhood, sometimes Sebastian wished Matt wasn’t so relentlessly cautious, always reminding him of the realities he sometimes wanted to escape in order to simply enjoy life a little.

With the guests arriving and every one of them housed in this building, spies were bound to be among them. It wasn’t a hidden fact that many didn’t like him because he hadn’t acted according to their wishes or given them access to misuse the important resources of the Silver Pack.

At any given opportunity, they would try to get rid of him, but none had succeeded in those attempts for years. They had once tried to use the late Evangeline, but Evangeline hadn’t been among his mates; he had married her only because she had earned the position.

Evangeline had once been poisoned with a witch potion, an activity Sebastian had banned in the werewolves’ world, but some still turned to witch magic. Evangeline had been so sick that many had believed she would die then, until her family stepped in and found her cure, using their powerful connections.

The person who had tried to weaken him through her had quickly realized he didn’t care that much about her because she wasn’t a mate, and had left her be. Unfortunately, she had died a few months later by his hands, just like Natalie...

Sebastian felt a growing sense of nauseousness at how easily he could kill the wrong woman his prophecy rejected. He shook the unsettling feeling away.

Now that many guests would be coming to attend their wedding, there would be people who would come just for the purpose of spying on his relationship with this new Luna, just to see if she was someone they could use.

They would monitor him and plan to strike where it would hurt the most: a mate he cared about deeply, one who had no strong backing from a father or influential family, a soft target they believed they could ruin without consequence. Viola was no one’s daughter of influence.

But she was his mate, and being that was a risk in itself. Matt was warning him not to fall into the mate-puppy affection that dragged him to her all the time. If only Matt had experienced half of the mate bond, he would understand it wasn’t something easily controlled. Sebastian wanted to spend every second of every day with her.

"Not just the guests, the elders and the rest of the Kade family will also start to come for the ceremony. You should be careful how you—"

Matt didn’t finish his warning as Sebastian let his frustration take over him, and he kicked the chair in front of him angrily and growled low in his throat. "I fucking know! Back off my back, man! I’ll lay low." He gritted his teeth, ripping off the rest of his shirt buttons and tearing the shirt from his body in a furious rage, tossing it into the trash so violently that the can shook.

Matt bowed his head in submission, realizing he had poked the Alpha in the wrong way, he hadn’t intended to provoke him. He had only been cautious because he cared and worried about Sebastian, who sometimes lacked a voice of reason and sense of caution.

Sebastian immediately felt guilty at the moment of rage. He closed his eyes, running his fingers through his hair as he looked at Matt’s bowed head. Knowing he needed to cool off before speaking again, he disappeared into the adjoining bathroom to shower and clear his head of Viola’s delicious scent and the frustration he felt at the thought of potentially not being able to see her tonight.

By the time Sebastian returned, he was dressed in another pair of pants and was buttoning up his white long-sleeve shirt. Matt was still waiting in the office, going through digital documents, but now keeping to himself.

"I understand your worries, Matt," Sebastian said with a sigh, standing before the glass wall that overlooked his world. "I need to be careful if I don’t want her dead and also avoid showing people that she is one of my mates. But I just found out there’s a possibility she might be the one," he explained, speaking without turning away from the view of the clear blue sky and the sun shining brightly.

Matt quickly looked up from his tablet, frowning as Sebastian’s words made no sense to him. How could a wolfless woman be the one, the same woman the Alphas of every generation had failed to find, someone the prophecy claimed would hold the power to reveal the supreme Alpha himself?

"What do you mean?" Matt asked, setting the tablet aside and staring at Sebastian’s broad back in absolute confusion.

"Do you remember what Elder Ysara said about the prophesied mate? She gave me another clue that the rest of the Alphas never received from the prophecy, which I didn’t believe before. One of the clues is the fact that she came into this world in a pair, just like every other Alpha before me. I only found out last night that Viola has an identical twin, just like me."

Every generation of Alphas in Silver had been twins, with one carrying the strongest Alpha blood that bore the curse, but none of them knew that the prophesied mate was supposed to be a twin as well.

Matt blinked in surprise, then let out a small chuckle as he stretched the back of his neck, bewildered and unsure of what to think anymore. He finally said, "Just because she has a twin doesn’t mean she’s the one. There are many twins out there. She doesn’t have a wolf, remember? And that is the most important detail about your prophesied mate."

Sebastian’s eyes darkened. Yes, she didn’t have a wolf, the prophecy said his real mate, the one who would break the generational curse, would have one and also free him, but that didn’t mean she was completely wolfless. There had to be a real reason why she didn’t have a wolf when she has the pheromone.

"The fact that her bond with me is stronger than with any of the she-wolves I’ve met so far makes me believe she might be the one," Sebastian mused, finally turning away from the glass wall to look at Matt, who still appeared unconvinced.

Matt let out a long sigh and asked, "Before we jump to conclusions and you end up marking her to death, where is this twin sister? If she is truly identical to Viola, just like you and your twin are, then we can start to think about how this could even be possible and why she doesn’t have a wolf."
