Chapter 358: Chapter 358: Past Memories

Lana, who had been resting with her eyes closed, sensed a shadow fall across her face.

She opened her eyes.

When she saw Jenny standing there, a faint smile appeared on her lips.

"What is it, Jenny?"

Jenny clenched her hands nervously.

Her voice trembled slightly.

"You... you don’t have to worry about me."

She forced a weak smile.

"The reason I look like this is because I want to lose weight."

Her eyes lowered. "I want to enter the entertainment industry."

The moment those words were spoken, Lana’s eyes narrowed slightly.

She looked at Jenny quietly for a moment before speaking in a strangely calm tone.

"Is that really what you want to say?"

Her gaze sharpened. "Or were you forced to say it?"

Jenny’s heart skipped a beat.

Without thinking, she glanced toward Daniel.

Daniel’s expression had already turned cold and threatening. His entire aura felt suffocating.

Jenny’s eyes widened in fear.

"I... It was my own decision!"

Her voice became hurried and shaky. "I wanted to do it myself!"

Lana stared at her silently.

Then she slowly shook her head. "I see."

She leaned back into the couch again.

"In that case, there’s no need to search this place."

Her tone suddenly became casual again.

"Maybe she really is just malnourished."

Then she turned toward Monica and chuckled lightly.

"Instead of continuing this little drama, why don’t we just find some rooms and rest?"

Her words sounded almost playful.

Monica instantly understood that Lana was deliberately trying to make the whole situation appear like a joke.

However, she couldn’t help feeling puzzled.

’Why did she suddenly change her decision?’

Mr. Crow was equally confused.

Through their communication link, he asked quietly, "What are you doing?"

But Lana remained silent. She didn’t respond at all.

Instead, she simply looked toward Daniel, whose gaze was fixed directly on her as if trying to see through her thoughts.

Lana merely smiled back.

"Well?" she spoke casually. "Aren’t you going to prepare some rooms for us?"

Her smile widened slightly. "Or are you going back on your word now?"

Daniel stared at her for a few seconds before shaking his head stiffly. "No."

His voice sounded tight. "I will prepare the rooms."

He turned toward one of the servants and gave a brief order.

Soon, several rooms were arranged for the guests.

After everyone went inside their respective rooms, Mr. Crow immediately spoke through the link again.

"What happened?"

His voice carried confusion. "Why did you back out at the last moment?"

Lana narrowed her eyes slightly. "Jenny is being blackmailed."

Mr. Crow froze. "And the kind of blackmail she’s facing involves a life."

Her tone turned serious.

"As long as we directly act against Daniel, whoever, or whatever, Jenny is being threatened with will be placed in danger."

She paused briefly.

"It could be someone’s life... or something that could permanently destroy Jenny’s reputation."

Mr. Crow looked slightly surprised. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

"How did you figure that out?"

Lana chuckled softly.

"It wasn’t that complicated."

She leaned back against the wall and closed her eyes halfway. "Just a little psychology."

Her voice grew quieter. "When Jenny was apologizing earlier, she looked terrified ..."

Lana opened her eyes slightly.

"As if she believed something terrible would happen if she didn’t follow Daniel’s instructions."

Lana fell silent for a moment after finishing her deduction.

Then she spoke again, her voice low and steady.

"From what I understand... Jenny definitely has no good feeling toward Daniel."

Her eyes darkened slightly as she continued.

"Was she afraid of Daniel? I don’t think so..."

Her fingers tapped lightly against the armrest of the chair.

"So the thing Jenny is afraid of right now is most likely the evidence being used to blackmail her. If that evidence is destroyed or exposed... whatever she is protecting might be placed in danger."

Mr. Crow listened carefully before nodding slowly.

"So what should we do next?"

Lana leaned back slightly.

"Before we find out what the blackmail material actually is, we can’t act rashly."

Mr. Crow frowned.

"But we don’t have much time."

Lana suddenly chuckled softly.

"That’s exactly why..."

Her eyes glimmered faintly in the darkness.

"We’re going on a secret mission tonight."

Mr. Crow sighed helplessly.

"Since when did you start interfering in other people’s matters?"

The moment he said that, Lana suddenly went quiet.

Her gaze slowly drifted toward the window where the moonlight spilled across the floor.

Memories she had long buried began resurfacing.

She was reminded of her previous life.

The time when she had been kicked out of the Almond family. The time when she was used by her so-called friend, cousin, and biological family.

The time when she had struggled desperately just to survive.

Back then, rage and grief had consumed her heart.

She had nowhere to go.

So she joined a mercenary group.

At that time, most of the mercenaries were already soul cultivators.

Compared to them, Lana was nothing but a weak girl with barely any physical strength.

Her only strengths were her quick thinking and the weapon designs she occasionally created.

Other than that... she was practically useless in direct combat.

Many people in the group looked down on her. Some openly mocked her.

Others bullied her whenever they had the chance. Lana had endured everything silently.

But there was one woman in the group who never joined the bullying.

Jenny. Jenny never stopped them either.

She simply watched everything with an indifferent gaze.

As if none of it concerned her.

One day, however, things became far worse.

Lana had been beaten so badly that she began coughing up blood.

Her vision had blurred, and her body had felt cold as if death itself was creeping closer.

She had been on the verge of collapsing completely.

That was the only time Jenny stepped forward.

Without saying a word, Jenny carried Lana away and personally applied medicine to her wounds.

When Lana finally recovered enough to sit up, gratitude filled her chest.

She looked at Jenny with sincere appreciation.
