Chapter 9 - Chains of the Rift

The slums, once merely a place of survival and struggle, now squirmed under an unnatural force. The air reeked of burnt metal and ozone. Every alley seemed to ripple, as if the ground itself was alive. Rai Ichiro stood at the edge of a collapsed building, holding Yuki tightly against his chest. Her small form trembled as the shadows around them stretched and hissed like serpents. The corrupted awaken-stone energy leaking from the rift shimmered faintly in the night, spreading like tendrils across the walls, puddles, and piles of garbage.

“Rai... it’s coming closer,” Yuki whispered, her voice barely audible. Her small hand pressed firmly against his chest revealed her fear. Her eyes were not just wide—they glowed faintly green, reflecting the same eerie hue of the rift’s corruption. The child had a sensitivity, a connection that even Rai couldn’t fully grasp, and it chilled him.

The system chimed, its mechanical voice cutting through the chaos in his mind.

[Rift Chain Quest - Stage 2 Initiated]

[Objective: Stabilize the rift by closing corrupted nodes in the slums.]

[Secondary Objective: Protect Yuki.]

[Danger Level: A | Expected Monster Strength: Lv. 10+.]

Rai’s hands tightened around the straps of the bag he carried, where bits of scrap and absorbed trash glimmered faintly, charged with his system energy. He had leveled quickly—much faster than anyone in the slums could expect—but each advancement only deepened the weight of responsibility on him. The rift wasn’t just another quest. It was an active threat, endangering everything and everyone around him.

Crow stepped beside him, the massive pipe in his hands quivering slightly as he scanned the corrupted alley. “You sure you know what you’re doing, boy?” His voice had lost some bravado; fear crept in, subtle but clear.

Rai didn’t respond right away. He scanned the shadows, calculating, as if the tendrils of the rift might lash out at any moment. He knew Crow was watching him, analyzing every small movement. Renji was not far behind. His flames flickered weakly, but his eyes burned with suspicion and unspoken challenge. The truce they had formed out of necessity was already fraying, both sides wary of each other and the rift.

“Renji,” Rai finally said, his voice calm but firm, “stay close. We need to work together, at least until this rift is stabilized.”

Renji pressed his lips together. “Don’t think this makes us friends, trash boy. I’m only doing this because I don’t want my precious academy burning down.” His fire flickered, lighting the debris-strewn alley and casting long, jagged shadows.

Yuki clung to Rai as he moved forward. Her senses were clearly tuned to the rift in ways he couldn’t fully understand. She stopped suddenly, pointing to a corner where the corrupted energy coalesced into a thin, writhing node. “There! That one... it’s wrong,” she said. Her voice quivered, but her gaze was locked on the anomaly, unwavering.

Rai approached the node cautiously, feeling the corruption radiating from it like a cold wave. He had faced monsters before, but this was different. The rift’s energy seemed to seep into reality, making the ground unstable and the air thick. He knelt briefly, absorbing nearby trash to stabilize his energy and prepare for what lay ahead.

[Automatic Garbage Absorber - Range Level 3 Active.]

All the debris, broken metal, scraps, and shards of shattered awaken stones swirled into his system, granting him the power to manipulate matter beyond the alley’s physical limits. Rai’s body pulsed with energy, silently promising Yuki that he would protect her no matter the cost.

Suddenly, the corrupted node pulsed violently, sending shards of glowing energy out like blades. Rai barely raised his gauntlet in time, deflecting the shards as they clattered harmlessly against the wall. The system flashed a notification:

[New Skill Unlocked - Rift Cleaver]

[Active: Harness the corrupted energy in a concentrated strike. Cooldown: 60 seconds.]

Rai’s lips curled into a faint, determined smile. His gauntlet glowed slightly, and the iron sword strapped to his back vibrated with resonance. He felt his power balancing on the edge of something uncontrollable. He knew that wasting any time would only allow the rift to grow stronger.

Crow and Renji watched him, both uneasy. Crow muttered, “What... what kind of trash boy fights like that?”

