Chapter 18: D8. Don Quixote_2

After leaving the city gates, it was another half-day's long journey.

The little boots, which had only been used within the city area, now looked weather-beaten after several days of intense use.

When the Hero noticed that the soil beneath her feet started to turn dark, she knew she had finally arrived at her destination.

Although raised in the city, the Hero had spent some time in the countryside as a child, and she had heard that in some areas, black soil represented fertile land.

However, the black soil at this battle site was clearly not the case.

[Arcane War occurred decades ago]

The land, polluted by the Arcane Surge half a century ago, remains barren to this day.

It was said that the immense Arcane Surge had swept across the entire Kingdom, turning the world dark, with only a tributary reaching near this city.

Nevertheless, regardless of how fierce the war was back then, and how much blood was shed, one could tell who the eventual victor was by looking at the thriving city today.

[Hero's Detection (Perception+12)]

Cautiously entering the edge of the battlefield, avoiding ghosts and lingering skeletons, as well as an inexplicably large number of Slimes, the Hero finally spotted Goblins active in the remnants of the battle site.

[Hero has found ──]

1. Big Goblin (50 subordinates)♛

2. Windmill Knight (66 subordinates)

Battle site remains were filled with wartime fortifications built back then, and the shelters constructed with Earth Magic were still functional.

The Hero peeked out from behind a shelter, looking towards an open space not far away.

There, dozens of Goblins were gathering around a Big Goblin, as tall as an adult male with hefty arms, doing something uncertain.

The number of Goblins wasn't particularly large, but neither was it small.

Fifty or so little green devils clustered together, including one standout Big Goblin, created a disgusting sight that made one frown.

Comparing the strength of the enemy and herself, the Hero fell into deep thought.

Even though the number of Goblins was manageable, the danger in the area seemed disproportionate to their quantity.

The more concentrated the Magic Elements, the more dangerous the location, and naturally, the more Magic Creatures would proliferate.

Even desolate places like abandoned mines had many Goblins, and even if there were other Magic Creatures at the battle site ruins, the number of Goblins here should have been greater.

Thus, the Hero turned around and stealthily left, beginning another round of search. (Success assumed)

Sure enough ──

Not long after leaving the spot, the Hero followed the foul smell in the air and found another group of Goblins.

The Hero swallowed hard as she eyed the even larger group of Goblins.

And their leader was even stranger... clad in rusty iron scraps and a helmet, was that thing even a Goblin?

The Hero hid in the distance, puzzled as she watched this oddly dressed Goblin mimicking something, imperiously scolding its subordinates.

[Hero's Identification (lower than Goblin knowledge(41) is successful)]

Though the helmet obscured its face, the dismal green skin still revealed its identity.

The Hero recalled the information, matching up the appearance with materials she had read in the library.

"A Goblin Knight? Truly ridiculous," she scoffed.

But that rusty iron was not easy to deal with.

Eyeing the Armor, the Hero bit her lower lip.

The area of the Ruins of the Arcane War isn't very extensive; perhaps this number of Goblins was about all it could accommodate?

Hiding in the shadows, the Hero was busy calculating how many Goblins she had discovered when she suddenly noticed some movement among the distant group of Goblins.

"Hmm...?"

The Hero peered out and saw that the Windmill Knight's pretentious scolding of the subordinates had ended.

A mess of Goblins dispersed disorderly, seemingly exhausted by their lack of discipline; the Windmill Knight shook his head repeatedly, then sat down, and lay down on the ground, his armor clanking loudly before he remained motionless.

To the other Goblins, this bizarre behavior of the Goblin Windmill Knight was nothing unusual.

They only followed this strange Goblin out of an instinct to follow the strong, otherwise, they might as well join that slightly more Goblin-like big devil next door.

Meanwhile, the distant Hero noticed the rhythm of the breaths beneath the Goblin Knight's Armor, slowly becoming steady.

It actually lay down on the ground and fell asleep.

"Can sleep in that iron suit?" The Hero couldn't help but gape.

But soon, her eyes widened.

This was a golden opportunity!

[Hero's next move ──]
