Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 343 - 341: Dare to Behave Badly, I’ll Break Your Legs (Vote for Me)
A few people heard the news, exchanged glances, and then turned their gaze back to the two hosts.
"We just found out too. Let me go ask about the situation," the male host quickly explained, and got up to make a phone call.
The village chief smiled but said nothing more.
The arrival of the TV program crew was meant to bring popularity and income to their village; he really shouldn’t have said those extra few words earlier.
"Uncle, does the tiger come to your village every year?" Chen Ying asked as if she hadn’t noticed the expressions of the others, pressing the village chief for an answer, "I’ve seen the reports they submitted, mentioning there were a few sightings on the north side of the village. In your experience, do you think it’s the same one?"
"My experience? It feels like it’s one tiger. But I’m not an expert; they all look similar to me, haha."
Chen Ying chuckled along with him and clinked glasses with the village chief.
"Uncle, one more question. Are there many roe deer around here? Besides Big Tiger, are there other rare animals? It’s not easy for us to come all this way. If we can’t film the tiger, we could at least shoot some other animals, right? Can’t come all this way for nothing."
The village chief hesitated for a moment, then glanced at the cadre stationed in the village.
Cadre Lin quickly took over the conversation.
"Our wildlife protection efforts have been going quite well here. Those sika deer you saw earlier, and if you go further north, there’s a pack of wild pigs. Oh, and in the summer, one of our villagers saw a Northeast Leopard nearby."
Chen Ying quickly jotted down the information and inquired about the distribution of other animals.
As they were talking, someone rushed in.
"Uncle, uncle, Cadre Lin, Qian Er’s wife’s cow can’t deliver its calf; it might not make it. Our village veterinarian says he can’t do anything. I heard your family has an expert, so they sent me to ask."
Brother Hai and Li Yu were both stunned. Experts hadn’t helped deliver calves before, had they?
Chen Ying reacted differently. She immediately stood up, "I’ll go have a look."
"Uh, Dr. Chen, have you ever helped deliver a calf?"
"Regular cows, no, but I’ve delivered yak calves."
Wow, yaks!
Brother Hai and Li Yu exchanged a look, then turned to the hosts.
What are you waiting for, let’s go.
A crowd hurried to Qian Er’s wife’s place. The cowshed was already surrounded by many people, some actively offering their help.
Chen Ying squeezed in and saw the calf was half-out and stuck in the wrong position.
"Hello, expert, we can’t push the calf back, nor can we pull it out. We’ll have to do a cesarean section."
He was alone and couldn’t perform the cesarean surgery, and his assistant had taken the day off; they hadn’t anticipated a cow having birthing complications.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Chen Ying donned a brand-new waterproof apron, washed his hands thoroughly, asked people to stand back, and performed the surgery on the mother cow with the help of the village veterinarian.
The camera operator kept his lens trained on the cowshed.
Brother Hai watched for a while, nodding non-stop, "Dr. Chen’s skills are unquestionable, I’ve seen many veterinarians, and while there are some as skilled as him, I haven’t seen a young vet who is as decisive and efficient as he is."
Giving a thumbs up, Brother Hai continued to watch the surgery.
Although it was their first time working together, they coordinated very well, and the operation was a success.
The calf was still alive, but it needed a couple of days of good care.
The follow-up care was naturally the veterinarian’s responsibility. Chen Ying went to change clothes and wash his hands, and before he could speak with Brother Hai and the others, an alarm sounded throughout the village.
"The Northeast Tiger has entered the village, the Northeast Tiger has entered the village. All units and households, hide immediately, do not approach the Northeast Tiger."
The alarm played three times, and without a word, Chen Ying and the others ran. They hadn’t gone far before they saw the village cadres blocking several village roads with vehicles to prevent the Northeast Tiger from attacking people.
Three of them!
Chen Ying and the others were stunned. They never show up until they all come as a family.
Clearly, it was a tiger mother with her two half-grown cubs.
The tiger cubs, two-thirds the size of their mother, moved with the naive playfulness typical of young animals. Even though they entered the village on such serious business as looking for food, they were still frolicking and pouncing on each other as they ran.
Suddenly, Chen Ying picked up a pair of binoculars and focused on the golden mother and her cubs.
"Brother Hai, take a look at the cub on the left. Its right hind leg seems a bit off."
Upon hearing this, Brother Hai immediately looked closely, and after a few minutes, he nodded solemnly.
"It does seem off, like it healed improperly after a fracture."
"I suspect that after the fracture, the bone did not set properly, and it healed deformed naturally."
Although Li Yu was a science popularizer with a big following, he could identify species, but observing individual conditions, he was not so clear.
"What do we do now? Should we anesthetize it and take it for surgery?"
If possible, of course, that would be fine, but the tiger mother probably wouldn’t be too happy about them taking her child away.
Chen Ying, stroking his chin, decided to further observe the situation.
With so many eyes on him, if he went to communicate with the tiger mother, he’d definitely look a bit off in the eyes of the others.
The tiger mother approached Qian Er’s wife’s house, likely attracted by the scent of the mother cow giving birth.
Calf meat is the most tender, a fine meal for her two cubs.
But whatever the tiger mother’s plan, Qian Er’s wife and the mother cow were unlikely to comply willingly.