Renji’s smirk disappeared, replaced by a glare that could cut metal. “He’s hiding something... I can feel it. That strength—there’s no way it’s natural.”

Rai didn’t respond. He focused his attention on the corrupted node. Taking a deep breath, he activated his new skill, Rift Cleaver, channeling the absorbed trash energy and the residual corrupted energy from the node into a single, precise strike. The node trembled violently, pulsing with green light, before exploding in a wave of energy that shook the nearby walls. Dust and debris rained down, the air filled with the smell of burnt metal and ozone.

Yuki gasped, clinging more tightly to his arm. “Rai... it worked!”

Rai nodded, wiping sweat from his brow, though he kept his focus. He could sense other nearby nodes, scattered like toxic seeds in the slum. Each one threatened to corrupt the surroundings, attract monsters, and bring danger to Yuki.

The system pulsed insistently, giving him new information and warnings.

[Rift Chain Quest - Stage 2 Update]

[Nodes Remaining: 6]

[Hint: Nodes are unstable; collapsing one may trigger others.]

[Warning: Exposure increases monster spawn likelihood.]

Rai swallowed hard. This was no longer simply a fight against creatures. Each strike had to be calculated. A single mistake could unleash a wave of corrupted energy, putting not just him and Yuki at risk, but the entire slum.

He looked around. Crow’s hands were shaking slightly, his usual confidence stripped away by the bizarre danger. Renji’s fire flickered nervously as he glanced at the remaining nodes. The truce between them held by a thread, but each second made it more fragile.

Yuki pointed again, sensing a faint shimmer beneath a pile of rubble near the alley’s edge. “Rai... it’s moving...”

Rai’s system pulsed urgently. He moved quickly, using the Automatic Garbage Absorber to gather all nearby debris, forming a protective barrier around Yuki. He felt the energy of the node react to his presence, sending a pulse of resistance as if it had a mind of its own.

[Level Up Achieved - Level 17]

[Rewards: +50 STR, +25 AGI, Skill Upgrade: Automatic Garbage Absorber Range Lv. 4 - 1000 meters.]

He exhaled sharply, letting the new strength fill him. The gauntlet on his hand glimmered subtly, and the iron sword resonated with it, ready to cut through the corrupted node with precision. With one swift motion, he struck the node, channeling his system energy and absorbed garbage into the blow. The node screamed in green light before shattering completely, sending a shockwave that scattered fragments throughout the alley.

Crow stumbled back, awed in spite of himself. “What... what kind of power is that?”

Renji’s eyes widened, and he mumbled to himself, “This... this isn’t trash... it’s something else entirely.”

Rai glanced at Yuki. Her glowing eyes now reflected a mix of fear and understanding. He didn’t need words—she sensed the danger, the strange energy, the system, and the rift’s haunting pull. It was more than instinct. She was the key, he realized, and protecting her was no longer optional.

The slums were slowly stabilizing as nodes were destroyed one by one. However, the system pulsed again, issuing a new alert:

[Warning: Rift Instability Increasing.]

[Next Stage - Rift Mastery: Requires Full Weapon Integration.]

Rai’s hands tingled as he touched the gauntlet and sword. He felt the system demanding a fusion, a more powerful weapon capable of channeling not just trash but corrupted energy itself. This was no longer simply a scavenger’s skill—it was a creation of power in the heart of chaos.

The alley fell silent, except for the faint hiss of residual energy. Crow and Renji both stared at Rai, suspicion and awe mixed in their expressions. The temporary truce hung by a thread, yet neither dared make the first move while the rift still pulsed with life.

Rai’s heart raced. He knew this was merely the beginning. The slums had survived tonight, but the rift’s chains were far from broken. Worse, he felt the system subtly pushing him, guiding him toward choices that could either save or doom everyone around him.

He looked at Yuki, whose small hand rested in his. Her eyes met his, and he nodded. He would fight. He would gain power, protect her, and uncover the mystery of the rift. No matter what.

And as the system whispered, pulsed, and watched, Rai Ichiro, Trash Warrior, prepared for the battles to come.
