Chapter 828: Chapter 828: Disconnected Number

Evelyn Clayton’s words carried a hint of politeness in their detachment, causing Shane Sinclair to feel a sudden pang in his heart.

"I didn’t mean anything by it, Evelyn." Shane spoke faster, "I’m not trying to interfere; I’m just afraid James Grant will hurt you again."

Upon hearing this, Evelyn Clayton realized her earlier words were indeed somewhat cold.

She sighed lightly, "Brother, I know. Actually, I felt bad for not discussing this with the family first. But after thinking it over, I guessed Mom wouldn’t agree, so I had to proceed first and inform later."

The words she said to Keith Donovan and James Grant about using or not using them were half from her true feelings and half meant to intimidate them.

She certainly couldn’t relay these words to Pauline Warren directly.

That would only break Pauline Warren’s heart.

And Pauline Warren was unlikely to agree to Sharon having too much contact with James Grant.

Pauline Warren considered Sharon as her real granddaughter, and the Sinclair family could all see this.

Regarding her affection towards Sharon, only Evelyn Clayton in the Sinclair family could compare with Pauline Warren.

Her stance was clear—she would not allow Sharon to have too much contact with James Grant, even to the extent that if they were to meet for a meal, Sinclair family members must be present.

Evelyn Clayton didn’t know what reaction Pauline Warren would have if she told her about that day.

In her heart, she had already regarded Pauline Warren as her own mother, and she didn’t want to make her mother sad.

Shane Sinclair was naturally aware of this aspect and understood Evelyn Clayton’s concerns.

He pondered for a moment, made up his mind, and said, "Don’t worry, I won’t tell Mom and Dad about this."

Evelyn Clayton gave him a grateful look, "Thank you, brother."

Shane Sinclair smiled, but felt a bit breathless inside.

He had never felt so much like a coward.

The person he liked was someone he couldn’t approach, only able to watch from a not-too-far nor too-close distance.

Shane Sinclair suddenly felt a pang of regret; regret for letting Pauline Warren adopt Evelyn Clayton as her daughter back then, regret for putting all his effort into changing Evelyn Clayton’s identity from Evelyn Clayton to "Shannon Sinclair."

What could he do to reverse all this?

When Shane Sinclair left the office, he didn’t say much, but the loneliness in his departing figure made Evelyn Clayton find it hard to watch.

If before she had only speculated whether Shane Sinclair had feelings for her, now she was almost fifty percent sure.

This matter was certainly difficult to handle.

Evelyn Clayton exhaled silently, turned around, and prepared to go back to her office.

Before she could close the door, Sharon hurried over.

"Sister Evelyn, there was a call to the front desk landline, asking for you. I saw you having lunch with Director Sinclair, so I didn’t disturb you."

Evelyn Clayton raised an eyebrow, "Front desk landline? Did the person say their name?"

Sharon looked puzzled, "No, after I said you were busy, they just said they’d call back later. I asked them to leave a phone number and name, but they didn’t, and just hung up."

Evelyn Clayton subconsciously frowned.

Who was being so mysterious?

As this thought flashed by, Evelyn Clayton suddenly remembered something, and her expression changed slightly.

She quickly walked towards the front desk.

The receptionist hadn’t even had a chance to greet her when she saw Evelyn Clayton rush to the landline phone.

Evelyn Clayton picked up the receiver and hit redial.

Predictably, the receiver transmitted a mechanical female voice with static—

"Sorry, the number you dialed is not in service. Please try again later."
