Chapter 743: Chapter 743: Doppelganger frёewebηovel.cѳm

No one.

There was no one outside.

Xu Tian’s legs trembled, and as if having an epiphany, he suddenly relaxed,

"It’s the production team, right? You all were trying to prank me, right? How childish...See, I am not scared!"

Xu Tian laughed nervously, trying to convince himself. But the hallway outside was completely empty.

No lights, no shadows, no crew members hiding with a camera. Just silence.

His hands felt cold. He turned his head slightly to check his room.

Suddenly he felt as if someone was massaging his hair. Xu Tian’s entire body froze.

At first, the touch was gentle, like someone playing with his hair. But then—

The grip tightened.

Xu Tian’s heart pounded. His breath caught in his throat. The fingers in his hair twisted, pulling hard. Pain shot through his scalp.

"Ah—!" He gasped, reaching up to grab the hand.

But there was nothing there.

The pressure didn’t stop. It felt like invisible fingers were tangling through his hair, yanking harder and harder.

Xu Tian stumbled backward, slamming into the doorframe.

His chest rose and fell quickly. He wanted to scream for help, but his voice stuck in his throat.

Then, a voice whispered near his ear.

"You said you weren’t scared, right?"

It was the same voice from before. But now, it sounded amused.

Xu Tian’s eyes widened. He spun around, looking for whoever—or whatever—was speaking. But there was no one. Just the empty hallway.

Then, from inside his room—

Creak.

The sound of his bed shifting.

Something was moving inside.

Xu Tian’s body turned ice cold. He had just left the bed. No one should be in there.

Slowly, he turned his head toward the dark room.

And then he saw it.

A figure sat on his bed.

It was him.

Or at least... something that looked like him.

Xu Tian’s doppelganger sat on the bed, facing away, its posture exactly like his.

The doppelganger rubbed his eyes and looked around, then it stood up and got down. As if possessed, it suddenly started to bend backward.

The doppelgänger’s body bent backward in a way no human should be able to. Bones cracked loudly, like someone twisting a dry branch.

Xu Tian’s stomach turned. His feet felt glued to the floor.

The thing’s head flopped upside down, its face now staring at him—its own face.

Then, it grinned.

Its mouth stretched too wide, too far, like its skin was made of rubber.

Xu Tian’s breathing turned shaky. His legs screamed at him to run, but he was frozen.

The doppelganger took a step forward. Then another. Its steps were weird—jerky, like a puppet on tangled strings.

"Why are you scared?" It whispered. Its voice was his, but wrong. Like something was imitating him but didn’t quite get it right.

Xu Tian’s heart pounded against his chest.

The thing’s grin widened.

"Let’s switch places."

Xu Tian snapped out of his trance. "Nope!" he yelped, spinning around and sprinting down the hallway.

His feet slammed against the wooden floor. He didn’t care where he was going—he just needed to get away.

Behind him, he heard a sickening sound—like wet cloth slapping against the ground.

The thing was crawling after him.

Fast.

Xu Tian ran faster.

The hallway seemed longer than before, stretching endlessly. No matter how far he ran, the doors didn’t end.

Then—

Tap. Tap. Tap.

The knocking again.

But this time, it was coming from inside the walls.

Xu Tian’s head spun. He clutched his ears. "No! Stop!"

The whispers started.

"Let’s switch."

"Let’s switch."

"Let’s switch."

His vision blurred. His body felt heavy. His legs wobble.

Xu Tian was so immersed in running away that he didn’t watch his steps and tripped.

Plop.

The moment he fell down, he only had one thought in his mind,

’I am done for.’

And sure enough, he felt a chuckle near his ear. As he looked up, he saw his doppelganger grinning at him,

"Time’s up."

’No! No! I don’t want to die.’ Xu Tian thought.

The doppelganger opened his mouth, and Xu Tian felt darkness envelop him.

Just then, a voice sounded,

"Bad ghost. Attacking at night, don’t you feel you owe me an apology?"

With a blinding golden light, a figure appeared.

Xu Tian barely saw anything because of the golden light, but he felt the heavy pressure on his chest disappear.

The doppelgänger shrieked. It sounded like a thousand voices screaming at once.

When Xu Tian’s vision cleared, he saw someone standing between him and the monster.

It was Yu Holea.

Xu Tian blinked.

