Chapter 781: Chapter 781: A Favor

Evelyn Clayton’s eyes trembled.

After a moment, Evelyn choked out, "What... did you say?"

The male voice on the other end seemed amused by Evelyn’s reaction and let out a soft chuckle.

"If you want this recording, then do as I say."

With that, the call abruptly ended.

Listening to the disconnected tone, Evelyn furrowed her brows, trying to call back, only to be met with a mechanical female voice.

"The number you have dialed is not in service..."

Evelyn’s heart sank completely.

Suddenly, there was a gentle knock on the office door, and May walked in.

"Evelyn, human resources sent you a money tree, where do you think it should go?"

Carrying the potted money tree with joy, May walked in without noticing Evelyn’s expression at first.

After placing the pot down, May finally saw Evelyn in a daze.

"What’s wrong, Evelyn?" Seeing this, May turned solemn, "Is there something going on?"

It took a while before Evelyn came back to her senses, lowering her eyes to hide the complex thoughts within.

"Nothing, I was just thinking about having a meeting with the department today to discuss things." Evelyn casually invented an excuse.

May, being simple-minded, believed her, thinking Evelyn was worried about managing the new department.

She chuckled, "What, worried our new department will have troublemakers? Don’t worry, could anyone be harder to manage than Vivian? You handled her, what’s to fear from others?"

Evelyn’s lips twitched into a slight smile.

Seeing her expression was still off, May felt a bit worried, "Really, Evelyn, what’s up with you?"

Evelyn averted her gaze, not wanting May to keep scrutinizing her, "It’s nothing, perhaps just getting used to the new place. I’m still thinking, you go ahead and do your work. We’ll have a meeting later."

Though worried for her, Evelyn’s words left May without much to say, so she reluctantly left, glancing back every few steps.

As the door clicked shut, Evelyn slumped back into her chair.

What did that person want her to do by saying to follow their instructions?

Evelyn furrowed her brows tightly.

She really hated the feeling of being in the dark, led by someone else.

The person knew her circumstances and was able to reach her private phone number, indicating they were quite extraordinary.

It was very possible that the person was hiding right around her; she just hadn’t noticed yet...

Thoughts of this made Evelyn break out in goosebumps.

If that’s the case, she’ll have to be extremely cautious with every move from now on.

Evelyn contemplated for a while before dialing a number.

It was quickly answered.

"Lin," Evelyn’s voice was slightly heavy, "are you busy?"

"I was just going to call you, Evelyn," Lin replied cheerfully, "How are things on your side? When can I come over to start?"

Lin had been Evelyn’s assistant in Vesseria, and after returning to Vesseria, Evelyn wanted her to join Apex, but things had prevented her from handling it.

Evelyn spoke first, apologizing, "Sorry, I’ve been too busy to contact you. But I’ve arranged accommodation for you, have you settled in?"

"It’s wonderful, Evelyn," Lin giggled, "No worries, in the meantime, I have other friends here in the country. I’m really taking this as a break!"

Evelyn replied, "That’s good. I’m calling to let you know you can start preparing to come on board. But before that, I need you to do me a favor."
