Chapter 116: Chapter 116 Mercenary Force

The Blue Sand Kingdom was incredibly swift in its actions, taking less than three days for a Knight Team to enter the desert and arrive at the outskirts of Quicksand Village, which Fang Jie had decorated to resemble a regular Undead City.

As for Quicksand Village, it instead appeared to resemble an affiliated military base.

The Blue Sand Kingdom wouldn’t consider that place anything special until it was confirmed as a territory.

"Please sit, I am Duogu, the person in charge of the desert region," said the towering skeleton, over two meters tall, to the person opposite him.

"Hello, I am Morale, the Earl on the border of the Blue Sand Kingdom." After they sat down, Morale suddenly said, "The term ’person in charge’ must stem from the civilization of that ’universal lord’, right?"

Duogu reacted quickly, "Indeed, we do have people from that civilization under our command. We find some aspects of that civilization quite intriguing." Since the skeleton had no facial expressions, Morale couldn’t discern anything from its face.

After all, they were just Undead, not like normal humans.

Then, the two sides began negotiations, but on the first day, they just made small talk, discussing things that weren’t very useful.

As an Undead, Duogu felt some annoyance, but this was a task assigned by Fang Jie, so Duogu had no choice but to chat with the other party, lacking expertise, but firmly holding the bottom line.

"That was impressive, to spot the issue so quickly. We were almost exposed."

Fang Jie nodded in agreement: "Yes, it’s unexpected that a mere title could reveal so much. It seems he has had quite some interaction with our compatriots, we just don’t know the extent."

Fang Jie was somewhat worried, as the ones who knew him best were definitely his own compatriots.

"For the time being, there’s no need to worry. After all, nobody would expect a power that has just arrived here could develop to this extent. Even those with backers don’t have this kind of development speed."

Qin Lan was confident that Fang Jie’s side wouldn’t be exposed for the time being.

"Besides, even if we are exposed, it probably won’t pose a big issue."

Fang Jie pointed to the opposite side: "Those are Gold Level combat forces, an entire team of twenty. Do you think they would fear us?" Fang Jie pointed to the distant Knight Squad, whose ranks were quite clear in his eyes.

Qin Lan could also tell, as this was one of the abilities of their lord.

"Maybe it’s just for deterrence. We are not sure how difficult it is for them to bring out these Gold Level knights. We can investigate these matters later, but we can be sure that higher levels would not be so readily made available."

"We can’t be sure how they view us, whether they take us seriously or disregard us completely."

Fang Jie agreed deeply, "So, how shall we test them?"

"Even though they probably won’t attack us rashly, they certainly won’t let us leave easily." The desert region was essentially surrounded by the Blue Sand Kingdom; to go further, one would have to battle them.

This was the most problematic aspect on land; there was no way around it.

Qin Lan thought for a moment and then said, "There is one way, we could accept employment as mercenaries."

"Our forces are Undead in the desert; they can only grow stronger and more numerous, something they are sure to be worried about. Although their own capabilities are diminished in the desert, they cannot be unguarded."

"But accepting mercenary work is different. They will surely employ our strength to attack others, thereby conserving their own forces and depleting our living resources, and further, they could probe our actual strength."

From the perspective of the Blue Sand Kingdom, this would indeed be very useful.

"You mean, we propose mercenary terms in exchange for something?"

"No, not proposing terms but presenting ourselves as a Mercenary Force, so they won’t perceive us as a nation or territory. Only then will they feel completely at ease."

A Mercenary Force, Fang Jie pondered; indeed, it was a reassuring notion. Nobody would think that a Mercenary Force could pose much of an impact. Even if one day they attacked their own, blame would likely fall on the opposing forces.

After some thorough contemplation, Fang Jie found no issue with the plan and thus agreed.

"Alright, let’s go with that. The subsequent details will be handled by Duogu."

Duogu had emerged as a hero in the recent battles, recently breaking through to Silver Level and becoming a Skeleton General. Fang Jie placed him in this region to demonstrate the importance he placed on the desert.

"We can’t let him act entirely on his own. Negotiations between nations must go through strife; it is only through struggle that they will truly trust what they gain."

Here, Qin Lan had a much clearer understanding than Fang Jie.

"Fine, fine, then you make the arrangements." Fang Jie detested such matters; he would rather spend time studying his Spells, striving to advance to the Bronze Level as soon as possible.

Although this level of strength was insignificant compared to the powers he controlled, it was still his own.

Qin Lan differed from Fang Jie, placing greater emphasis on the development of power and not taking his personal strength enhancement to heart, even though he possessed good Talent and foundation.

Following this, under Qin Lan’s command, Duogu and the opposition waged fierce debates daily.

"This is very interesting; this Duogu, although in charge here, is definitely not the leader of this force. There’s surely a higher Commander behind him."

"Do you believe what they say, my lord, that they are just a Mercenary Force?"

"Nobody knows; it could be a temporary ruse. But since they accept employment, we might as well give it a try and clarify their true strength," Morale stated.

"Alright, this is someone else’s territory, let’s not discuss too much."

Morale looked around, wary of his words leaking out. Upon hearing this, the Knight who had been persistent in his questioning shut up; their presence was merely to protect Morale’s movements.

Such a vast Undead Power in this desert region—if not controlled, the Blue Sand Kingdom would undeniably face great pressure, so they must find a way to scrutinize the situation thoroughly.

After all, humans as a species struggle to live and fight in the desert for extended periods.

In just a few days, these Gold Level powerhouses felt extremely uncomfortable adapting to the conditions.
