Gun of Ashes-Chapter 720 - 8: The Scam
Today was really a busy day, with everything piling up, waiting for him to handle it. Fortunately, none of the current issues were related to Demons; otherwise, Lorenzo would certainly not be as casual as he appeared now.
After experiencing so much, Lorenzo had a general understanding of the secrets of Old Dunling. In fact, the entire Old Dunling was like a well-guarded fortress, with an efficient transportation system, constantly patrolling airships, and those mysterious Anti-Memes—all of this was to protect the city and its core.
The Victoria Royal Family.
Troubled by the King’s Curse, they were so mysterious that, unless necessary, they almost never appeared in public, deliberately weakening their presence to the point where sometimes people forgot that this country had a queen.
Of course, regarding this part, Lorenzo wasn’t sure if their presence was genuinely so weak or if the Anti-Meme power of the Cleaners was secretly at work.
In any case, Lorenzo had too many questions about this mysterious Royal Family, and it seemed that all of these questions would be answered today.
Outside the Platinum Palace, the legion’s defensive lines were stationed, with soldiers holding weapons, gun barrels pointing upwards, like spears thrusting into the sky. After a series of checks, the carriage slowly entered an open area, where there was nothing around, only a field of verdant grass.
The magnificent palace was at the end of the grassy field, with several roads leading to it, and even artificial streams in between, giving it a beautiful appearance.
Although it looked like there was nothing here, it was the most tightly guarded place, because without any cover, from those watchtowers, even a mouse running across the grassland could be clearly seen.
Lorenzo sat inside the carriage, and he was sure that there might be several gun barrels secretly aimed at them right now. If the carriage made any unusual movements, the sound of gunfire would signal hundreds of soldiers to rush in and tear him to pieces.
"Next, follow me and don’t do anything out of line."
Opposite Lorenzo, Arthur said to him.
"Hmm... but considering the time, Her Majesty the Queen should be having lunch, right? I wonder if I have a chance to sneak a bite."
Lorenzo looked out the car window. The sky over Old Dunling was still gloomy, but at least it was better than before the rainy season, allowing some sunlight to fall through.
"Please be serious, Lorenzo. You are about to face Queen Victoria."
Arthur said with some headache.
Most of the time, when strangers met the queen, Arthur would worry if they were assassins with other agendas. But with Lorenzo, Arthur didn’t think he would try to assassinate the queen. Instead, he suspected Lorenzo might perform some strange acrobatics in front of the queen.
And all of this might just stem from the fact that Lorenzo thought it would be fun. Yes, just because he thought it would be fun.
Seeing Lorenzo’s somewhat dazed expression, Arthur somewhat understood.
Some people are just that bored.
He had already experienced the most brutal things and had faced the most terrifying monsters, so very few things could stir his emotions. That’s why he became bored and would laugh hysterically over some odd things.
When people live too long, they become like this, with a hint of madness.
...
Outside the gates of the Platinum Palace, the Royal Guards raised their guns, signaling the carriage to stop.
They were the Personal Guard directly under the Royal Family, responsible for the internal security of the Platinum Palace. This would be the last check, and they had already received word of a guest today, apart from the familiar Arthur, a newcomer too.
It’s worth noting that it was rare for new guests to arrive at the Platinum Palace, which made the Royal Guards curious about who had the honor of personally meeting Queen Victoria.
Were they male or female, tall or short, noble or lowly... this aroused everyone’s curiosity.
The carriage door was pushed open, Arthur stepped down, followed shortly by another person.
The first thing that came into view was a hairy leg, barefoot... no, he was wearing slippers, moving up to a ridiculous blue robe—wait... was that pajamas?
The expressions of the Royal Guards turned peculiar; for a moment, they were at a loss. They had faced fiercer situations, but today, the scenario truly left them perplexed.
But this wasn’t the end. The guest came down, with messy hair like a bird’s nest, looking as if he had just been dragged out of bed, appearing not fully awake.
"Oh oh oh! Is this the Platinum Palace? It’s huge!"
The guest exclaimed with the innocence of someone who had never seen the world.
"The light! The water! The... soldiers!"
He was behaving like a tourist, while Arthur’s expression grew grim. He swore, Lorenzo was definitely doing this on purpose.
From insisting on wearing pajamas, he was doing it on purpose.
"Gentlemen, please hand over your weapons."
The Royal Guards maintained their professional demeanor, not breaking into laughter at Lorenzo’s absurd entrance, and proceeded with the security process.
Arthur straightforwardly handed over the handgun from his waist, which was his only weapon, to the approaching Royal Guard.
As for Lorenzo, perhaps because he was wearing pajamas, surprisingly, no one stopped him. He didn’t move either, just stood there blankly.
