Full-Time Public Enemy-Chapter 716 - 510 Unofficial Visit
As soon as Xiaoga Yexiong entered the Bureau of Mystic Security building today, he could sense that the atmosphere was somewhat amiss. Along the way, everyone seemed distracted. This included the office staff in their offices, the action team members arranging weapons in the standby area, and the special agents hurrying out.
It was as if, in addition to the tasks at hand, there was something else they were all extra concerned about.
He slightly turned his head when White Princess had already swiftly appeared next to him like a fleeting shadow, "Young master, Chen Gu is being promoted today."
Xiaoga Yexiong just grunted softly, then headed for the private elevator on his floor—White Princess moved like a passing shadow again, pressing and holding the elevator door for the young master in advance, "Please, young master!"
But before Xiaoga Yexiong could step in, a few employees came hurrying over and tried to rush into the elevator.
White Princess was furious and scolded with a frown, "How dare you! This is a private elevator!"
A few people snorted as they walked out, looking for another elevator, but noticeably in a state of discontent, someone deliberately threw a taunting remark, "Why so arrogant? Even the private floor's elevator is thanks to Captain Chen setting it up; that's his achievement. You're just basking in borrowed light."
A cross vein popped on Xiaoga Yexiong's forehead, but those employees were just ordinary office staff, their status far below his, and it was beneath him to argue with these people.
Holding back his anger and entering the elevator, Xiaoga Yexiong kept a cold face, bitterly thinking: When he fails, all of you will surely be sorely disappointed.
Ordinary agents being promoted wouldn't garner such attention, but Chen Gu was different. In just three years, he had stepped up to the threshold of the Sixth Energy Level.
Everyone at the Bureau of Mystic Security felt honored by association, so when the news broke that he was to be promoted today, everybody was very concerned.
After reaching his office, Xiaoga Yexiong ordered, "Red Princess, prepare some clear rice wine."
The eyes of Red Princess lit up, "Young master, is there something we need to celebrate?"
"There will be soon." Xiaoga Yexiong didn't elaborate; the wine was obviously intended for drinking when the news of Chen Gu's failed promotion would arrive.
"Yes!"
At the same time, in a mysterious underground space, the lights of the generator began to illuminate. Dr. Meng Ji had come over specifically to preside over the ceremony, as well as to collect data on Chen Gu, the pioneer of multiple professions.
The generator grew brighter and soon was a blinding white, so intense that the onlookers couldn't see anything clearly in front of them.
This process was familiar to everyone; after a while, the light would gradually fade, possibly attracting an invasion from the Endless Realm—that was the most dangerous moment, as failing to endure it could lead to mutation!
However, today the light from the generator suddenly weakened rapidly. The intense white light, which should've lasted, persisted for less than three seconds before it quickly faded away.
Dr. Meng Ji's face changed dramatically; various data on the monitoring instruments were plummeting. Chen Gu, inside the generator, had not reached the promotion values, and the power of the generator had dropped sharply.
Based on his experience, Dr. Meng Ji surmised that at this point, a vast amount of supermatter and mysterious materials should have just begun to melt and decompose, and had not yet fully integrated into Chen Gu's body!
This is terrible!
The promotion process was equivalent to being abruptly interrupted. Not to mention that these precious resources were likely all wasted, but the harm to Chen Gu himself was also extremely dire, and it could even lead to... direct mutation.
Dr. Meng Ji cursed through gritted teeth, then realized his duty: He must assess the level of mental contamination in Chen Gu and the risk of mutation!
His orders were quickly relayed, and soon his students were busy at work, with all kinds of inspection data being collected.
Outside the generator, Gong Shuxu and several others were stunned, "Doctor, what happened?"
Dr. Meng Ji replied anxiously, "Quiet! Let me finish the most important task first, then we'll look for the cause."
Finally, BEEP. Dr. Meng Ji gathered all the data and breathed a sigh of relief, "At least for now, there's no danger of mutation!"
He collapsed back into his chair, his forehead covered in sweat. The tension was just too much. He was worried about Chen Gu and also himself. If a Sixth Energy Level promotion failed and led to mutation, everybody here would be buried with it.
Then the doctor sprang up angrily, "What on earth happened! It's not due to Chen Gu himself; find out the reason, we must clarify it!"
Gong Shuxu's face was grim as he moved aside to call Aviloya, "Director-General, bad news. Chen Gu's promotion has failed!"
Aviloya received the bad news with a calm expression, but her eyes were filled with disappointment. She was silent for a full three seconds before telling Gong Shuxu, "Prepare a detailed investigative report on the procedure and outcome for me."
Then, without waiting for Gong Shuxu to say anything more, she hung up the phone. She sat motionless for several minutes before rising and walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling windows of her office, staring out blankly.
Perhaps... this is the normal outcome.
That young thief had an unobstructed path, but that itself is abnormal. What professional doesn't face failure?
Promotion isn't supposed to be easy. Even I failed several times back then.
I hope this doesn't leave too serious contamination, that it doesn't affect his career prospects.
But he's a multiprofessional. There's no precedent to guide him, what the future holds... is hard to say.
