Global Game: Developing a Knight Clan-Chapter 81 - 80: Breaking Through the Border, Demon Beasts Garrison
"The city defense Barrier! Quick! Activate the Barrier!"
Compared to the Silver Lion Duchy, the Green Vine Duchy was clearly more meticulous with its border defenses.
The plains fortifications’ walls were all well over twenty meters high. Perhaps because it was a flatland region, the Green Vine Duchy had clearly invested heavily in its borders.
Its standing border army numbered over ten thousand. This joint defense force was comprised of troops stationed at the border by the various Lords of the Green Vine Duchy, all under the command of the Duke’s Mansion.
Additionally, barrier arrays were carved all along the extensive city walls.
As the Knights and Mages shouted, a clear light suddenly flared up from the tall towers spaced about a kilometer apart along the wall.
This light washed over the walls, covering them in what looked like a thin, watery film.
It was clearly a Barrier that enhanced the walls’ defensive capabilities.
At this moment, on the three sections of the wall facing the charging Demon Beast Tide, a multitude of soldiers had nervously drawn their bows. Even the rows of massive ballistae were in position, and large barrels of petroleum had been hauled onto the ramparts. They were just waiting for the Demon Beast Tide to enter attack range before launching the first volley.
However, a scene that no one in the Border Army expected unfolded.
Just as the Demon Beast Tide was about to enter the 1,500-meter range of the city’s defenses, the horde, which stretched for several kilometers across the plains, suddenly roared in unison.
No, it wasn’t a roar, but a synchronized command issued by the Entry Tier Demon Beasts.
In response, the charging Demon Beast Tide suddenly accelerated!
And high above, the speed of the numerous Flying Demon Beasts also increased dramatically.
With that, a tremor that seemed to shake the very earth and mountains spread out.
When the Demon Beast Tide finally closed to within four hundred meters of the three wall sections, the massive ballistae atop the defenses sprang into action!
"Ballistae, ready! Mage Corps, ready!"
"Fire the ballistae! Cast your spells!"
Atop the three sections of the wall, a commanding Border Defense Knight Corps Commander suddenly bellowed!
"Archers, prepare for 200 meters! Ready for free fire!"
"Militia, ready the petroleum! Drop it as soon as the Beast Tide reaches the walls!"
"..."
The Knight Legion Commander shouted a continuous stream of orders, his voice amplified by the Barrier’s Power, making it audible across the entire defensive line.
Instantly, the massive ballistae on the walls fired down at the Demon Beast Tide on the ground!
Meanwhile, the three to five Mages on each section of the wall continuously enchanted the ballista bolts.
Their enchantments caused the special bolts fired from the massive ballistae to produce various magical effects, like explosive splashes or even greater sharpness and piercing power.
The regular Archers nervously watched the Beast Tide on the ground, but they didn’t forget to keep an eye on the Flying Demon Beasts in the sky.
Unfortunately, the Flying Demon Beasts were flying too high at the moment. Although they formed a vast, dark mass, they showed no signs of diving down.
"ROAR!"
"AWOOOO!"
"HISSSS~"
The Beast Tide let out all manner of roars and shrieks.
The moment the defensive ballistae fired, the world itself began to change!
A great wind suddenly rose over the plains.
The raging wind whipped up, reaching the force of a powerful gale in an instant.
The wind blew toward the human city walls, accelerating the Demon Beast Tide’s charge with the tailwind. At the same time, most of the soldiers on the walls were staggered and found it difficult to keep their eyes open.
But that was the extent of it. For when the Barrier’s light flared once more, a film-like ripple appeared and covered the area about two meters above the top of the walls.
This magical barrier film formed a convex dome, enveloping the entire top of the city wall.
Immediately, the human soldiers were no longer affected by the raging wind.
"AWOOOO!"
"RAWR!"
The battle had begun. The humans’ ballista bolts plunged into the Demon Beast Tide, and screams and casualties began to appear among the vanguard.
But the four-hundred-meter distance was covered in just a few breaths, and the surging Demon Beast Tide was now less than two hundred meters from the human walls.
And it was at this moment that the flying beasts in the sky finally made their move!
Leading them was none other than the Shadow Wind Giant Eagle.
With the shrieking fury of a Tier Five beast, the Shadow Wind Giant Eagle dove down in an instant, lunging for the glowing Crystal Stone atop a high tower on one of the three wall sections!
These Crystal Stones were the source of the defensive Barrier’s Magic Power!
Low-intelligence Demon Beasts might not notice such details, knowing only to charge the walls mindlessly.
However, with Lince overseeing the entire battlefield, he had immediately spotted the fatal weakness in the city’s defense Barrier.
"It’s a Middle Tier Flying Demon Beast!"
"Quick! Stop it! We can’t let it destroy the Barrier Crystal Stone!"
The instant the Shadow Wind Giant Eagle dove from the heavens, the Mages and some of the Knights on the wall all cried out in alarm.
But at this moment, no one could stop it.
At the same time, the flying beasts high above split into two groups. Their target was crystal clear: dive in formation and destroy the Crystal Stones atop the high towers on all three sections of the wall.
Even more terrifying, and what plunged the humans into despair, was what happened next.
Just as the Demon Beast Tide on the ground closed to within a hundred meters of the wall, a terrifying behemoth suddenly dove down from the clouds.
Its entire body shimmered with a metallic luster as it swooped low, streaking along the front line of the charging Demon Beast Tide.
Its swift figure was like a flash of light. Its claws skimmed the ground like a dragonfly touching water, rapidly scoring the grassy earth just ahead of the Demon Beast Tide’s vanguard.
And then, a tremendous ROAR erupted.
Along the side of the great plains, directly opposite the humans’ twenty-meter-high wall, the earth rumbled and bridges suddenly rose from the ground!
