Chapter 779: 765 Duke’s Ambition

The swarm of insectoids huddled together, neatly aligned as if in deep slumber, with those terrifying creatures stretching from where the eye could see all the way to the horizon. Obviously, these insectoids came in several varieties:

The larval insectoids, only the size of a human child, had not yet developed strong offensive capabilities, but were already more dreadful than humans. They had voracious appetites, craving DNA and organic matter, and some even had small wings on their backs, allowing them to fly at low altitudes. Some of the larvae with exceptional talents could even emit high-pressure air, light beams, or poison for ranged attacks.

The mature insectoids, somewhat taller and more robust than humans, had regular torsos and limbs; some had degenerated wings while others had evolved more developed wings. Their physical strength was formidable, nearly unmatched by any other sapient being of the same size in the known galaxy. They could run at a speed of hundreds of kilometers per hour, and some could even fly several times the speed of sound. Naturally, their means of attack had diversified, allowing them to single-handedly combat certain spacecraft and survive being hit by small-caliber gunfire.

Then there were the fully matured ones, measuring over twenty meters, some even larger, with huge wings capable of warp speed flight—just like the large flying insectoids Bai Zhongqi had seen on Laipeli Star. Insectoids that evolved to this stage were essentially at the pinnacle of what the lower ones could achieve. These were the backbone of the swarm’s combat forces; though not as large as warships, these insectoids’ offensive prowess was comparable to some of the light escort ships of high-level civilizations. Furthermore, under the leadership of the Dukes, groups of fully matured insectoids could amalgamate to form combined fleets, unleashing firepower on par with that of certain cruisers and main battle ships.

Among the sea of insects, there were also some uniquely evolved individuals who looked completely different from the common insectoids. They often appeared strange and idiosyncratic, equipped with abilities not found in regular insectoids. However, these individuals did not form a community, so they seemed isolated.

The sky above the insect sea was a murky grey, seeming not like a genuine sky. This mysterious and strange space was filled with various resting insectoids.

Standing on a cliff like a commander’s platform, Duke Lindong overlooked the boundless sea of insects, his ambition immense.

“Our strength continues to grow, with every planet we devour cleanly, we can add millions of fully matured comrades along with hundreds of millions of matured ones. All these comrades will be useful in our war against the people of Iridium Star.”

Not far behind him, an insectoid whose exoskeleton was wrinkled and even bore a human-like beard beneath its mouthparts, leaning on a cane, said, “But our Empress is not so cooperative at the moment.”

Lindong’s face clearly showed irritation and discontent upon hearing the Duke named Green Elder mention the Empress.

“It doesn’t matter. Since Her Majesty the Empress was beguiled by that human, she can no longer properly take up the responsibility of leading our Swarm forward. That’s why we collectively decided to confine her in Duke Youyuan’s subspace prison, allowing us to direct the war against the people of Iridium Star.”

Green Elder sighed, “But after all, she is the true Empress, the real heart of our insect race. Without her producing eggs, there will be no new insectoids born. Now, although restrained, she is still cooperating with us, producing new eggs. But if one day, she decides not to cooperate, what then?”

Lindong’s mood grew even more irritable, and he cursed, “It’s all that human’s fault.”

Green Elder shook his head, “That human is the most mysterious and powerful Divine General in the galaxy. Even several of us Dukes together couldn’t stop him from leaving. The Empress too fell under his spell, languishing in Youyuan’s space, yearning for him day after day.”

“This is truly our insect race’s disgrace, and there’s also that defector king who joined the Iridium Star Chancellor, utterly revolting.”

Green Elder curiously added, “The Empress of that defector Swarm was infatuated with the Iridium Star Chancellor, while our Empress is smitten with the Divine General. They even changed into human forms for their lovers, a truly baffling affair. This must be a first in the history of our Swarm.”

Jealousy lurked in Lindong’s heart as he said, “It’s also the first time in history that insectoids have developed self-awareness, and, resisting the Empress, have confined her.”

At this point, Green Elder’s spirits visibly lifted, “After the great cosmic explosion, there have been many cataclysmic insect infestations, but the Swarm has ultimately been a disaster and unable to continue as a permanent civilization. However, for the first time, we insectoids have acquired the abilities and memories of Star Warrior hosts through parasitism, becoming self-aware individuals, not wholly subservient in the presence of the Empress. It’s not just us eight Dukes; we now have tens of thousands of self-aware individuals. The Swarm is very close to becoming a civilization.”

Lindong snorted coldly, “I do not care about forging the Swarm into a civilization as you do, Green Elder. I only care about destruction and domination of the galaxy. In the genes of us insectoids, brutality and destruction are everything. And I cannot stand the sight of our enemies breathing in our presence. Therefore, I will lead the Swarm to crush the United Empire of Iridium Star. I shall feast on the flesh and blood of the Iridium Star Chancellor as my most delectable dinner.”

Green Elder cautioned, “Duke Lindong, the Iridium Star Chancellor is no ordinary person. We cannot deduce his origins, and our Swarm’s knowledge is ultimately limited, but judging by the power and abilities he possesses, we are still unable to directly contend with him.”

“That’s why we’ve adopted the approach we’re using now. The strength of Iridium Star lies in their technological level, their enormous industrial manufacturing capabilities, and the support from those revolting rebel Swarms. But if we destroy their civilized planets one by one, continuously growing stronger ourselves, eventually, we will lead a vast army of trillions and utterly erase them from the galaxy.” Lindong was overwhelmed with enthusiasm, as if possessed by boundless energy.

Green Elder did not detract from Lindong’s flourishing ambitions. Instead, he harbored doubts, “Will things really be that simple? This Iridium Star Chancellor possesses various mysterious means, time and again causing our Swarm to suffer losses. His troops, which appear to be female warriors, inspire so much fear in our insectoids. Even if we destroy all of their planets, can we truly defeat the Iridium Star Chancellor?”
