Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Old Monkey Returns to the Ape Star

Black Bear Sister was sensitive and vigilant.

Only because Chen Ying’s affinity was Level 100, otherwise she would have attacked already.

By almost 3:30, after Black Bear Sister replenished some energy, she held her two cubs and slept.

Chen Ying stayed with her a while longer before getting up to leave.

On the way back, by a tree hole, he saw the street rat and its girlfriend.

The young female bear had grown rounder, her fur glossy and her temperament as gentle as ever.

When she saw Chen Ying, the young female bear even generously offered him the food in her hand, inviting him to eat with her.

“I’m not hungry, thank you.”

Under the prickle-like gaze of the street rat, Chen Ying cheerfully declined the young female bear’s kindness.

This street rat never expected that, once reformed, he would become such a warm bear.

“Black Bear Sister has two little cubs now, and she’s a bit tired. Don’t go over there, be careful not to stress her out.”

A mother bear with cubs, especially one that had just given birth, is very aggressive, especially when encountering her own kind, ready to fight to the death to protect her young.

“I’ll come by often and bring her food, so don’t worry about her.”

Taking the opportunity to touch the young female bear’s soft paw, Chen Ying left under the street rat’s increasingly sharp gaze.

The street rat watched Chen Ying’s retreating figure, then turned to its girlfriend, and after sticking close to her for a while, pulled a paper bag from the tree hole she was blocking. It contained a honeycomb “solicited” from the hive.

The paper bag wasn’t very clean, with ants on it, but that’s not a problem at all for a black bear. The ants are edible too, high in protein, and delicious.

It came and went like the wind, tossing the paper bag into Black Bear Sister’s den and leaving, staying no more than three seconds total.

Black Bear Sister, vigilant inside the cave, was unexpectedly hit in the face with the paper bag and was about to get angry, but then she smelled the sweet scent.

Tearing and biting, she opened the paper bag, and the sweet smell of a large chunk of honeycomb instantly calmed Black Bear Sister down.

Forget it, a good bear doesn’t stoop to the level of a street rat.

Jinya and Little Jin hadn’t gone back. After finishing the deer, they curled up together on a big tree, keeping a vigil for Chen Ying over Black Bear Sister.

It would be about a month after the little bear cubs were born before they would open their eyes, and only when the weather fully warmed up would they start venturing out of the nest with their mother.

During this period, the mother bear would basically not leave the den, relying entirely on the fat she had stored up to get through the early stages of raising the cubs.

Everyone had different diets, and Jinya wanted to help with feeding but couldn’t. Fortunately, although Black Bear Sister was very cautious of other predators, she still allowed these few familiar faces to come a bit closer.

But only to within three meters of the den entrance—any closer and she would start feeling the urge to attack.

Returning from Black Bear Sister’s place and after tidying up, it was almost dawn.

He settled the Old Monkey into the observation room’s cage comfortably and turned on the surveillance camera. Chen Ying planned to catch some sleep before taking care of the fluffy ones again.

The cage door wasn’t closed and the observation room door was only shut, not locked.

The next day Chen Ying and Old Gao didn’t wake up until almost ten. When they turned on the video, their sweat broke out in fright.

Old Monkey had somehow left the observation room, and only the corner of its blanket hung on the door.

Grabbing his jacket haphazardly, Chen Ying rushed downstairs. By the animal shed, on Old Monkey’s favorite tree, he saw the old monkey with eyes closed.

Beside it, Little Monkey sat obediently, grooming its fur.

On another tree, Leo and the Little Cub had nestled themselves amidst the branches and were sleeping soundly, oblivious to everything else.

The morning sun was warm, and the scene was heartwarming, but Chen Ying’s eyes turned red.

In the afternoon, people from the center came to take the Old Monkey away.

As they were leaving, the Little Monkey stood atop the tree, calling out heartbreakingly while Leo and the Little Cub clung to each other, watching their little friend with faces full of worry.

Chen Ying called Suo Wang to ask about the monkey troop at Streamstone Beach.

“They’re doing well, I just went there the day before yesterday and there was a new Little Monkey; no one even knew when it was born.”

Suo Wang was slurping his instant noodles, baffled by Chen Ying’s call.

“Are you worried? How about I go there this afternoon and shoot some videos for you?”

“No, I want to try and see if we can integrate a Little Monkey into their troop.”

Suo Wang knew that Chen Ying had an orphaned Little Monkey, which had been rescued and had not yet been sent to a zoo.

“A juvenile Little Monkey, can it really make it?” Suo Wang was a bit concerned.

Chen Ying was worried too, but he had to try nonetheless.

Monkeys are highly social animals; they couldn’t possibly live with him forever, that would go against the very spirit of animal rescue.

If it truly couldn’t integrate into the group, then the only option would be to send it to the zoo.

Chen Ying made arrangements with Suo Wang to come over about the fourth day of the lunar new year. If the Little Monkey couldn’t be released back, then it would have to be taken to the rescue center to await a new placement.

In the two days since the Old Monkey had been taken, the Little Monkey was very depressed, always sitting alone on the stone platform where the Old Monkey used to stay, hugging its blanket and uninterested in food, visibly losing weight.

Little Sen returned on the morning of the third day of the lunar new year and, seeing the Little Monkey in such a state, suggested they go to Suo Wang’s earlier than planned.

“Even if you plan to return it to the wild, there needs to be a process in place. Brother Ying, you still have to visit your family in the city, it’s better to go sooner, to spend more time with it.”

Little Sen’s advice made sense. Chen Ying gave instructions for the next few days, then took the Little Monkey and drove in Old Gao’s car to the Gula Gully Plateau police station.

They were in luck; there was no snowfall on the way, and the road had been cleared, so driving with anti-skid chains posed no big problem.

They arrived at the highland grassland gathering point with utmost care. As soon as they parked the car, the uncle came over to pick them up and insisted that Chen Ying stay with his family for the night, planning to call friends over in the evening for a meal with meat and drinks.

When the uncle heard that Chen Ying wanted to check on the monkey troop at Streamstone Beach first, he advised against driving and suggested riding a horse would be more convenient.

Actually riding a horse with the Little Monkey for the first time, Chen Ying was truly tense, gripping with his toes.

These were not the tourist-friendly, highly secure horses one finds in scenic areas—these horses, when they ran, were a sight to behold!

The kind of sight that felt like it could peel the skin right off your face with the wind.

The uncle saw Chen Ying’s discomfort, laughed heartily, mounted a horse himself, and personally coached Chen Ying.

It took almost two hours, but Chen finally managed to control the horse’s speed, albeit precariously.

Moreover, he discovered that his affinity with animals was quite effective with horses.

The horse he was riding seemed to sense his nervousness, snorted softly, and trotted gently, sparing him from the jolting that the uncle had warned about.

Huh, it wasn’t so difficult after all.

If it weren’t for the need to get serious things done, Chen Ying could have become completely absorbed in the sport of horseback riding.

The uncle and a few of the herder brothers accompanied him to Streamstone Beach. The others didn’t approach the monkey troop, with only the uncle following Chen Ying.

The Little Monkey had huddled fearfully in Chen Ying’s arms the whole way, but upon arriving at the destination, it saw many specimens of its own kind and couldn’t resist sticking out its little head, its large eyes unblinking as it watched the lively troop of monkeys.
