Chapter 151: The Enemy Base

"What in the world am I seeing?" Kai was stunned at the sight of this A.I. Base...

It was nothing like what he had imagined. There were no high walls or heavy fortifications. Instead, farms stretched around the compound, and humans were the ones tending them.

Their bodies were thin, their faces looked so hollow, and their movements were sluggish from exhaustion.

Kai was unable to comprehend this situation.

"Why would the A.I. use humans for labor? Machines are more efficient... The A.I. should know that better... This doesn’t make sense. Is this some kind of punishment?"

Kai suddenly remembered.

The mechanized army had used humans as meatshields before. Althea and Sera were the living proof of that since they had once been dragged into battle as expendable bodies.

Kai had also seen it with his own eyes. This was no different. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

The A.I. didn’t care about efficiency. Maybe it cared about control, about breaking humanity piece by piece.

Kai’s grip tightened on his hatchet.

He knew what had to be done. This wasn’t just for the experience points and not just for the Leaderboard... but to free those people, and to strike back at the machines that thought they could enslave humanity.

He turned to Atom... "We’re attacking this place..."

Down in the fields, one of the slaves wiped sweat from his brow.

His name was Noli.

Over the past three years, every morning began the same.

The barracks doors clanged open, chains rattled, and the humans were driven out into the fields.

The Sentinels marched beside them, and they never spoke.

However, many loudspeakers mounted on the fences and walls of the building gave out announcements for everyone to hear.

"Row Four, begin planting. Row Five, continue watering. Row Six, start harvesting. Any failure to comply will be punished."

Noli then moved forward with the others. At this time, his stomach was already hollow, and his body had become thin from weeks of nutrient paste.

Still, he didn’t want to die!

’I must live...’

Although the gray sludge they were fed at dawn was tasteless, barely enough to keep him upright, he would still eat it to regain his strength.

"Just another day... I can do this..." He reminded himself as he looked at the field.

It seemed as if the fields stretched endlessly.

There were rows of beans, cabbage, and other leaves forced from the soil by starving people...

The atmosphere around them was thick with dust, sweat, and the acrid trace of machine oil. Even drones hovered overhead, recording every movement.

There was simply no way of escaping this place!

If someone slowed, a shock baton cracked against their back.

If someone collapsed, they were dragged away, and Noli never saw them again.

He had learned to keep his head down, to move just fast enough to avoid punishment, but never so fast that he wasted precious strength.

Around him, the world felt like a cage.

There were crude fences marking the perimeter, towers that could be seen ahead with automated turrets, and the sensors of Sentinels that swept across the surroundings to watch them work.

Soon at night, they were locked in cramped quarters, the loudspeakers announcing curfew before shutting off.

Sleep came in fragments as it was broken by hunger, fear, and the rattling of chains.

Noli no longer remembered freedom, but he remembered fear. Fear of punishment, fear of being discarded like the others...

"What’s going on?"

After a few days, rumors had spread among the slaves.

Some of the Sentinels that usually patrolled the perimeter hadn’t returned!

The machines gave no explanation, but the absence was clear.

Noli dared not speak of it aloud, but in his heart, he wondered...

’Could this mean someone out there is fighting back?’

***

A few days ago, when Kai had discovered this place, he didn’t immediately attack... He knew that there was no way for the two of them to win against these A.I. Soldiers.

With that in mind, he began to study the patrol routes. The Sentinels moved in groups of three or four, circling the perimeter like clockwork.

Their sensors swept the fields, scanning for threats, but they never expected a hunter waiting in the shadows.

"Let’s weaken their army... Let’s do this."

With his Keen Sense active, every vibration, every metallic step echoed in his mind.

He could tell the difference between the heavier tread of a C‑Grade unit and the lighter, quicker movements of an E or D-Grade.

"They’re here..." Kai muttered as he hid himself...

The first group came into view.

There were three E‑Grade Sentinels armed with rifles.

"Atom... Let’s be silent on this. Quick Kill... Ok?" Kai said as he reminded Atom.

Then, Kai tightened his grip on the hatchet. He had fought stronger enemies before, but he felt a little nervous still.

But a huge Tyrant had once tested every ounce of his strength. Compared to that, these were nothing!

"Here we go..." Kai muttered as he triggered Specter Step!

He moved really fast thanks to this Ability.

"Haa!"

Soon, one quick dash, and the hatchet cleaved through the nearest Sentinel’s neck joint.

Thud!

Sparks erupted as its body collapsed.

Before the others could react, Kai’s blade spun in his hand, striking the second across its ’eyes’ or sensors.

The third Sentinel then raised its weapon, but Atom’s shot rang out, piercing its core.

[ Enemy Unit Destroyed: Sentinel (E) ]

[ +200 Experience Points ]

Three down!

Kai dragged the wreckage into the brush, as he needed to hide the evidence. He knew the machines would notice eventually, but every delay bought him time.

The next patrol was tougher... He found four D‑Grade Sentinels...

"Still reasonable..." Kai muttered as he slowly recalled the rhythm of his fight against the Tyrants and other fast-moving mechanized soldiers like the Hounds. He had learned then that brute force wasn’t enough and precision mattered!

Kai waited until the patrol passed a narrow alley between two ruined structures outside the base.

When the moment came, he struck. His hatchet smashed into the first Sentinel’s knee joint, knocking it off balance.

Thud!

As the machine fell, Kai vaulted over its body and drove the blade into the second Sentinel’s chest plate. Atom then dashed from cover, hitting the third and keeping it distracted.

The fourth Sentinel charged. But Kai noticed this immediately and turned sharply, dodging the strike, then countered with a clean slash that cut off its weapon arm.

"Ha!"

He finished it with a crushing blow to its core!

Another Sentinel was down!

Night after night, Kai repeated this process, eliminating patrols in small groups and leaving fewer machines to guard the base!
