Chapter 80: Chapter 80: Devotion

Admiral Clan’s arrangements were quicker than Lu Xiao had imagined. The very next day at noon, just as Lu Xiao was leaving the consultation room after finishing a treatment, she received a voice call from Admiral Clan. Only then did she realize he even had her number.

The call connected, and a mature, husky male voice came through. "Are you busy? I hope I’m not disturbing you. I’ve already booked a restaurant for this evening. Fred will go over early to wait for you."

She hadn’t expected Admiral Clan to worry about disturbing her. If not for the latter half of his sentence, she might have actually considered him a very courteous man.

But as it was, he was both polite and completely overbearing.

"Father, I think I should make my position clear. I have no intention of adding another person to my family. I appreciate your kind intentions, but I’m afraid the outcome won’t be what you hope for. I hope you can understand."

Admiral Clan was silent for a long moment. "Why would you think that way?"

Admiral Clan clearly couldn’t understand. As a female, why would Lu Xiao say something like that?

In his experience, no female ever spent her entire life with just one male.

Even the most emotionally devoted females had at least two or three male partners in their homes.

Instead of answering, Lu Xiao posed a question of her own. "Father, do you enjoy the kind of life Mother leads, with a house full of people?"

Admiral Clan’s heart jolted. ’Does that question even need an answer? There isn’t a single male who would like that.’

"Are you doing this for Ares?"

"It’s for myself. I don’t like coming home only to deal with relationship politics and calm down rivalries and jealousy between males. I just want to live a quiet and peaceful life. Having one considerate partner by my side is just right. I should have said this last night, but Ares is sensitive and insecure. He was worried I would regret promoting him to main husband, so he stopped me. The truth is, I have no intention of looking for other males. I hope you can understand, Father."

Admiral Clan listened to the young female’s resolute words. Although he was reluctant to admit it, he was truly shaken. "You’ve changed a lot."

Lu Xiao was somewhat surprised to hear those words. ’It seems Admiral Clan knew her former self a little, after all.’

"Father, about the meeting tonight... is it..."

Before Lu Xiao could get the word "canceled" out, Admiral Clan’s voice cut in. "Go and meet him. There’s no harm in getting to know Vice Admiral Fred. As for the outcome, that’s for you to decide."

Since Admiral Clan had put it that way, Lu Xiao couldn’t say anything more. ’Fine, I’ll go meet him,’ she thought. ’As long as Admiral Clan doesn’t try to force me and Vice Admiral Fred together, it should be okay.’

After ending the call with Admiral Clan, Lu Xiao sent a message to Ares: "I have to meet with Vice Admiral Fred tonight. You’re coming with me."

’If she had to meet Fred alone, she wouldn’t even know what to say. Ares and he were both military men; surely they would have something to talk about.’

With that thought, Lu Xiao decided it was a good plan.

Back in her office, Teacher Ai Li sidled up to her. "What’s all this, dear? Did your family arrange a suitable candidate for main husband for you?"

"Teacher Ai Li, it’s very impolite to eavesdrop, you know."

Teacher Sherry chuckled lightly. "Well, you’d have to speak a little softer for that. Did you really think we needed to eavesdrop?"

Lu Xiao froze for a second at her words, then belatedly realized something. "Was I that loud?"

Teacher Ai Li shattered her illusion. "Very loud. It’s a good thing there aren’t many people over here, or everyone would have heard our Xiao Xiao’s grand declaration about not finding other males and spending her life with just her side husband!"

Lu Xiao couldn’t help but cover her face. "Ah, just stop!"

’She had been so focused on how to convince Admiral Clan not to set her up with anyone that she’d completely forgotten other people might overhear.’

But it wasn’t a big deal. It was just that Teacher Ai Li’s sudden teasing made her a little embarrassed.

The four teachers watched the suddenly shy young female, finding it utterly amusing. Their eyes filled with laughter and fondness. It was just that Lu Xiao was normally so tough, it seemed like there was nothing she couldn’t accomplish.

To see her suddenly like this made her seem very cute and genuine.

As for the words Lu Xiao had said, they weren’t surprised at all, because that was how Lu Xiao had always acted.

They had all been guests at Lu Xiao’s home and had seen with their own eyes how she treated her husband.

So, if Lu Xiao said it, she could definitely do it.

She wasn’t like those hypocritical females who talked about being faithful while secretly wishing they had a hundred males at home.

If you asked them, they’d say they were faithful to each and every one, determined to give them all a warm home.

Words without action are just bullshit.

In the Empire, no female deserved to use the word "faithful."

But perhaps Lu Xiao could do it, because there was an innate toughness about her.

It was as if once she said something, there was nothing she couldn’t accomplish.

Lu Xiao just gave people the feeling that she was incredibly reliable.

"I bet Ares would be over the moon if he knew." For a male to experience that in his lifetime made it all worthwhile.

Speaking of Ares, he had just arrived at the military district when he noticed more eyes on him than usual today.

When he reached his office door, he found his adjutant wearing a fawning expression and handing him a cup. "Good morning, Major General Ares. I personally brewed some tea for you."

Ares took it, then pointed to the others nearby who were pretending to work but were actually straining to listen. "What did you tell them?"

Adjutant Kevin put on an innocent face. "I didn’t say much. I just shared some of the cookies Lu Xiao made with them."

The moment he finished speaking, a bolder man spoke up. "Um, Major General Ares, can your wife really cook?"

Meeting the speaker’s expectant gaze, Ares shot his adjutant a look that said, "That’s enough." "If you’re all that idle, go run some laps!"

With that one sentence, everyone instantly fell into line.

Once Ares was back in his office, the group immediately surrounded Kevin again. "Tell us more! Come on, tell us more!"

"Yeah, just tell us what you know! Is the Major General’s wife’s cooking really that good?"

"How’s the Major General’s relationship with his wife? Hurry up and tell us, the suspense is killing me!"

...

Back in his office, Ares took off his jacket and hung it on the coat rack. As he rolled up his sleeves to deal with the documents on his desk, he received a message from Lu Xiao. It was the custom ringtone he had set just for her.

After reading the message, the corners of Ares’s mouth lifted slightly. Even though he was going to meet Vice Admiral Fred, for some reason, thinking about what Lu Xiao had said to him yesterday, he didn’t feel any unease. Instead, he felt a sense of security.

"Okay. I’ll pick you up after work, and we’ll go together."

Lu Xiao breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Ares’s reply. She had been genuinely afraid that he would start talking about whether it was "appropriate" or not again.

’Thank goodness he was being sensible for once.’
