Two weeks later, Headmistress Godfrey finally arrived at the gates of Hannes City.
When the guards stationed there saw her, they were greatly taken aback. They hurriedly approached her and respectfully greeted her.

"Good day, My Lady!"
"Please allow me to inform Count Hannes of your arrival!"
The old headmistress waved her hand dismissively. "There's no need for that."
She stepped foot on the wild cobblestoned streets of the city and looked around with a faint smile, "Has anything worthwhile happened while I was away?"
The city guards looked at one another before one of them stepped forward and said with a deferential bow, "Reporting to the lady! Nothing major has happened in the past few months."
He paused for a moment, recalling something, and added. "There was, however, a pirate ship that had tried to dock at the harbor, but they were swiftly taken care of and handed over to the city's law enforcement."
Although, in name, the City of Sails was the domain of Count Hannes. In truth, however, it was now governed by none other than the Headmistress of Clover Academy.
The Count was merely a Mana Foundation Magus, whereas the Headmistress was a mighty Mana Vortex Magus.
So there was no question in the hearts of those who worked in the city about who the current overseer of Hannes City was.
Ever since the existence of the underground vampire's lair had been brought to light, the Clover Academy had openly made its presence known in the city.
The upper echelons of Hannes City had changed ever since then, and its true ruler, Count Hannes, had been reduced to little more than a figurehead.
Still, there was nothing he or anyone else, for that matter, could do about it.
In front of the might of a Rank 3 - Mana Vortex Magus, nothing mattered.
This was a world where strength was respected above all.
In the end, might becomes law!
Headmistress Godfrey nodded ever so slightly before proceeding towards the heart of the city.
First, she made a quick stop at the Academy's branch, making sure things were in order.
She held a brief meeting with all the Mana Liquefaction Professors, ensuring that the academic year was going on smoothly and that there were no hiccups.
After settling all the matters at the academy building, she headed towards the alleyway that was being guarded by the Magi of the Academy.
When those Magi saw her, they greeted her with the utmost respect. This was the mighty head of the Clover Academy, after all—a figure who was at the top of the power structure in the Southern Federation.
"Did you find anything suspicious?" She asked the head of the guards.
"No, my lady," The man respectfully answered. "No one other than the Academy professors and a handful of Magi from the city's nobility that you gave permission to have entered."
The elderly woman hummed, nodding her head ever so slightly. "Did they find anything peculiar in the tunnels? Or in the lair?"
"No, my lady," the man confidently answered.
Headmistress Godfrey silently nodded before entering the alley, leaving behind her parting words. "Make sure no one enters while I'm inside."
"Yes, my lady!" All the guards standing at the mouth of the alley responded in unison.
Unbeknownst to them, a dragonfly buzzed past them, entering the alley.
It hovered mid-air, watching the old headmistress walk through the wall on the other end. After several minutes had passed, the dragonfly made its move and unhesitatingly dove inside the wall.
…
In the black-and-white tunnel, Headmistress Godfrey observed the runes carved on the wall with narrowed eyes. She then walked towards the vampire's lair, ensuring that none were inside other than her.
Inside the dimly-lit chamber, she found a few professors of the Academy trying to study the mysteries that permeated the air. She even found an old man sitting on the ground and practicing mindfulness.
A scoff escaped her lips. "Everyone, please leave for the time being," she instructed.
The few Magi were taken aback by the sudden arrival of the Headmistress, but soon they did as told.
After they had left, the elderly woman walked around the lair, scrutinizing every inch of the place. She then walked towards the vampire's chamber where the obsidian coffin lay.
Her gaze lingered on the coffin for a little while, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. But soon, her expression returned to normal.
'Helene, you must never enter the heart of the cavern!'
The Headmistress recalled the order of the mysterious figure she had met centuries ago.
She cast one final glance at the coffin, which covered the entrance to the heart of the cavern, before turning around and walking back towards the tunnel.
She then stopped before a particular section of the wall. This was the place she had last worked on. The following moment, she conjured an object that resembled a chisel as well as a quill.
This was an item used by Runesmiths to carve runes. Its importance to a Runesmith was equivalent to how a cauldron was to a Herbalist.
Then, she conjured a leather bound book. She flipped it open to a certain page and noticed the otherworldly and ominous characters on it. It caused a chill to crawl down her spine, but she was used to it by now.
Her eyes flickered with a strange light before she began copying the characters in the book onto the wall of the tunnel. She diligently carried out the instructions she was given by the mysterious figure.
The characters and symbols on the pages of the book were written in the language of the Devils.
It was Infernac!
And what the Headmistress Godfrey was inscribing on the wall was no different than strengthening the runes that had already been in place for centuries.
Several meters away from her, an unassuming dragonfly perched on the wall, silently gazing at her.
Suddenly, Headmistress Godfrey stopped inscribing the runes on the wall. She slowly turned her head and gazed in the direction of the dragonfly.
The elderly woman's cold gaze landed on the unassuming little creature.
But soon… her expression returned to normal, and she muttered under her breath, "Just an insect."
She turned back around and resumed her work.
But the dragonfly… it remained still.
Its gaze seemingly flickering with anger, disbelief, and…
The sting of betrayal.