Yes, they were earthen bridges constructed entirely of immense Magic Power, extending straight toward the towering city walls!
In less than two or three breaths, they were completely set in place atop the walls, right before the eyes of all the Demon Beasts and human soldiers!
The earthen bridges were tinged with a metallic sheen.
Thus, in just a few breaths, six terrifying and solid bridges now rested directly upon the three sections of the city’s defensive wall!
In that instant!
All the human soldiers, Knights, and even the Mages were stunned.
Even the Demon Beast Tide was clearly bewildered.
This method of warfare had truly never been seen on any battlefield between Demon Beasts and the Human Race.
But there was no time to hesitate.
Because in the next moment, the roar of the Rock Steel Giant Dragon echoed throughout the heavens and the earth!
"ROAR!"
"ROAR!"
"AWOOOO!"
At the roars of the Lord Level Demon Beasts, the rest of the tide greedily and ferociously surged onto the bridges!
"It’s over!"
"It’s a Dragon Species! The one who started this Demon Beast Tide is actually a Sub-dragon!"
At that moment, as he watched the masses of Demon Beasts crowding onto the six bridges to storm the walls, the Border Defense Knight Corps Commander knew it was all over.
He had already fallen into despair after seeing what the Rock Steel Giant Dragon had done, and after watching the Shadow Wind Giant Eagle shatter one of the Barrier Crystal Stones on the walls.
From beginning to end, Lince, as the Rock Steel Giant Dragon, had not shed a single drop of blood.
The entire battle, from start to finish, lasted less than an hour.
That’s right!
The Green Vine Duchy’s border defenses had been overrun by Demon Beasts!
And they had been taken with extreme ease!
Countless Demon Beasts were now enjoying the fruits of their victory, feeding on the soldiers who had not managed to retreat in time.
Even the large stores of Magic Crystals inside the high towers of the defensive walls became part of their rations.
Throughout it all, the Rock Steel Giant Dragon watched everything with a calm gaze.
However, the moment the battle ended, Lince restrained all the Demon Beasts.
He did not allow the Beast Tide to advance into the Green Vine Duchy’s territory.
He simply had all the Demon Beasts gather on or on either side of the walls.
His mission was only to tie down a portion of the Green Vine Duchy’s forces, not to act as the main assault.
Besides, his current public identity made it inappropriate for him to let the Demon Beasts slaughter a large number of human Commoners.
Therefore, the goal of this expedition was clear: to wait for reinforcements from the Green Vine Duchy to arrive.
But before that, Lince had all the Earth-attribute Demon Beasts get to work.
Their task was to create numerous traps in the areas just inside the border wall.
Using the Shadow Wind Giant Eagle and other Flying Demon Beasts for reconnaissance, Lince planned to ambush any relief forces that came to retake the position.
Although Lince had already captured this "point."
But the human reinforcements would certainly come!
Because the Green Vine Duchy’s territory was extremely flat, an endless plain.
Losing the border defenses meant the entire Duchy was exposed to the Demon Beast Tide’s assault. So, after taking this location, Lince just had to wait for the allied army of the nearby Lords to arrive.
’Grinding EXP isn’t shameful.’
’If I detect any High Tier units, I don’t mind making a swift retreat.’
’After all, I have a clear understanding of my own Power.’
’I wouldn’t dare to think of myself as a god.’
Therefore, holding this stretch of border wall on the plains was the best course of action for now.
From here, he could advance to attack or retreat to "run."
’The escape has to be quick.’
Fortunately, in the following days, the Beast Tide didn’t encounter any High Tier humans at all.
Only two waves of allied forces arrived.
The first was an allied force of five thousand with three Middle Tier individuals, but they were ambushed by Lince’s Earth-attribute Demon Beasts halfway to the border. During the skirmish, Lince himself took action, effortlessly crushing two unlucky Middle Tier Knights—a Count and a Viscount. The Shadow Wind Giant Eagle devoured the third one.
The last force was quite large, with over twenty thousand elite human soldiers led by a Marquis of the Green Vine Duchy.
But this Marquis seemed to know of Lince’s so-called "Divine Dragon" identity. Therefore, he did not attack directly, but instead sent a messenger to parley.
The message was simple.
He had no intention of opposing the King or the Truth.
He was powerless to defy the Duke’s choice, but he hoped Lince, for the sake of the Truth, would not allow the Demon Tide to attack the border territories.
He would make a show of stationing his troops at the border, hoping that both sides could avoid conflict as much as possible.
A Tier Six Marquis, and four or five Middle Tier great noble Lords from various regions.
Lince, of course, was not afraid, but his identity was, after all, special.
So, he nodded in agreement.
Besides, Lince felt that the current situation was acceptable enough.
’Judging by how this Marquis wants to avoid conflict, the war on the Kingdom’s side must be going very smoothly.’
’I reckon this turmoil is about to end soon!’
After all, the entire Kingdom’s civil war had already lasted for nearly one hundred and fifty days.
In a world with Extraordinary Power, for a war to last this long, it was clearly approaching its final, decisive stage.
Unfortunately, York was little more than a quartermaster in this great war.
He had never been to the front lines from beginning to end, so he knew even less about the situation there.
When switching perspectives, Lince naturally didn’t know the specific details of the great war either.
However, by piecing together the scattered news York had heard, Lince could also sense that the turmoil was about to end.
The southern main front of the Green Vine Duchy had already lost nearly half its territory, and at the same time, two Duchies in the north of the Kingdom had also been conquered.
’Is the Inference Day ending this soon?’
’More than a year has passed so quickly, and it’s been quite fulfilling.’
The Rock Steel Giant Dragon stood atop the border’s high tower, gazing at the distant skyline, feeling as if it were only yesterday.
