The water salamander is quite large, over a meter and a half in length. If Qi Tian hadn’t received the Storage Bag, eating it would have been the only way he could have disposed of it.
Qi Tian pulled the Storage Bag from his clothes, stored the water salamander inside, then tucked the bag back into his attire. Without the ability to protect the bag at the moment, he wanted to minimize its exposure.
Qi Tian walked around the pond but found no other water salamanders. He noticed that the Spirit Qi in the water seemed densest near the waterfall. Glancing up at the waterfall, Qi Tian wondered if tracing its course upstream might lead him to the source of the Spirit Qi.
Using the gourd he had just prepared, Qi Tian filled it halfway with water, then strapped it and a simple pack to his back before setting off to climb the mountain.
The waterfall wasn’t wide or tall. Climbing just twenty meters up, Qi Tian found its source — a small river, less than five meters wide. Tasting the river water, he found it contained noticeably more Spirit Qi than the water in his gourd had.
This invigorated Qi Tian; his guess had been right. Following the river upstream, the concentration of Spirit Qi indeed grew higher. Qi Tian didn’t waste time dilly-dallying: he pressed on, tasting the river water every hundred meters or so to track the changes in Spirit Qi. The concentration consistently seemed to increase along the river.
The small river was long; Qi Tian had been following it uphill for about half an hour when he came upon a branching. After some exploration upstream of both tributaries, he found that one held no Spirit Qi at all; all the Spirit Qi was coming from the other tributary.
Qi Tian continued up this tributary for another ten minutes or so when he came upon a large mountain terrain. The river seemed to disappear into the side of the mountain. At the base of the mountain was an opening about two meters wide. The river was about five or six centimeters from the entrance of the cave, and water flowed out slowly from it. Just as Qi Tian was about to crouch down and check the Spirit Qi in the water here, he noticed several dark shadows moving in the water. Looking at their shapes, they were unmistakably water salamanders.
These water salamanders were obviously larger than the one he had caught in the pond. From a distance, Qi Tian gauged them to be of Qi Cultivation stage 4 to Qi Cultivation 6th Level.
Qi Tian hoped they were just passing through and would be gone after a while of swimming near the cave entrance. He hid in the darkness and waited, but even after half an hour, the salamanders were still patrolling near the entrance, acting just like the shrimp soldiers and crab generals guarding the Crystal Palace, refusing to leave.
Qi Tian realized that if he wanted to follow the river upstream to the source of the Spirit Qi, he needed to get past these monstrous water salamanders. One or even two wouldn’t have phased him, but there were five. If they decided to attack together, and Qi Tian couldn’t cope with them quickly, he might find himself surrounded and in real trouble by then.
After considering his options, Qi Tian quickly came up with a plan. He decided to lure the water salamanders onto the shore where their fighting strength would be greatly reduced and their speed wouldn’t match up to when they were in the water. With this plan, he felt confident that he could eliminate them.
To lure them ashore, Qi Tian decided to use an alchemical pill. He took out a Middle-grade Essence Qi pill and threw it onto the shore. This pill was very useful for him, a cultivator in the Qi Cultivation period, and he expected that the water salamanders, being the monsters in the Qi Cultivation period, might also require it.

Initially, the water salamanders did not react, so Qi Tian patiently waited. He was a patient man; he felt confident that he could outwait the Qi Cultivation stage water salamanders.
After more than an hour, it was almost noon, when finally a water salamander crawled ashore. It hastily rushed to the Essence Qi Pill, gulping it down in a single swallow, then turned and bolted back into the river.
Qi Tian was taken aback; the speed of the water salamander on the shore was much faster than he had anticipated. In comparison to their earthly counterparts, they were different by a factor of hundreds, if not more.
For the moment, Qi Tian couldn’t come up with a better plan, so he decided to continue using the Essence Qi pills to lure the water salamanders ashore. However, this time he had learnt his lesson and tied the pill to a transparent long line before throwing it back onto the shore.
It took less than ten minutes this time for a water salamander, unable to resist the allure of the pill fragrance, to climb out of the river and dash towards the Essence Qi pill.
Immediately, Qi Tian jerked the long line, pulling the Essence Qi pill about a meter in his direction.
The salamander, realizing that its pill was getting away, quickly set off in pursuit. Qi Tian noted that it could reach a speed of around ten meters per second, which was considerably fast.
