Guide To Train My Beast Husbands-Chapter 246: Punishment
"You cannot ask me to stay away from my own sister—"
"Sister?" Elder Zhi turned her fat waist to look behind the rest of the elders. She said to them, "Did you hear what he said? He called the vessel of the beast goddess his sister."
The elders chortled upon hearing her remark; they all looked at Ruan Zeqiu as if he were a fool, and that only made him grit his teeth in hatred. Clenching his fists on his lap, he exclaimed loudly, "My sister is not a vessel. She is a human being—"
"Silence. You do not have the right to defend yourself when you have clearly failed the vessel." Elder Zhi waved her hand dismissively. She didn’t take the words spoken by Ruan Zeqiu seriously; in fact, she believed that the mer was overstepping the boundaries by questioning her. Elder Zhi then raised her head and glanced at the two mers. "Even if you are unwilling to accept the punishment, you have to admit that you have failed Ruan Chanchan."
The words fell like a blade, and neither Ruan Zeqiu nor Yuan Ni could deny them. Because what the woman said was indeed the truth. If they had never taken Ruan Chanchan to those small mountains, then maybe her life would have never been put at risk.
"Yuan Ni, you—"
"What is going on?" Ruan Chanchan interrupted whatever the elder was going to say and walked over to the small clearing where the punishment was being handed out. She looked at her brother, who was kneeling along with Yuan Ni and turned to look at the elders, who were holding the two of them accountable. "And just what is going on?"
She heard from the chief that her brother and Yuan Ni were punished to kneel, but from the things happening in the clearing, it was quite certain that this was not just a simple matter of kneeling. What did she mean by not allowing Ruan Zeqiu to see her for a month? Who was this woman to say whether her own brother could meet with her or not?
With her lips pursed, Ruan Chanchan glanced at the elder who was speaking and said to her, "They did nothing wrong. I was the one who asked them to bring me to the small mountains, and it was I who caused the trouble. You don’t have to punish them for the mistakes that I made."
Ruan Chanchan was not the kind of person who would shirk her responsibility. Since she was the one who asked them to bring her to the small mountains, she should be the one to be punished. She stepped forward and then said to the elders, "I was the one who dragged them up the mountains. If you want to blame someone, then you should blame me. Don’t punish them for something that I have done."
When Ruan Chanchan decided to go up the small mountains, she never thought that she would cause Ruan Zeqiu and Yuan Ni to end up in such big trouble. If she had known that these elders would cause such a big fuss, then she would have never made such a big fuss to go up there. When she wanted to go up the small mountains, she only wanted to save the lives of the countless totem warriors. She never once thought that she would bring such a big problem to her brother and Yuan Ni.
Beside her, Chief Xie also frowned. With her brows knitted, she said to the elders, "That shall be enough, elders. Why are you doing this? We already discussed the matter more than once last night, did we not? Is there any need for you to bring these things up?"
"Of course it is," Elder Gao rolled her eyes. She then smiled at Chief Xie and continued in a low voice, " With all due respect, Chief. This concerns the divine order and the security, as well as the safety of the tribe. Do you even know that if something had happened to Ruan Chanchan, then there is a very good chance that we might have ended up suffering a loss so severe that we might never be able to recover? The vessel blessed by the beast goddess—if something had happened to her. Do you think we could have withstood the wrath of the beast goddess?"
The implication of her words was clear.
Even the chief was not allowed to intervene in this situation.
Darling, it seemed like they were trying to isolate you by punishing your only supporters.
Of course, Ruan Chanchan knew that. She could see through the scheming actions of the elders, but there was absolutely nothing that he could do about the current situation. She turned to look at Ruan Zeqiu and parted her lips to say something, but her brother shook his head. He knew that at that very moment, even if his sister fought to the death with them, they would never listen to her.
He then turned to look at the elders and said to them, "You think that if you separate from my sister, our bond will weaken?"
"Of course not." Elder Zhi widened her eyes as if she was affronted by the words alone that the mer was making. She blinked her eyes innocently and then innocently exclaimed, "I am just doing this to drill the lesson within your heart and soul."
She then turned to look at Yuan Ni. With a polite smile on his face, he said, "And Yuan Ni." Her eyes settled on him. "You failed to restrain the divine chaos from happening. As a priest, you should have known better. You should have tried to stop this chaos from happening; it was a very good thing that the river guardian didn’t blame us and cause any trouble for the tribe. But what if he had blamed us? What then? You, despite knowing the risks, you still brought her away."
Yuan Ni bowed his head. Though it did make him feel a bit ashamed after being scolded in front of everyone, he knew that it was his own fault that he caused a big mess. Thus, even though he knew that the elders were doing something unfair, he still accepted the punishment.
"I accept the responsibility of putting the holy one in danger." Yuan Ni bowed his head and accepted the punishment without quibbling, as he knew that there was no point in quarrelling with them.
"Enough!"
The priestess slammed her staff on the ground and looked at the elders, who were determined to put the blame on her grandson. Though she admitted that Yuan Ni did make a mistake, just as Ruan Chanchan said, he was only following the request that she had made to him. He didn’t deliberately drag her away.
The entire clearing fell silent as Priestess Yuan stepped forward. Her eyes blazing with anger as she spoke in an imperious voice, "This is not a punishment that is being handed out just because my grandson failed in fulfilling his responsibility. This is simply making him the scapegoat."
"Priestess Yuan," one of the elders stepped forward and spoke in a smooth voice, "You should not allow your affection for your grandson to cloud your judgement—
"Affection?" Priestess Yuan cut in with a sneer. "What do you mean by I am letting my affection for my grandson affect my judgment? I know my grandson better than you. I know that he will never put Ruan Chanchan in danger for no reason. These kids were simply trying to help us save the lives of the totem warriors, who were always at risk just because they had to collect water from the small mountains. And do I need to explain why they had to do it?"
Chief Xie stepped forward as well. "I agree." She then turned to look at the elders and stated in a harsh, cold voice, "You are not going to punish these kids just because they tried to do that none of us dared to ever do. I am not going to turn a blind eye to such blatant unfairness. What’s more, Ruan Chanchan is to become the wife of the next chief of the tribe.... You cannot simply ignore her words as if she doesn’t hold any opinions and meaning."
Ruan Chanchan turned to look at the chief in shock, for she never knew when she agreed to become the wife of the next chief, but before she could object, the chief glanced at her, and that gaze alone silenced Ruan Chanchan.
However, the elders didn’t want to let go of the control that they might be able to gain over Ruan Chanchan if they succeeded today. So, they simply exchanged a look with one another, and then Elder Gao insisted, "However, you cannot deny that they had put Ruan Chanchan’s life in danger. So, this punishment will be carried out even if you feel that it is harsh on them."