Blocked by cars, the tiger mother tried several times to find a way to cross but couldn’t, reluctantly turned around, and headed toward another yard she had previously eyed.
Stepping onto the table outside the courtyard, Chen Ying easily jumped over the low wall and went around to the side, where he forcefully broke the wooden door and started a self-serve feast with the two kids.
The female homeowner was so angry that she wiped away her tears inside the house, not daring to rush out and drive away the three tigers.
Ordinarily, she was scared of just one, let alone three. If the tigers went berserk, it was better to lose livestock than human lives.
She didn’t dare confront them, but Chen Ying did.
Checking the time, Chen Ying picked up an iron basin and a pair of fire tongs and started to make noise at the entrance of the courtyard.
While banging, he also shouted loudly, quickly drawing out the three tigers.
All three tigers had bloody muzzles.
After taking a look at Chen Ying, the tiger mother turned around twice and dragged out the half-eaten sheep she hadn’t finished.
The sheep was a ewe, raised to produce milk to nourish the household’s children, but now it served to nourish the tigers instead.
The tigers dragged away the sheep as the village cadres quickly took photos to ascertain the loss. Once the tigers left, the household could receive compensation from special funds.
The money wasn’t much, but it was better than getting nothing at all.
Chen Ying mounted his motorcycle, leading the tigers out of the village.
Actually, this was a poor example to set.
Tigers would subconsciously chase running people and vehicles, and tigers are fast—humans can’t outrun a Northeast Tiger.
Didn’t a report come out in the past couple of years about someone encountering a Northeast Tiger while driving? They thought they were safe in the car, but after a swat of the tiger’s paw shattered the glass, they fled their vehicle in terror.
Chen Ying dared to do this because he was confident the Northeast Tiger would not harm him.
And he also needed to discuss with the tiger mother about the tiger cub’s orthopedic surgery.
Moreover, Northeast Tigers generally hunted larger animals because they needed a lot of food, and hunting in winter consumed a great deal of energy. If they hunted small prey, it wouldn’t be enough for a single meal, wasting their energy and still leaving them hungry—an unsatisfactory cost-benefit situation.
Arriving at the village entrance, Chen Ying parked his bike and quickly climbed up a tree.
Despite their size, Northeast Tigers can’t climb trees, and that was another reason behind Chen Ying’s boldness in leading them away.
"Hey, Tiger mother, let’s negotiate. I’ll come down, and you don’t bite me, okay? I want to check your kid’s leg; maybe I could help it recover."
After putting down the sheep, the tiger mother stared intensely at Chen Ying for almost five minutes before finally growling.
"If you don’t fix it, I’ll bite you to death." frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
Gee, what a temperamental tiger mother. Her cubs’ lives must be quite difficult.
Chen Ying glanced at Brother Hai and the veterinarian who were already in hiding nearby. After they gave him a signal, he jumped down from the tree.
The tiger mother suddenly stepped forward and roared at Chen Ying.
Chen Ying jumped back in surprise and fell over backward.
The tiger mother revealed an "evil" smile, seemingly proud of her successful prank.
The two tiger cubs didn’t participate in their mother’s childish antics; they were too busy eating, fearing that a glance away would mean one less bite.
Chen Ying waited for the tiger mother to lie down and get used to his scent before slowly approaching the cub.
He didn’t rush to touch it but observed it first.
Indeed, he spotted an old injury.
When the cub had almost finished eating, Chen Ying tentatively touched its spine.
The cub turned to bite, but a roar from its mother scared it into silence.
Seizing the opportunity, Chen Ying rubbed its ears and quickly felt the bones in its hind limbs.
The cub looked confused, standing on three legs and looking up at Chen Ying, uncertain whether to struggle.
It didn’t hurt, but the position felt odd.
"The bones are misaligned and have healed incorrectly, now encased by scar tissue. Surgery is required to treat it."
After checking the injured cub, Chen Ying also grabbed the other one, which had come over to watch, and examined it.
"Bold two-legged beast, who gave you permission to touch me?" Little Brain Tiger responded by biting his arm.
Luckily, his thick clothing and resilient leather coat softened the bite, which just mildly hurt before the cub let go willingly.
If it had really bitten down, that arm would have been done for.
Seeing its sibling bite the two-legged beast without a reprimand from mother, the injured cub got angry. With a howl, it pounced on its sibling, and the two tigers instantly tangled into a rolling ball.
The tiger mother’s mouth twitched in annoyance, then she looked away.
Oh well, what you don’t see won’t bother you. These are her own flesh and blood, after all; they can’t bite each other to death.
Chen Ying casually asked how they ended up in the village.
At this, the tiger mother had a lot to say.
"A mad male tiger has come to the forest, always picking fights with winged creatures. I live over there, and that thing has pretty much destroyed all of them. I heard it’s now causing trouble near the humans. Good, I hope the humans take it away and never bring it back!"
All mothers are the same, dreading their children picking up bad habits.
If you have boundless energy to vent, why not hunt Sika Deer? Or even try wild boar meat; why pick on winged things without much meat? After the mischief, it still needs to go hunting—isn’t that just foolish?
"If those two dare to follow its example, this tiger mom is going to deal with them harshly."
A cold light flashed in the mother tiger’s eyes, causing both cubs to shiver in unison. They looked up at their mother and cocked their heads, trying to look cute.
