Chapter 39: The Black Horseman

This voice—I recognize it. I never thought it would be him of all people.

"You’re him. You’re Famine of the Four Horsemen."

"So you have heard of me. But I don’t know who you are. Care to enlighten me?"

"Uh... it’s me, Sin."

"Obviously, I know who you are. I meant, what are you? That insufferable stench you give off is really irritating. At first, I thought I’d just ignore it, but then you had to start meddling in my business along with that angel whom you just killed. What’s the story behind that anyway?"

"Believe me, when I heard you were here, I wanted nothing to do with you. I didn’t know you were connected to that wendigo until after I killed it. Frankly, I don’t care what you do to the students at school. It was never my intention to get involved."

"But still, you did get involved, which means you have to go. I’m going to ask you again: What are you, Sin Tenshi?"

"I’m... a hellhound."

"A hellhound? You mean Lucifer’s pet dogs. I thought most of them were killed off by Michael and the last one died along with its master during the war. How are you here?"

"I—"

"Never mind! I don’t really care anyway."

Just then, time began to warp back to normal, and we were brought back to the original timeline, where all the students were competing in the capture-the-flag special exercise. The world that had been covered in darkness and ice no longer existed, and we returned to a time where the sun reigned supreme.

With the light of the sun now back, I gazed upon Famine’s face—the face of the man I used to consider my homeroom teacher—now a threat to my life: Professor Yandri.

The heat from my astral form was so intense that the ground was turning into molten rock, but it didn’t seem to affect him. His face contained no emotion, which was contradictory to his voice, which oozed with threat in every sentence he spoke.

There was no way out of this situation. I had to fight back. The students on this mountain be damned; it didn’t matter if they were burnt to a crisp as long as I could get away from here. The only reason I wouldn’t destroy everything right now is because of Nina. I needed to put her safety first, even before my own.

"You have a wild look in your eye. Are you thinking something stupid?"

I’ll blow this place up before he can even react. I condensed the energy within myself, preparing for a powerful blast. The moment I was about to release it, the world around me went black and for the first time in a long while, I felt cold.

My mind felt trapped in a void, and all I could hear was his voice speaking, as I drift around a place devoid of any light or warmth.

"What is this?! Something is very wrong with you, Sin Tenshi. Hahaha. How did this even happen? You are quite the specimen. Now that I think about it, they did say hellhounds were created from that. I just couldn’t believe it, that madman Lucifer really—you’re special. I think I’ll..."

I couldn’t grasp anything he was saying, and slowly, I began to drift off as his voice faded completely.

I opened my eyes to the sound of a beeping machine beside my bed in an unfamiliar room. A nearly unbearable pain swirled in my head. Staggering to my feet, I hopped out of bed to take a look around. Just then, the door swung open, and a girl wearing my school’s uniform stood in the doorway. My vision was a total blur, so it took a moment for my eyes to adjust.

"Sarah?" I mumbled, my voice so low it felt like a whisper.

"O-You’re awake! Thank goodness!" She rushed to my side and embraced me in a hug.

"Where am I?"

"You’re in the hospital. The doctors said you had a concussion. You were out for nearly four days."

"What? That can’t be right."

"It’s the truth. You don’t have to worry; Professor Yandri told us everything."

Professor Yandri—that’s right, I remember now. He’s Famine.

"He said you got into an altercation with the leaders of Class B and C, and that’s how you got hurt. You know, you’re really amazing; you managed to fight off two class leaders all by yourself. Our classmates were fighting to protect you while you were in the hospital."

"Fighting?"

"Yeah! The other leaders claimed you attacked them with the intent to severely injure them and that they didn’t know how you got your injuries. Our class got into a pretty heated argument with them over it, and it turned into a brawl. Jeffrey was so pissed off about what they said that he marched into their classroom with some other students and started wrecking the place! Hahaha... you’ve really turned into our class hero. "

"That’s surprising. I never thought Jeffrey would stand up for me."

"Katherine got released, but Julius is still here; they say his injuries are much more severe. You must have done a number on him, huh? Oh, You see that stack of flowers over there? They’re a gift from Maimai. She came here every day to visit you."

"Maimai? You mean the girl from the bus? Why would she go through all that trouble?"

"Huh... Don’t be dense. Why else would a girl be so attentive to a guy? She basically marked you as her property ever since that whole thing with Rizor."

"Her what? I don’t get what you’re talking about."

"It’s a thing with girls, okay? We basically have to call dibs before another girl swoops in and snatches up our prey." 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

What is she talking about? This doesn’t make any sense. Putting aside what she was saying about Maimai, why would Famine go through all that trouble to protect me? Wasn’t he planning on killing me? What’s his real motive for sparing me? One thing is for sure: I won’t be his servant. He might have been better off killing me. I need to become stronger; as I am now, I stand no chance of defeating him. And if he ever turns his attention to Nina, then...
