Grand Return System-Chapter 5: The Door Opens
The Door Opens
Wind bit at Selena’s face while she gripped the sword’s hilt, riding its path high above the world. Around her, colors spilled sideways - purple so rich it felt like drowning, mixed with light that didn’t belong to any sun.
Fear would have made sense. Instead, she felt nothing at all.
A sudden rush lifted her above the trees, though she’d never strayed far past the mountain’s base. Riding light instead of steel, she cut across empty air. Not wings, but raw energy carried her forward. The ground shrank beneath boots that once knew only stone paths. High wind met wide eyes unused to horizons. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Fear might have been expected instead.
A light inside her trembled, uneven. Still, it held.
Stiffness in the air. Light spills everywhere. Shaky, like something might finally go right.
Wind caught each motion of the blade, pulling strands of pale hair into glowing trails. Sky-colored eyes held a look too wide for comfort - sharp with wonder, thin with doubt.
Waiting. A little unsteady. This could be a start.
Only then did the long road reveal its true shape
What makes a heartbeat shake like that?
She looked at the one moving the knife forward. Ahead of her, his hands stayed steady on the tool.
Leon.
Her Teacher.
A rush of wind sent his black hair streaming back like shadows unspooling into the chill. Quietness lived in his purple gaze, lids low, still enough to soften even the sharp bite of the breeze.
A shadow of violet thread traced the edges of his midnight cloak, draping a high silhouette as if night sky had learned to fold itself around him.
Far from what you’d expect of someone running a team.
Falling from the sky was never part of his plan. He stood there, out of place, as if clouds had dropped him by accident.
Far from the cold stares of rival captains, this warmth burned slow and steady.
Not harsh at all. Dismissiveness never showed up in his manner. Worth escaped cold calculation, nothing like a trader stacking silver.
Quietness moved through his hands like something sharp. His soft voice carried weight none expected.
Soft in a way that feels safe to lean on.
Selena’s chest tightened.
He chose me.
That moment he picked me - others had already walked off.
Footsteps behind him made Leon turn, each time a silent breath, quickly gone.
"Are you steady?""Don’t be afraid. I won’t let you fall.""The air is thinner here. Breathe slowly."
Easy does it. Just flows that way.
As if her emotions mattered just the same.
Like she mattered.
Heat moved into her ribs - scary, yet soft - almost as if a wall lifted where she believed only stone stood.
Working hard was necessary, she told herself without speaking. To cause him shame could not happen.
-
Falling through the dark, a slash of purple glow cut the air.
Footsteps echoed as they moved downward, aiming for the tallest summit - alone above all others - where Celestis Academy stood. The air thinned, silence thickened, each step a quiet breach into untouched heights
The Amethyst Summit Division.
Far off, the place seemed empty.
Fog curled around broken edges of stone, clinging tight. Among them, old homes pressed close, crooked and mended, held fast by stubbornness rather than strength. Above, beams shivered now and then - whispering memories worn thin.
A forgotten place.
A broken nest where myths once slept. Stories slipped away like sand through fingers.
A space where she might turn into who she wanted to be.
First one down was Leon. Right behind him came Selena - feet meeting loose stones with a soft crackle. Shaky legs wavered under her weight; she braced, warmth rising into her face.
That’s us arrived," Leon remarked, voice steady.
She looked around.
A trail of worn stones winds through the quiet. Petals drift down from one lone plum tree, soft as frost on still air. Homes crouch low, built long ago, holding firm even when wind howls.
Leon didn’t apologize.
Facing the small wooden house in the middle, he stood upright, calm. Stillness held his posture, centered, quiet. The frame of the building met his gaze without shift. A steady presence marked the moment, unmoving.
"I walk the immortal path," he said softly. "So I follow my heart. I eat when I choose. Rest when I choose. Walk where my heart leads."
A wave of his hand took in the plain room around them.
"Though the conditions are simple, they temper the spirit. Poverty grounds us. Simplicity clears the mind. These things will steady you... and remind you what truly matters."
He paused.
A small jerk pulled at one side of his lips.
