Hearts System: 1000 Ways to Tell CEO I Love You-Chapter 22: A Strong Backing
"I think you should wait for another incident first." Luellen nervously chuckled. She looked up at Leander again. "You shouldn’t look too petty and vengeful, Mr Leander. Moreover, she didn’t commit a real crime against you.
"I’m sure Madam Henny would rather slap Ms Ross than kick her out." Luellen played with her hair and avoided Leander’s gaze again. "Not that Madam is violent..."
"You’re not that far off." Leander softly laughed. "It’s the reason I sent her to the Director of Finance instead. Allowing her to accompany me to that office will result in an assault charge I’d rather not hear about."
He picked up the same papers he held earlier. "You have been working hard. Take the time to rest before Ms Hower clocks out again. She doesn’t seem reliable. She’s an intern in the CEO’s office, but she can’t do it any justice."
Leander’s meaningful yet sharp gaze fell on Luellen’s face. "Might as well give the position to your friend. Summer Bloomfield, was it?"
Luellen froze. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. She didn’t even know what to say. The maiden shifted left and right before wheezing. "That was...! I don’t know how to keep myself out of trouble because of that one line! It was a joke! I really am not trying to seduce you, Mr Leander!"
"Didn’t I tell you not to say anything you’re not willing to discuss?" Leander snorted. "Why don’t you start with context, Mrs Wentworth?"
"Mr Leander, I’m so sorry!" Luellen ugly-cried as she tried to save herself. "That was...! Summer and I had been talking even before we got to that office. She remembered another big problem of mine... and thought that you could help me with it. I just... It was too big a personal problem. I didn’t want to bother you about it.
"Then... she said that I might be less reserved if... I end up earning more than your favor. After all, I need a strong backing." Luellen’s helpless smile turned bitter. Her eyes even darkened. "Legal problems always need strong backing."
Leander dropped his haughty expression. He even brought the papers down again. "What legal problems? A criminal case?"
Luellen shook her head. "My uncle and my father’s partner stole my entire inheritance. My father was making a lot of money and owning many assets. His business might not compare to yours, but it was already huge for someone from Halter Point. They... They made up a debt and took everything in the guise of paying it off."
She balled her fist and lifted her face. Her brows somewhat frowned as her gaze intensified. "But I know my father! I also worked as his secretary after college. He has no debt left unsettled. He paid every loan he took out. What they did... It’s not right.
"But my father’s probate attorney took their side. I saw the pain in his eyes when he told me how I couldn’t take a single penny from my inheritance." Luellen sighed. "I didn’t know what they had done, but I was powerless to fight it. For three months, I tried to make sense of everything that happened to me.
"My job here in the conglomerate pulled me back to my feet. I also owe it to my friend, Summer." Luellen sheepishly smiled, avoiding Leander’s gaze. "I don’t want to jeopardize it for an inheritance I already lost."
The maiden bowed her head. "I’m really sorry for cracking that joke, Mr Leander. I won’t make the same mistake again."
Leander only hummed and picked up his papers for the third time. "You should. Because next time you have the urge to get it back, speak to me directly. I won’t solicit marriage from you for something so simple."
Luellen didn’t know what Leander was trying to tell her. However, if she stayed quiet, maybe both of them would forget about it.
"Mr Leander, may I head back outside again? My bag is still with Madam Henny." Luellen slowly got up in case Leander stopped her. However, he only hummed in acknowledgment. She only left the inner office to rest her mind.
"Ms Piper, call Gala to the door," Leander suddenly spoke.
However, since the door was already open, his voice reached the outer office. Galaxy didn’t spare a second in getting up. She even bumped into Luellen, who was leaving. It was good that Luellen didn’t fall over from the strength of that woman’s hips.
Galaxy stepped inside the office, her body halfway inside. "Leander, what do you need from me? Did that girl mess up again?"
"Tell Ms Hower she can leave for today. You should also get going. Didn’t you say you’re meeting with your father tonight?" Leander didn’t even look up from the papers he was supposed to sign hours ago.
"...oh... yeah, sure... Goodbye, Leander..." Galaxy softly huffed. She glanced at the maiden on the couch, but her heavy gaze soon landed on Shirley. She closed the door first before speaking with a sting in her words. "Shirley, we can go home now. Leave that to the other person."
Shirley grew frustrated. However, she still gathered her stuff. "It’s too early...! My friends are not even out of their offices yet...!"
She then glared at Luellen, who was the designated ’other person’. "I was going to fix my mistakes later. Don’t think that I’ll leave it in. I’m only going home because... Doesn’t matter. Remember that."
Luellen frowned lightly. She just watched the two beautiful women leave the office. Since Houston was there, she turned to him. "Should I take over now?"
"Not yet, please." Madam Henny, who had returned while Luellen was in the inner office, chuckled. She handed a few folders to Luellen. "Deliver these to Director Lawford’s office. He doesn’t like digital signatures or receiving copies. You might have to give these back to them."
"Oh, okay." Luellen received the folders and the small note for the office’s address in their building. Thankfully, it was on the other wing of the fifteenth floor.
The maiden left the office with a spring in her steps. She had the excuse to see the dubbed garden on her way back.
...
Shirley’s document was fairly better than her first work. Luellen didn’t have to spend more than an hour finishing and polishing it. She just felt strange since Shirley’s name was on it. It didn’t matter; it was Shirley’s document in the first place. She would just remember all the times she would have to shadow-help that person.
Luellen was allowed to leave as soon as the clocks hit five. It seemed that the real secretaries had a meeting with the CEO. The interns would have to leave. Galaxy was not there only because she told Leander she had places to be.
That was why Luellen experienced the traffic in the elevator lobby. A lot of other employees crowded around to ride the elevators heading to the fifteenth floor.
"Maybe I should just take the stairs..."
