Grand Ascension-Chapter 72: MIO Arrival
Two days had passed since the incident near Post Office Street. Elias had already stabilized and had been sent home by Celine.
Zack’s body had been taken to the morgue. Further investigation would be carried out to know more about who he was and why he had been after Makun.
During this time, Makun had remained asleep, his wounds slowly healing after Celine’s care. She could not do much and had tried her best. Only solution was to get a higher-tier healer. But due to the lack of activity in Naija City, the third-grade Apprentice Healer of the group was affected elsewhere.
Zorak and Zuri remained held captive, awaiting the MIO arrival, which was today.
The six stories tall VEB HQ was plain all year round, with its narrow windows and a faded gray exterior that always blended into row of offices beside it.
The goal was to keep it bland, to avoid attracting attention from the passerby and they had succeeded. No one who passed by stopped to ask themselves what this building was for.
As such, the VEB HQ of Naija City remained bland all year long. Unless there was an exception.
And that exception was taking place right now.
In an attempt to create warmth, if it could be called that, the agents of the VEB had decorated the Main Hall. They hung a single banner across the far wall, stretched between two support beams, reading "WELCOME MIO" in bold, black letters on white fabric. Just plain black text on a white background.
Beneath it a table had been set up with a plain white cloth draped over it, and on top sat a neat row of water bottles spaced exactly six inches apart, a stack of disposable cups beside a standard-issue coffee dispenser.
An interior designer would have puked at the sight of this.
Inside the building stood every agent of the VEB, eighteen agents of varying levels and routes. Some were scholars, others were merchants, one seer, and the rest were warriors. They stood silently in the room with no one saying a word, all waiting for the arrival of the MIO agents.
In front of the building the Nordic giant Jorg stood with his hands crossed behind his back. He was waiting. They were gonna be here soon and he had to attend to them.
The sound came first, a low hum cutting through the early morning quiet.
Jorg’s gaze shifted toward the street.
A black sedan turned the corner, sleek and unmarked, moving at a steady pace. It then pulled to the curb and stopped with a soft hiss of brakes
The engine cut off.
Silence, Jorg did not move, he waited.
The driver’s door opened first.
A man stepped out. He looked young, was slightly built and wore a neatly pressed button-down shirt tucked into dress pants. His orange-tinted blue blocker glasses caught the early morning light, giving him an almost clinical appearance. He adjusted his glasses with one hand, scanning the VEB building with a calm, assessing gaze, then moved to the rear passenger door.
He opened it.
An olive-skinned woman stepped out, her hair pulled into a tight bun. She wore simple clothing, a dark jean, a plain jacket and sneakers. Her features were average, unremarkable, the kind of face that blended into any crowd.
Then the rear door on the opposite side opened.
Golden hair spilled out, thick and lustrous. She had a lean and athletic physique and radiated a calm but undeniable presence. She wore a long dark coat over practical combat attire and her face was covered by a veil, exposing only her eyes, which were dark. A huge contrast to her golden hair.
Yime stepped forward, her shoes clicking softly against the pavement. She stopped a few feet from Jorg, her expression unchanged. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
They had been called to investigate, not to dawdle, and Yime was pragmatic about professionalism.
"Agent Jorg," she said in her usual calm soft and clear voice. "It’s been a while."
Jorg’s expression too did not change. Every acquaintance he had knew without a doubt that he was nonchalant. Jorg rarely reacted.
"Mrs. Yime," he said, his voice low and measured. "Welcome to Naija City."
Yime’s gaze flicked past him, taking in the VEB building, the bland banner hanging inside and the eighteen VEB agents standing rigid and silent in the Main Hall.
Her lips pressed together, as she felt slightly amused. She could tell they had tried their best to welcome them.
"WOOO, what a nice deco, yeah... really nice." "By this point, Orel had already strutted over to where Yime stood.
His calm demeanor vanished, replaced by the outspoken troublemaker who spoke with deliberate sarcasm, as if daring Jorg to react. But Jorg did not react.
"Could have at least put more effort in." He said and walked passed Jorg to enter the building. "Tch. It is gonna be fun."
Orel strongly believed that by provoking people, he could get information from them.
He firmly believed that a person reacting emotionally to you, was someone who gave you power over them.
That is how he always looked for trouble.
No one could stop him.
Yime said nothing. Orel was just like that. She could have stopped him....should have stopped him...but his provocations often yielded results. And besides, Jorg would not break. she knew it.
"Shall we?" she said, gesturing toward the entrance.
Jorg stepped aside, his hands still clasped behind his back.
"After you."
Yime walked past him, her stride steady. Amelia followed silently behind her, her aura absent, as if she were not there at all.
Jorg let them pass, watching their backs as they entered.
"Every agent in MIO was an expert beyond recognition.. He knew because he had been a member of MIO before. So he was not fooled by the provocative Orel and the calm Amelia. He knew that when it came to it, they always produced results.
However, the situation this time was complex. He had already found what transpired at apartment 3B, which means they had to focus on Bol & Cheryl which they had no info on.
He shook his head. This had nothing to do with him anymore. He was just gonna chill.
He followed after them, the door closing itself behind him.
The MIO had arrived.
