Chapter 49: I’m Standing Exactly Where I Want To Be.

The light from the hallway nearly blinded him. Using his right arm to shield his eyes, Lucian groaned, staggering back as his back hit the wall while trying to maintain his posture. The only reason he was still active even after the surgery was the effect of the ketamine.

But under the harsh lighting of the hallway, even the anesthesia was unable to save him from the piercing headache he was feeling.

Still, he needed to make it to–

"Lucian?"

Suddenly, a pair of slender, cool hands held him. But for a man of Lucian’s size, she couldn’t keep him upright and they both collapsed to the floor together.

However, Lucian was still flinching like a vampire and the slender fingers immediately reached out and cupped his eyes, shielding him.

"Why did you even come out in your condition? You’re a fool, Lucian. A stubborn, concussed fool."

Under the sanctuary of her hands, Lucian’s breathing began to slow. "You’re late. Ten minutes... were up. I told you... I’d come find you."

...

"Can you stop holding my arm like that?" Brianna sighed, shaking off Lucian’s hand locking on hers, but to no avail.

Rochelle walked behind them, studying the back of Lucian’s head, while being mindful not to get noticed.

"I am the one with the head injury... yet you’re the one acting confused. You’re my wife. This is where your hand belongs."

To emphasize his point, he tightened his grip around her arm. Brianna could only sigh, struggling to walk with an injured ankle and Lucian’s childishness, she pushed the door of the villa open.

Only to be met with the villa upside down!

"Can you take that to the back? We need more than enough space for the guests that’ll be present." Senior Mrs Colburn’s assistant, Candice Ye pointed for the movers before returning to her clipboard.

"Mrs Ye, where should the cat go?"

"Let. Go. Of. Me!" Lucifur struggled under the capture of one of the event crew.

Candice looked at the cat hissing and throwing tantrums before waving a dismissive hand, "Just throw it outside. Senior Mrs Colburn doesn’t like pets around her."

Just as the event crew member turned, he almost bumped into Brianna. She had a brow perfectly cocked and she looked at Lucifur, the man, and then Secretary Ye behind him.

Lucifur meowed furiously, his charcoal fur standing on end as he thrashed in the crew member’s grip. "Lady Brianna?! Did you cause this? Did you plan this? Is this your way of revenge? You’re letting these plebeians touch me! This is a violation of the treaty!"

Brianna’s gaze shifted from Lucifur’s tantrums to the event crew member, "What is the meaning of this?"

"Lady Brianna! Are you deaf? I said they tried to extradite me! I demand a trial! I demand heads on pikes!"

"Drop the cat."

"What? Excuse me, lady, but who are you to tell me what to do?"

"Mrs. Colburn!" Candice Ye glared at the crew member, pulling him back.

"Secretary Ye, what is going on in my house? I don’t recall giving the Matriarch permission to reorganize my home while I was at the hospital."

Candice Ye’s eyes glanced briefly at Lucian, who was currently leaning heavily on Brianna, hiding his face under the baseball cap and void glasses.

"M-mrs. Colburn!" Candice stammered, bowing slightly. "The Senior was... concerned. She wanted to ensure the celebration for the President’s recovery was... appropriate."

Brianna rolled her eyes. Senior Mrs Colburn’s call had led to talking about a party Genevieve was throwing, but she hadn’t spoken about already having people to fix her house.

She didn’t need any of this. Especially since she only wants to sleep.

"Celebration...?" Lucian’s voice came out hoarse.

Brianna turned to Rochelle trying to remain invisible, "Can you please take him to his room?"

Rochelle’s eyes widened as she pointed a finger at herself, then looking at Lucian with raw terror. Mrs. Colburn was making her... she swallowed.

Sensing her hesitation, "He’s not an animal, Rochelle. Just take him to the room."

Rochelle’s trembling hand hovered in the air. She looked like she was trying to touch a live wire.

Lucian stared at the hand, then back at Brianna. "I’m not going anywhere."

"Lucian, just–Look, it’s for your own good–"

Leaning closer, "Do not use your ’Doctor’ voice on me, wife. If I am to be confined to a room, you will be the one locking the door. No one else."

Rochelle sighed in relief. "Mrs. Colburn, maybe I should just be on my way."

When Brianna nodded, giving her a go ahead, she handed over Brianna’s bag to Annie before making her way out. Happy President Lucian did what he did.

"Secretary Ye, I’m going to the kitchen to get water, by the time I’m done, I need everyone out. Is that understood?"

Seeing the secretary nodding, Brianna went to the kitchen. She poured herself a glass of water; mindlessly drinking it down. When she dropped the glass, she closed her eyes, letting out a long shaky breath.

Finally, peace.

Then, a soft, moving texture rubbed against her chin.

Dab. Dab.

Brianna snapped her eyes open. Through the reflection in the dark kitchen window, she saw him. He had ditched the baseball cap somewhere in the villa. The white bandage around his head looked like a crown, and his brown unfocused eyes intensely remained on her.

"Ugh," Brianna groaned, her head thumping back against the cabinet.

"You seem excited to see me, wife."

Lucian’s voice was low and hoarse. He didn’t pull the napkin away. Instead, he let his thumb caress the edge of her lower lip as he memorized the shape of her mouth.

Brianna pushed his hand off. "I told you to go to the room, Lucian. You can barely stand."

"I am standing," he countered, dropping his voice an octave as he leaned into her personal space, forcing her to lean back against the counter.

The scent of his masculine heat trapped her. "I’m standing exactly where I want to be."