Bent on holding some pride, yet they both noticed it slipping through. Still, he wouldn’t let go of what little composure remained.
Once held in high regard, Zeon now lay drained of wealth, overlooked as rival sectors thrived nearby. His unease slipped under the surface, masked by stillness.
Yet something caught Selena’s eye anyway.
Yet beneath what might have been sorrow... a quiet warmth settled inside her chest.
Fine, I get it," she whispered, looking down.
His eyes warmed.
"Other than this house," Leon continued, "choose whichever one you like. From today onward, you are the nineteenth-generation eldest student of the Amethyst Summit Division - and the future successor of this division."
Her breath caught.
Successor?
"As the eldest student, you must train diligently. Lead by example. One day, your juniors will look to you."
Out of his mouth came the exact phrases Zeon had said before. That moment echoed another time, years gone by. The air carried a weight it knew long ago.
Something inside her changed. The air turned different around Selena. Her breath caught before she even realized why. Time slowed without warning. A quiet crack ran through everything she knew. Nothing fit the way it had a moment earlier.
Fate shifted overnight. Now standing where few believed possible.
She bowed deeply.
"Teacher, I will not disappoint you."
A sigh slipped out from Leon, softness passing through his eyes.
Fleeing had crossed his mind that very first morning. Maybe she feels it too, he thought.
Yet there she remained, unmoving.
"Well then," he said. "Since you’ve acknowledged me, I won’t hide things from you."
A small pill came from inside his sleeve, round and glowing, its light rising and falling like something alive. It sat there in his palm, quiet but moving, as if it had a breath of its own.
The Blood & Bone Elixir.
"This elixir is mortal grade, but powerful. It will cleanse your body and help you sense mana more quickly."
Selena’s eyes widened.
"Teacher... this..."
Fresh out of her first lesson, yet he handed over a gift without price.
She remembered the whispers.
Hoarding supplies came naturally to most leaders. Rather than give up even one medicine, they’d leave learners behind. A dragon’s greed felt familiar in their grip.
But Leon...
Without pausing, he handed it over to her.
It’s clear he trusts what I can do.
She swallowed.
"Thank you, Teacher. I will not disappoint you."
The medicine went into her hand, then her mouth. A sip of water followed after.
Instantly it melted away - heat rushing, then thunder crackling inside her.
A shiver ran down her arms. Into every joint, a hum grew louder. Deep inside the bone, something stirred awake. Waves of energy pushed out what felt heavy, leaving only motion behind.
Out came a dark ooze through her skin - clotted, sour, decades of human flaw reduced to smoke. A slow drip down her arms carried what once clung beneath the surface. Heat had cracked it open. Not pain, but pressure. The air turned heavy with old mistakes given form. Each breath pulled more out. Her body trembled under its own release. Nothing sharp, just weight leaving. Like mud rising after silence. Then stillness.
A warmth rose in her face. Sharpness crept into sight, sound, touch - everything snapped into focus. Colors burned stronger. Light pressed harder against the eyes. Life throbbed just beyond skin.
A strange heat rose as her skin began to shift. This form didn’t fit right - lighter than memory, washed of the old grit. The air touched her like a stranger.
Her eyes dropped, face burning with shame.
A quiet laugh slipped out from Leon.
"There’s a hot spring behind the mountain. Go wash up."
She walks by. His eyes stay forward. Not a smirk tugs at his mouth. Nothing about her shape leaves his lips.
Just direction - respectful and matter-of-fact.
Selena bowed.
"Thank you, Teacher... I’ll go now."
A gust caught her silver hair as she moved fast, strands trailing like light spilled from the sky. It slipped through the air after her, glinting with every step that took her further. The wind carried pieces of it forward even as her figure faded into distance. Each strand seemed lit from within, weaving through shadows without sound.
Fog swallowed her shape as Leon stood still.
A small bend touched his mouth.
Alright...
Blood pounded faster inside his chest.
"Grand Return System," he whispered inwardly. "Come out. Where’s my return?"
Sound like glass rang inside his head.
[DING.]
His breath hitched.
At last...
Change started creeping into everything. Slow shifts showed up everywhere first light touched.
