Chapter 84: Prophecy?

The women around the table had dedicated all their lives to service, leadership, and guardianship of the Holy Church.

And now, every one of them is looking at him. Waiting.

Brandon exhaled slowly and tapped his fingers again on the armrest of the gilded chair.

"I was pulled into this..." he gestured vaguely to the surroundings...

"...without warning. No one asked if I wanted this role. And I get it; you all think I’m some divine vessel."

The women listened silently and none dared to interrupt.

"I’m not saying I’ll walk away but I will try my best to fit into this role..."

His eyes met Eleonore’s, "I’ll listen and learn."

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Then Eleonore slowly inclined her head. "Understood, Lord Herald. We will walk at your pace."

Geneviève, one of the Triarchs spoke "However, Lord Herald... your presence does shift the entire foundation of the Church’s structure. There will be resistance. Not all will accept you."

Brandon leaned back again, "Then they can leave."

Callista glanced at Brandon with an admiring smile. "Your authority is absolute, My Lord. If anyone dares to question it, I will personally see they are corrected or deleted."

Brandon gave her a wry smile "Don’t go around hurting people just because they don’t kneel when I walk by, Callista."

Callista bowed slightly. "Of course, My Lord."

He looked back at the table. "So. What’s the real reason I’m here?"

Eleonore straightened slightly. "This gathering was meant as an official introduction, a ceremonial recognition of your arrival. But since tradition is not your concern..." she folded her hands.

"...we may skip that."

She turned her gaze to Matilda, "Has Lord Herald received the full account of the Prophecy?" freeωebnovēl.c૦m

Brandon raised an eyebrow. "Prophecy?"

Matilda nodded slightly. "We did not want to overwhelm you, Lord Herald. But the full Prophecy is far more... specific. And its consequences reach deep."

Hm? Brandon raised an eyebrow "Go on, tell me what the Prophecy is."

Geneviève reached for a leather-bound tome resting at her side.

She opened it slowly, revealing some old pages that glowed faintly with embedded etheric script.

Her old fingers traced the lines and she began to recite.

"When the world draws breath beneath the twin eclipses... and the veil between the Mortal Realm and the Divine thins, a Herald shall walk among the Children of Rhéanne."

"Neither born of sacred rite nor forged by ancient covenant, the Herald shall rise... a divergence from the ordained. A human with the ether of stars in blood and a soul untethered by doctrine."

Brandon blinked.

What the hell?

Geneviève continued, "Upon the Herald’s awakening, the chains of balance shall loosen. The Three Pillars shall tremble. The Path of Flame shall open and the wings shall burn."

Brandon frowned slightly, "After all these years, are you able to decipher what it meant?"

Hearing this, Geneviève shook her head "No... we don’t have any clues of what this means."

With a sigh, Brandon closed his eyes for a moment ’I am doubting if the Goddess herself is real or not. Should I be concerned with these prophecies?’

’They sound dangerous... because I am this Herald after all.’

’Hmm... Damn it.’

’Well, if I am the damn Herald...’

He glanced at Geneviève "Bring me the full translations of the prophecy, including all historical context and commentary from previous Pontiffs."

"I want everything. The real version. Not the edited one you read to the people."

Geneviève bowed her head "Will be done, Lord Herald. The records will be prepared and sent to your quarters before nightfall, Lord Herald. Unaltered and unfiltered."

With a nod, he replied "Good."

Just as the atmosphere seemed to ease, it was Eleonore who next spoke, "There is... another matter, Lord Herald."

Hm? Brandon glanced at her and she spoke "It is your marriage with Valiene."

Eh? He turned his gaze back to Valiene and spoke "I already heard the details from Matilda."

"And now that I’m already tied to the Church by my presence here, my title, and your recognition... I don’t see the point of continuing with that arrangement."

With a shake of her head, Eleonore spoke "A partner of divine alignment, chosen by the Church, would serve to shield and guide you."

"It is also a way to ensure your bloodline, My Lord."

He looked at Valiene, who just kept her head lowered and frowned slightly "I will not force anyone."

"If Valiene truly desires to marry me... of her own will, not because the Church tells her it’s her duty, then I will consider it."

Callista just smiled brightly and stood up "My Lord."

She walked to him and kneeled beside him on the chair as she gently took his hand before kissing the back of his palm.

"It is not compulsory that you marry Valiene," she said with a dazzling smile.

"If you wish, you may even choose me instead. It would be my greatest pleasure and honor to marry you."

"I can assure you, My Lord. As an Empyrean of the Flame Choir, I am well-versed in both combat and diplomacy. I daresay I can protect you better than anyone in this room."

As she spoke, her gaze flickered to Charlotte, who just frowned slightly at her words.

Hearing this, Valiene pressed her lips together, and the fingers on her lap tensed subtly.

The other Empyrean, Lucienne shook her head helplessly "This woman..."

Callista just smiled and glanced at Lucienne "I’m merely being proactive. If our Lord Herald is to choose a companion, then should he not know all his options?"

-_- Brandon looked at them blankly ’Is this a dating show?’

With a sigh, he raised his hand and gently patted Callista’s head, who was still kneeling beside him "I will think about it."

Callista’s eyes widened slightly at the gesture.

The dignified Empyrean blinked as if trying to decide whether to be flattered or... extremely flattered.

Callista looked up at him with a luminous, delighted smile. "That is all I ask, My Lord."

He gave her a look. "Get up."

She obeyed with perfect elegance, returning to her seat without the slightest trace of embarrassment, and she is even proud of herself.

Eleonore cleared her throat gently, bringing the conversation back to focus. "Let us not turn this into a spectacle."

"Callista’s... suggestion, forward as it is, represents a simple truth. The partner you choose need not be Valiene. It could be another member of the Church."

Brandon nodded his head as his gaze flickered to Callistra ’Marrying an Empyrean...’

At this time, he felt a sudden chill run down his spine and slowly turned to look at Charlotte.

Huh? What is this feeling?

He noticed that her eyes are narrowed slightly. ’Is she thinking something or is she mad?’