The doppelgänger screeched. Its rubbery face twisted in anger. It lunged at Yu Holea with long, clawed fingers.

Yu Holea didn’t even flinch. She flicked her wrist.

Whoosh!

The talisman flew straight at the doppelgänger’s forehead and stuck there.

The creature froze.

Then—

BOOM!

A burst of golden flames exploded from its body. The doppelgänger howled, twisting and writhing as its skin started to burn away.

"No! No! Let’s switch! Let’s—!"

Before it could finish, it crumbled into black ash.

Silence filled the hallway.

Xu Tian lay on the floor, gasping. His whole body was shaking. He slowly looked up at Yu Holea.

She sighed, dusting off her hands. "Seriously," she muttered. "I just wanted to get some sleep."

Xu Tian’s mouth opened and then closed.

He had a million questions.

But the only thing that came out was—

"...What?"

Yu Holea turned to him, smiling like she hadn’t just burned a ghost monster into dust.

"Don’t worry about it," she said. "Just bad luck."

Xu Tian stared at her.

Bad luck?! BAD LUCK?!

This wasn’t just bad luck!

But before he could argue, Yu Holea yawned. "Let’s go back to sleep," she said, stretching. "I’m tired."

However, Xu Tian didn’t let her go, instead, he followed her and said,

"You...you...where did you get the talismans?"

"I made it." Yu Holea replied, then after considering Xu Tian’s condition, she said, "I am a ghost exorcist."

Xu Tian’s heart skipped a beat.

After seeing Yu Holea defeat the ghost, he only had one thought in his mind.

"She is so cool! I should stick with her!"

Hence, even though he felt ashamed, he followed her,

"I...Can I sleep with you?"

Yu Holea: "..."

As if realizing how inappropriate his words were, he said,

"Sorry...I meant... Can I stay in your room?!"

Xu Tian’s face turned red. He wanted to dig a hole and hide inside.

Yu Holea blinked at him. Then, she laughed.

"Scared?" she teased.

Xu Tian swallowed his pride. "YES!" he said without hesitation. "Super scared! I almost died just now! My room is haunted! What if that thing comes back?!"

Yu Holea smirked. "Ghosts don’t attack twice in one night."

Xu Tian frowned. "How do you know?"

"Because I said so." She shrugged.

Xu Tian stared at her. That wasn’t a real answer!

But before he could argue, Yu Holea sighed. "I can’t...my fiance won’t like it."

Hearing that Yu Holea had a fiance, Xu Tian felt a twinge of regret.

Honestly, he developed a liking for Yu Holea.

She was beautiful...more beautiful than any of the female co-stars he ever had. She knows how to cook, she even knows medicine and is even well-versed in ghost exorcising...

She was wife material.

He was tempted to snatch her away, but he had heard about her fiance.

Qiao Jun. The business tycoon, a self-made billionaire...and handsome too.

Xu Tian sighed. He knew he had no chance. Compared to a billionaire like Qiao Jun, he was just a struggling actor.

"Ah... never mind then," he mumbled, looking away.

Yu Holea raised an eyebrow. "Huh? Why do you sound so disappointed?"

Xu Tian coughed. "Nothing! Just tired! Yeah, super tired!"

Yu Holea smirked like she saw right through him but didn’t say anything.

"Alright, go back to your room. You’ll be fine," she said, waving him off.

Xu Tian gulped. "But what if—"

Yu Holea suddenly reached into her pocket and pulled out a small talisman. She flicked it at his forehead.

Smack!

"Ow!" Xu Tian rubbed his forehead. "What was that for?!"

Yu Holea grinned. "That’s a protection charm. As long as you have it, no ghosts will bother you tonight."

Xu Tian held the talisman, staring at it like it was his lifeline. "For real?"

"Of course. Now go sleep," Yu Holea said, yawning.

Xu Tian hesitated. He really, REALLY didn’t want to go back to his room...

"Okay... but if I die, I’m haunting you forever," he muttered, walking back to his room.

Yu Holea laughed. "Deal."

Back in his room, Xu Tian locked the door, closed the windows, and checked under the bed just in case.

Then, he clutched the talisman and curled up in his blanket.

He stared at the ceiling, afraid to close his eyes.

Minutes passed.

Then hours. Nothing happened.

No whispers. No shadows. No creepy doppelgängers.

Slowly, his eyelids grew heavy.

"I guess it really works," he murmured.
