Even for someone who had lived for countless years, life remained unpredictable. Emotions, fleeting yet powerful, often turned into an uncontrollable mess, and Wen Ran found himself lost in their chaotic grip. He wasn't sure why he felt compelled to do this, why his heart refused to let him walk away. Was it to challenge his own pride? Was it to break free from the bitterness that had consumed him for so long?

He didn't know.

This life of his was supposed to be quiet, a lonely path that led him back to the world where immortals waged war against gods. Yet somehow, it no longer felt so simple.

"What an interesting twist of fate," Wen Ran muttered under his breath. "I have a woman who loves me blindly, a master willing to sacrifice himself for me, and people who call themselves my friends."

His lips curled into a faint smile, small, soft, and so genuine that if anyone had seen him at that moment, they would have struggled to believe this was the same Wen Ran they knew. The ruthless demonic cultivator smiling like an innocent child was something nobody would have believed.

But even as that rare smile graced his face, an unwelcome truth stirred within him, cold and relentless.

He knew he could never enjoy this life.

No matter how tempting it was to embrace those feelings, he knew the cost would be far too high. Anyone he allowed close would be dragged into the storm that followed him, a storm he had no control over. His war against the gods would swallow everything in its path, and if he tied himself to love, friendship, or family, they would only slow him down or die for his sake.

For Wen Ran, walking this path alone was the only way to ensure his heart remained unburdened, to live without regret.

All these people he met along the way, whether from his past, present, or future, they would always be nothing more than passerby in his journey to the world beyond this little realm. Maybe, when he had finished his quest and ended the era of gods, maybe then he would be able to return and embrace those things he once denied himself.

That is, if he survived.

"I made a grave mistake in the past…" Wen Ran murmured under his breath, his voice low and hoarse. "I trusted too blindly, and it cost me my life. In this life, I should avoid keeping my friends close."

His words came in strained huffs as he sprinted through dense forests and rugged mountain ranges. His muscles burned, his breath felt heavy, yet he pushed forward. There was no room to stop, not when his master's life hung in the balance. Wen Ran knew if he abandoned this mission, if his master died because of him, it would leave a bitter taste that would never wash away.

To be honest, even Wen Ran himself could not believe he was doing this. Just weeks ago, if given the chance, he would not have hesitated to kill his master in a heartbeat. So why now?

Was it because the old man had saved him?

Was it because Wen Ran still carried the scars of betrayal, the memory of his brother's blade plunging into his back?

Or was it something deeper, something Wen Ran himself could not yet understand?

Only he knew the answer.

And even that was buried deep within his heart.

Days passed, and his old quest had completely faded from his mind. Now, only the new system quest and the urgent need to help his master remained.

That moment when the system message informed him that he could regain some of his lifespan through certain quests had left him stunned. At first, his face revealed a mix of shock and fleeting joy, as if fate had finally tossed him a scrap of mercy. But that feeling lasted only for a heartbeat before a seething rage erupted from within him.

"YOU PIECE OF SHIT!" Wen Ran roared at the top of his lungs, his voice tearing through the forest. His fingers clenched tightly, his nails biting into his palms as his face twisted with fury. He thought back to all those moments when his lifespan had been ruthlessly stripped away, each year stolen like grains of sand slipping through his fingers. And now, the system dared to call this pathetic reward of ten years a gift?

To Wen Ran, this was worse than a slap in the face.

"This system... this cursed thing..." His voice trembled with rage. "How can you call something a reward when you're only giving back what you stole in the first place?"

It felt like someone had stolen a bone from a starving dog, only to return a splinter of it after gnawing away most of the meat for themselves. The insult made his blood boil, and for a brief moment, Wen Ran wondered if it would be easier to end it all than to keep fighting against something that seemed determined to torment him.

But as his anger slowly subsided, he forced himself to breathe deeply. Letting his rage control him now would accomplish nothing.

He shook his head, pushing the thought aside. The fury lingered, burning quietly like embers beneath the surface, but he refused to dwell on it. Instead, his focus shifted back to something far more intriguing — the new system options.

As he continued his journey, he finally spoke the command aloud.

"User Menu."

The air before him rippled, and a screen as black as ink materialized from thin air. Its shadowy glow seemed to swallow the surrounding light, and upon its surface appeared a familiar sight — the same menu he had seen when he first awakened the system.