Qi Tian did not dare to slack off, constantly reeling back the line in his hand. The distance between him and the water salamander was getting closer and closer.
The salamander detected the scent of a foreign creature. It let out several cries akin to a baby’s wailing, then pounced in the direction of Qi Tian, even disregarding the Middle-grade Essence Qi Pill. The other salamanders that had been patrolling the river all crawled onto the shore upon hearing their companion’s call, and charged towards Qi Tian.
The hairs on the back of Qi Tian’s neck stood up. He roared and lunged at the water salamander he had lured onto the shore.
The Fifth Level Qi Cultivation salamander lashed its tail, whipping it towards Qi Tian.
This massive tail, over 1.5 meters long, was like a steel whip cutting through the air, whistling as it moved. Qi Tian had no doubt that even a brick wall wouldn’t withstand a strike from the salamander’s tail.
A flash of brilliance appeared in Qi Tian’s eyes. He figured that the best way to prevent the other salamanders from surrounding him was to resolve the fight swiftly. Channeling his True Essence into his hands, he reached out and caught the whipping tail of the salamander.
When the salamander’s tail hit Qi Tian’s hand, the tail was slippery and possessed a tremendous amount of strength. Had Qi Tian not trained with the Tiger Golden Body Skills, this blow might have caused him serious injuries.
Qi Tian ignored the stinging pain in his hands and grabbed the tail once more. The salamander’s tail was incredibly slippery, and only after exerting all his energy did Qi Tian manage to grip the tail before it could slip out of his grasp. Despite this, Qi Tian could feel the tail struggling to escape from his grip.
Almost immediately, Qi Tian changed his gripping hand into a claw and channeled his True Essence into his fingertips, pinching the salamander’s tail hard. His fingernails pierced through the salamander’s slippery but thick skin, plunging into its flesh.
Having grabbed the salamander, Qi Tian swung it upwards. He then released his grip, sending the hundred pound salamander flying. The creature’s head collided with the mountainside, killing it instantly.
Upon seeing their companion slain by Qi Tian, the remaining salamanders on the shore opened their mouths. They began shooting water arrows, with the Sixth Level Qi Cultivation salamander in the lead, spouting three water arrows at once.
Qi Tian turned and ran as fast as he could, but his speed was no match for the water arrows. They hit him several times, soaking him. However, Qi Tian was wearing a middle-grade Spirit Military armor of human grade, which took the brunt of the arrows’ power and left him unharmed save for the drenching. The remaining arrows plunged into the ground, drilling deep holes. Given their force, Qi Tian was sure that they could pierce through one millimeter thick steel plates.
The water salamanders chased after Qi Tian for about a hundred meters, then, unable to catch him, they turned back towards the river.
Once the salamanders had returned to the river, Qi Tian collected the corpse of the salamander he had killed into his Storage Bag. He then returned to the riverbank and, mimicking the earlier tactics, tied another Middle-grade Essence Qi Pill to the line and threw it in.
These salamanders were not very smart. They initially resisted, but after more than two hours, they forgot their lesson. One of the salamanders climbed up and swallowed the Middle-grade Essence Qi Pill…
In this way, Qi Tian spent over three hours killing all the salamanders that had been guarding the hole in the river. All five salamanders became his spoils of war.
Qi Tian returned to the hole, looking left and right in the river, but there were no salamanders in sight. That didn’t mean there were no salamanders in the river though. So Qi Tian tied a stone to the line, put another Middle-grade Essence Qi Pill on it and threw it into the hole.
After a while, a few more salamanders emerged.
Qi Tian felt fortunate that he didn’t jump into the water. Then, using the Middle-grade Essence Qi Pill as bait, he killed off these salamanders as well.
For three days, Qi Tian kept using Middle-grade Essence Qi Pills to lure and catch salamanders at the same spot. At times, he had to put as many as five pills on the line to attract salamanders hiding further away. Still unsatisfied, he waited for another whole day. When no salamanders turned up, he finally felt reassured that it was essentially safe here.
In these few days, Qi Tian had used almost fifty Middle-grade Essence Qi Pills, spending about 5000 taels – extravagance by any measure. However, the yield was impressive too. Including the salamander from the pool, he had caught more than thirty, creating quite a spectacle in his Storage Bag.
