Chapter 97: Tea, Gold, and a Sudden Awakening

Tea, Gold, and a Sudden Awakening

"Guardian Elder is really humble. I’ve learned my lesson..." Kevin said quietly, bowing slightly.

Now his voice held nothing but honesty. Mockery had vanished completely.

After a pause, Leon stayed quiet.

A quiet moment passed before he raised the delicate cup, sipping the Imperial Vein Tea once more with deliberate calm.

A hint of sharpness hit at first - harsh, nearly jarring. This lingered on the tongue, much like struggle feels in the bones. Yet once he allowed it to rest, a deep heat unfolded inside his ribs, full and gentle, resembling relief earned through long waiting.

"...Mm."

He exhaled softly.

A gust nudged the bamboo shade past the timber walls. Through the open entrance, peach blooms floated inside, circling slow, ending close to where his feet rested.

Ah...

Money leaves a bitter flavor on the tongue.

A shadow of a grin touched his lips - then vanished just before it could settle.

Frost seemed to slip down her back as Selena shifted, a quiet tilt of the head catching light between threads of pale hair.

"Teacher," she asked curiously, her blue eyes blinking with confusion, "what’s going on outside? Why are there so many people on our Amethyst Summit Division?"

A small nod came fast from Rias, her red fabric whispering with each shift. Then stillness settled around her like dust after motion.

"That’s right. When we came back just now, we saw many people on the north mountain."

Down went the cup, placed soft by Leon.

For a moment, silence filled the space between them. Then came his voice, slow and careful.

Stillness crept in while he waited. Heat lingered through the cup, slow and quiet. Air moved before words did.

That was when his voice came, steady and low

"They are from the Taylor household."

A small lift came to Kevin’s eyebrows.

A slow calm filled his words, like he was talking about clouds. The way he spoke made it sound ordinary.

"They sent gifts. Ten thousand coin. And they intend to construct a new training hall for us."

Selena’s eyes widened.

"Really?"

Rias gasped softly, hands clasping in front of her chest. The golden sash at her waist swayed as she shifted excitedly.

Over the past few days, Selena had taken Rias around the Seven Division. They had seen the towering halls of Secret Sword Summit, the imposing courtyards of Black Sword Summit, the grand structures of the First Division.

Compared to those—

Amethyst Summit Division had looked... pitiful.

A few wooden houses.

Wind-worn beams.

A training hall that creaked louder than the bamboo in a storm.

"Doesn’t that mean we’ll have a new house to live in in the future?" Rias asked, barely able to contain her excitement.

Leon nodded.

"Yes. There will be a new hall."

He paused deliberately.

Then his tone shifted—not louder, but deeper.

"However... we are cultivators."

The air in the room seemed to steady.

"We do not cultivate for comfort. Nor for appearance. Nor for admiration." 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

A faint shift in his gaze, those violet eyes rising just enough to meet nothing at all.

"If your heart relies on walls of stone and roofs of gold, then when those things collapse, so will you."

Kevin’s breath caught.

Water moved easy through his words, each one a stone worn down by time.

"Cultivation is not about escaping poverty. Nor is it about pursuing luxury."

A small motion of his hand nodded at the door left wide.

"Look at the bamboo. It bends in the wind. It does not resist, yet it does not break. It does not care whether it grows beside a palace or a hut."

Back again, his eyes found the followers.

"If you cling to the facade, you lose the root. If you chase status, you forget the path."

Then, softer:

"Only by staying close to nature can you understand it. Only by following your own heart can you remain free."

Kevin’s fingers trembled slightly.

He hadn’t expected this.

He thought Leon would simply accept the coin and smile.

Instead—

He felt as if someone had quietly peeled back the layer of dust covering his own thoughts.

Leon continued, voice almost contemplative.

"All things in the world arise from existence. And existence arises from what is unseen."

"If you chase what is seen... you miss what truly matters."

He looked at Selena and Rias again.

"We accept the new hall. Not because we need luxury. But because stability gives you time. And time gives you cultivation."

His eyes sharpened faintly.

"But if I ever see either of you lose focus because of comfort... I will personally tear that comfort away."

Selena straightened instantly.

"Yes, Teacher."

Rias swallowed and nodded quickly.

Kevin, however—

Kevin felt as if a heavy stone had been placed against his chest.

He had spent years obsessing over his title as chief disciple of Celestis Academy. Every word he spoke was measured. Every action calculated. Every failure magnified.

He had watched others surpass him.

Watched Rex Vine step ahead by four minor star stages.

Watched whispers grow.

He told himself it was about responsibility.

But was it?

Or was it fear of losing status?

"...Only by following your heart can you remain free..."

He repeated the words unconsciously.

His thoughts spiraled.

When did I start cultivating for approval?

When did I forget why I picked up a sword?

He remembered his early days.

Training until his palms bled.

Not for recognition.

Not for praise.

Just for the joy of breaking limits.

A faint tremor passed through his body.

Leon noticed it immediately.

"...Hm?"

Kevin lowered his head.

"The Principal can be spoken... yet what is spoken is not the eternal Principal..."

He murmured quietly, voice barely audible.

"All things under heaven arise from It... and return to It..."

The air shifted.

Not violently.

Not explosively.

But gently—like a lake surface disturbed by a single stone.

A soft glow began to emanate from Kevin’s body.

His breathing slowed.

The tension that had always lingered in his shoulders—tight, invisible—seemed to melt.

Selena stepped back instinctively.

"Teacher... is this..."

Rias whispered, eyes widening.

Leon narrowed his gaze.

The bamboo outside stilled, as if listening.

Mana gathered around Kevin—not chaotically, but harmoniously. It flowed toward him as if answering a silent call.

A gentle aura expanded outward.

The bitterness on his face faded.

His brows, once furrowed by hidden anxiety, smoothed.

"...A breakthrough?" Selena asked in disbelief.

Leon watched quietly.

He did not interfere.

He did not speak.

He simply observed.

This was not a breakthrough born from pills.

Nor from absorbing precious bones.

Nor from forced advancement.

This was—

A breakthrough of the heart.

And sometimes—

That was the most dangerous kind.
