He Does Not Deserve My Devotion-Chapter 39: The Truth
Nina Walsh rushed to Maelie as fast as she could. Leo Lloyd ran out of his office, beaming and looking quite excited.
"Young Miss, you’re finally back. We were just waiting for you."
Nina was completely baffled. "What’s going on?"
Leo Lloyd said, "Young Miss, how could you have forgotten something so important? A friend of yours came to sign a contract today. I’ve already prepared it."
"A friend?"
Nina was still completely lost, and Leo Lloyd didn’t seem to know how to explain, so he just pulled her into the office.
Sitting on the cheap office sofa was a man with an air of refined dignity.
Nina’s eyes widened. "What are you doing here?"
"And why shouldn’t it be me?"
Julian Sinclair tilted his head and smirked. The lines of his lips were sharp, and his smile looked more like a sneer—scornful, cutting, and cruel.
Nina asked Leo Lloyd to step out, then personally made a cup of tea for Julian Sinclair.
Julian said, "I have to admit, I find it strange. You fought so hard to make that deal with me and get that check, only to return it unused."
Julian took a sip of tea. "I’m a man of my word. When I promise something, I deliver. So how about this? I’ll invest six million in your company to help you get this place running again."
Nina stared at Julian, trying to tell if he was serious or just joking.
Julian Sinclair picked up the contract and signed his name with a bold stroke.
"If you agree, we can sign right now."
Maelie had suffered one setback after another and was now on the verge of collapse. An injection of capital was, without a doubt, a lifeline.
But there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Julian Sinclair couldn’t possibly be this kind-hearted.
Moreover, while others might not know, she was well aware that Brian Sherman had conspired with Julian Sinclair on the Breyven project. But when the scheme came to light, Julian had emerged completely unscathed. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
He wasn’t the profligate, second-generation heir everyone thought he was.
"What’s the catch?" Nina asked.
Julian Sinclair smiled. ’Such a tempting offer... anyone else would have already agreed.’
"The condition is that I want to meet the person who tampered with the brake pads."
’Julian wanted to see Third Aunt. That must mean he’s confirmed the brake pads were deliberately damaged. His mother’s death wasn’t a simple accident.’
’Making a deal with Julian Sinclair was like making a deal with the devil. But did she have any better options right now?’
"Deal. I’ll take you to see her tomorrow," Nina said firmly.
"No. We’re going now."
Julian Sinclair stood up and walked out the door, giving Nina no time or opportunity to refuse.
...
The car drove further and further off the main roads, eventually leaving the city behind. Julian’s brows furrowed.
"We’re here."
Finally, the car stopped.
When Julian saw the words "Northgate Women’s Prison" on the building ahead, his brow tightened.
Nina said, "She’s in there, but today isn’t a visiting day. We’ll have to find someone to pull some strings."
Without a word, Julian took out his phone and made a call. When he hung up, he said, "It’s handled."
The two of them got out of the car. A prison guard came out to greet them. "Mr. Sinclair, who are you here to see?"
Nina blurted out, "East Block, Ward 3, Cell 502, number 6875."
The numbers flowed from her lips as if she had recited them hundreds of times.
Soon, Third Aunt was led out in handcuffs. She didn’t look particularly surprised to see Nina and Julian.
"Wait outside," Julian ordered.
Nina got up and waited outside the visitation room. About ten minutes later, Julian emerged, his expression terrifyingly dark.
Third Aunt had told him the true cause of his mother’s death.
Nina fell a few steps behind, silently following him.
"I’ll arrange for the funds I promised. Get a cab back yourself."
Before the words were even out of his mouth, the car shot off like a rocket.
Nina understood his mood, but joy and sorrow are not so easily shared. Her own heart was soaring, her mind filled with a single thought: ’Maelie is saved!’
’With this funding, Maelie can get back to normal operations. There are so many sales channels now. Maelie can handle everything in-house, from design to sales, without having to rely on partners.’
It was almost eight o’clock that evening when Nina returned to Maelie. The first thing she did was tell Leo Lloyd about the funding.
"Young Miss, with this money, we’re back from the dead! Tomorrow, I’ll start by hiring workers, purchasing fabric, and getting production started," Leo Lloyd said, full of confidence.
"Mr. Lloyd, please keep a close eye on the production side of things."
Nina was about to discuss some product details with Mr. Lloyd when a commotion erupted outside.
"You can’t go in there! Leave, now!"
At the main gate, the security guard, Mr. Mason, was blocking Brian Sherman from entering.
"What right do you have to stop me? Do you have any idea who I am?"
"I’m not letting you in precisely *because* I know who you are. You’re not welcome here, you piece of scum!"
"What did you just say? I’ll kill you, you damn watchdog!"
The moment Brian Sherman raised his hand, Mr. Mason’s fist slammed into the bridge of his nose. Brian’s vision went black as blood gushed from his nostrils.
"You dare hit me? I’ll kill you, you heartless son of a bitch! You’re nothing but a dog!"
Mr. Mason’s fists rained down on Brian Sherman like a storm. He owed a great debt to the Walsh Family and had long harbored a deep-seated hatred for the man.
More than a decade of hatred was pent up inside him. Now that he had the chance, he was determined to beat this animal to a pulp, even if it meant getting arrested and sent to prison!
Nina stood to the side, watching for a moment. Only when Brian Sherman was beaten to the ground did she step in to stop it.
"Mr. Mason, that’s enough. Don’t hurt your hands."
Mr. Mason, his face flushed and still looking unsatisfied, spat on Brian Sherman before walking away.
Brian Sherman, his face bruised and swollen, opened his eyes. When he saw Nina standing there, he was filled with rage.
"You wretched girl! You were in there watching your own father get beaten, you..."
Nina crossed her arms, her expression cold and detached, as if she were watching a comedy.
"If you have something to say, spit it out. What are you doing here?"
Brian Sherman struggled to his feet. "Go to Aiden Sinclair. Tell him to let the Sheridan Family off the hook."
The sheer entitlement in his voice made Nina wonder if she had heard him correctly.
"And what does that have to do with me?"
Brian Sherman said, filled with righteous indignation, "Blood is thicker than water! You’re my daughter. If the Sheridan Family falls, it won’t do you any good either. You were with Aiden for two years. He’ll surely do you this favor."
Nina was utterly speechless. She sneered, "I can’t wait for you to die. In fact, I hope the entire Sheridan Family drops dead!"
Brian Sherman’s face contorted with fury. He threatened, "What about your mother’s urn? And all her shameful secrets? You don’t care about those anymore, do you?"
"Spread whatever rumors you want. You can’t turn black into white. Stop trying to threaten me with baseless accusations! Now, get out!"
’How could I be the daughter of a man like this?’
The sight of him made her sick. She turned to leave.
Brian Sherman seemed to have an idea. He shouted at her back, "If you won’t go plead with Aiden, then I’ll tell him everything! I’ll tell him how you deliberately got close to him two years ago. How you stayed by his side just to pass business intelligence to me. I have recordings of every single call!"
’If the Sheridan Family was going down, he’d be damned if Nina Walsh got away clean. He was determined to drag her down with him.’
Nina froze. Her trembling hands clenched into fists. In an instant, her rage boiled over. She couldn’t hold back any longer. She spun around and kicked Brian Sherman.
In the distance, a tall, handsome figure slowly approached. His elegant, almond-shaped eyes were as sharp as daggers.
Aiden Sinclair’s gaze was fixed on Nina’s face. She froze on the spot.
’Did he hear all of that?’
They stared at each other in silence for a few seconds. Aiden’s gaze shifted downward, landing on her foot. "Was the injury yesterday fake, too?"
