He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 139: The Maniac is Online Again
Theodore Grant met with Natalie Morgan before returning to Riverden.
He remained silent, simply watching her, watching how her eyes refused to meet his.
She had always been quiet.
And when she was with Theodore Grant, she had even less desire to speak.
The two of them sat in silence for nearly an hour.
Her lips finally parted as she asked him, her voice hesitant and uneasy, "When are you going back to Riverden?"
"Tomorrow."
"Okay." She had no objection.
She had already taken care of everything in Fenchest.
She would bring the baby back with him, but she didn’t know if he would accept the child.
If he was just like Felix Finch, she couldn’t bear to imagine what kind of future awaited her child.
She mustered her courage and asked cautiously, "Can I bring the baby? You don’t have to worry, I won’t need you to cover his living expenses."
A complex emotion flickered in his eyes as he looked at her. He let out a soft scoff. "I’m not so despicable as to separate a mother and her son."
’In truth, he had been thinking a lot lately.’
’What was the point of threatening her to make her come back to him?’
’He didn’t want her back like this, unwilling and resentful.’
’It would only plunge them back into their old predicament, repeating the endless cycle of pain and struggle.’
’Deep down, she still hadn’t let go of their past.’
’He really didn’t want to go down that same disastrous road with her again.’
’He would rather let her go.’
"Natalie Morgan." He had never looked so serious as he stared into her cold, detached eyes. "You don’t have to come back to Riverden with me. Just... consider it my one good deed."
"Why?" ’This wasn’t Theodore Grant’s style.’
’At least, the Theodore Grant she remembered wasn’t this forgiving.’
"It’s boring."
’She didn’t understand what Theodore Grant considered ’boring.’’
’Did he not want to bully her anymore? To torment her? Or had he just grown tired of this game and wanted to settle down and start a new relationship?’
A sudden sense of relief washed over her. "If you think it’s boring, Mr. Grant, I respect your decision."
’Mr. Grant?’
’She was an expert at creating distance between them.’
’He hated how she deliberately kept him at arm’s length.’
Her words grated on him. His face fell, and his expression twisted into a mocking sneer. "In that case, you’re coming back to Riverden with me. I take back what I said. I think this will be very interesting indeed."
"But you just said..."
"I changed my mind." He raised an eyebrow.
Natalie was speechless.
’So The Maniac was back.’
’And here she thought he had changed.’
’Going back on his word again. A leopard can’t change its spots.’
Natalie had no other choice.
She took Momo and followed Theodore Grant back to Riverden.
It was the same, familiar Grant Residence.
She was no stranger to this place, and a deep-seated repulsion filled her heart.
This place held too many memories she couldn’t bear to revisit.
Every brick and tile seemed to whisper of that heartbreaking past.
Her every step was a tread upon sharp, cold shards of memory that pierced her heart.
Natalie took a deep breath, forcing the unpleasant memories down.
The little one seemed timid in this strange new home. He clung tightly to Natalie’s neck, his small face a mask of confusion and unease. "Mommy, where... where are we?"
Natalie gently stroked his head, her voice soft. "Mommy found a new job. We’re going to live here together from now on, okay?"
The little one nodded obediently, pressing close to Natalie. "Poor Mommy."
Natalie understood he was saying she was having a hard time, and a warmth flooded her heart. "Mommy’s not having a hard time. As long as I’m with my Momo, it’s all worth it."
Carrying Momo, Natalie went to the room the staff had prepared for him.
It was a north-facing guest room, not particularly large, but not too small either.
The room used to be for storage.
It had been swept clean and now had a cozy feel.
"Momo, you play here like a good boy. Mommy has to go to work, but I’ll come back and spend time with you later." She gazed gently at her adorable son, always feeling she owed him so much. "Another day, Mommy will find you a new preschool, okay?"
"Okay," he replied, his voice small.
The little guy was always so well-behaved.
After settling him in, Natalie changed into a staff uniform and went to work.
When Theodore Grant got back, she was on her knees, diligently scrubbing the floor.
He didn’t know where the burst of anger came from, but he bellowed, "Where is everybody? Are you all dead? Is there no one here to clean?"
A member of the staff came running in, flustered.
They quickly took the rag from Natalie’s hand.
Natalie rose from the floor, confused. "Did I do something wrong?"
"Natalie Morgan, did I bring you here to clean?" he sneered. "You’re certainly good at finding things to do." He kicked off his leather shoes.
She immediately bent down, put his shoes away neatly, and placed a pair of slippers by his feet. "Sir, please change."
Theodore was speechless.
He shot out a hand, grabbed her wrist, and with a single tug, threw her onto the sofa.
Her beautiful eyes trembled.
’She still couldn’t understand why Theodore Grant was so angry.’
"Did I bring you back to Riverden to be a servant?" Annoyed, he kicked the slippers at his feet. "Since you’re so eager to please, you can put that energy into serving me in bed later."
He didn’t actually do anything to her.
After spitting out a few ugly words, he went upstairs.
Just as he rounded the corner of the landing, he saw the little boy, clutching an Ultraman figure, staring at him.
"What are you looking at?" he snapped, annoyed.
The little boy seemed frightened by him and took two steps back. "Mister... you’re scary."
"This is scary?"
A playful impulse struck Theodore Grant. He made a dinosaur face at the little boy, who promptly burst into tears with a loud WAH! 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The boy’s crying wouldn’t have been a big deal, but the sound brought his mother running up from downstairs.
"Momo!" She quickly swept the crying child into her arms. "What’s wrong? Why are you crying? Tell Mommy."
The little boy pointed at Theodore Grant. "Mister... he’s... scary."
Just as Theodore was about to explain, Natalie swept Momo into her arms and returned to their room.
She shot him a single, venomous glare as she left.
He rubbed his nose.
’Is she angry?’
’Well, it’s her own kid’s fault for being such a scaredy-cat.’
’A kid that timid is bound to get bullied when he’s older.’
After Natalie lulled Momo to sleep, she finally stepped out of the room.
Theodore Grant was leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed, giving Natalie a sidelong glance as she emerged.
His voice was laced with mockery. "That kid of yours is way too timid. He’ll get eaten alive once he starts school, crying to his mommy after getting bullied."
Natalie’s brow furrowed at his words, and her eyes flashed with a warning. "You’d better stay away from my son. Don’t frighten him."
"How did I scare him? I was just telling it like it is. How is a boy that timid supposed to make it in the world?" Theodore raised an eyebrow, smiling dismissively.
"He’s my child, and I’ll be the one to teach him. I don’t need you lecturing me," Natalie’s tone was icy with annoyance.
He shrugged, a contemptuous smirk on his face. "Fine. Your precious son. I couldn’t be bothered. It’s not like he’s my kid, so why the hell should I care?"
