Chapter 371

2-in-1 chapter:

------------------

Kaelith charged straight toward Inaba Kageroza, who stiffened instantly.

Even though he had overpowered Kaelith last time, a person’s name carries weight—and thinking of Kaelith’s string of dazzling achievements made Kageroza instinctively want to retreat.

Whoosh! Whoosh!

Two Reigai captains flash-stepped in, blocking Kaelith’s path and adopting fighting stances.

But before they could mount a proper defense, Kaelith had already reached them with a smile—both fists striking out at once—

Triple Ikkotsu ×2!!

Under the force of triple compression, his strikes had reached a sublime level. Even captain-class reigai couldn’t evade them.

A deafening impact resounded. Both were heavily injured and sent flying.

The entire Thirteen Court Guard Squads erupted in cheers.

The same reigai they struggled to suppress had been crushed like paper tigers by Captain Kaelith!

Victory! A complete, overwhelming victory!

“Go, Captain Kaelith!”

“Take that bastard down, Captain Kaelith!!”

With the shouts of his comrades surging behind him, Kaelith was full of spirit—burning with righteous fury.

He surged forward.

“Ah—ahhh!! Don’t come any closer!!”

Just moments earlier, Inaba Kageroza had been posturing like a final boss. Now his face twisted in fear.

He instinctively stumbled backward, raising his arms defensively.

No matter how much power he gained, no matter how many powerful allies he gathered—at the brink of life and death, he was still, at his core, that same coward who flinched in the face of danger.

In a flash, Kaelith was in front of him, dual Zanpakutō poised to strike down—

Kageroza turned his head in panic, shutting his eyes.

But once again, the pain never came.

He slowly opened his eyes and turned his head.

Kaelith stood before him, twin blades trembling just centimeters from his body—unable to push down.

“Ughhhh... I can’t break through! I can’t break through!!”

Kaelith’s face contorted in effort as he pressed harder, shouting through gritted teeth.

Kageroza stared at the blades, dumbfounded.

Then, his mouth gradually curled into an ecstatic grin.

So it was real… it wasn’t an illusion last time.

Kaelith—this monster who could rival the Head Captain—still couldn’t surpass him in raw spiritual pressure!

He’d only released a tiny fraction of his power, and already Kaelith was helpless. What if he unleashed it deliberately?

Kageroza chuckled darkly.

“Raikū!!”

With a push of his Zanpakutō, a surge of spiritual pressure exploded outward.

“UWAHH!!”

Kaelith was instantly blasted away like a cannonball, crashing into the ground far off in the distance. A massive cloud of dust burst into the sky.

Everyone from the Thirteen Court Guard Squads stood frozen.

From the shadows, Kujō Nozomi peeked out—also stunned.

Ukitake frowned deeply.

“The enemy is this strong? Even Kaelith can’t beat him?”

Not long ago, he’d watched Kaelith’s earth-shattering duel with their teacher. The power they displayed was something even he could only look up to.

And now, this man—who seemed to come from nowhere—was suppressing Kaelith?

It was unbelievable.

Kyōraku adjusted his straw hat.

Something didn’t sit right.

He looked around and said, “Everyone, I’ll test that guy myself. Kaelith took out two reigai—he’ll be fine for now. Hold the line!”

“You got it!”

The other captains nodded. Kyōraku was the strongest among them—if anyone could help Kaelith shift the tide, it was him.

Dodging the reigai’s interference, Kyōraku flash-stepped into the sky, dual blades slashing toward Kageroza.

Seeing Kyōraku charging at him, Kageroza sneered.

Even Kaelith couldn’t defeat me. What makes you think a normal captain stands a chance?

He didn’t even bother drawing his Zanpakutō. He simply unleashed spiritual pressure straight from his body.

Kyōraku’s heart tightened.

It was that same pressure that had defeated Kaelith... I can’t block this head-on!

He flickered to the side, narrowly dodging the blast.

But as it swept past him, he couldn’t help but frown.

Was it just him… or did it feel weak? Maybe third-class spiritual pressure at best?

He remained puzzled, but Kageroza was already fuming—his attack had missed.

With a shout, he released an even wider wave of spiritual pressure.

Kyōraku crossed his swords before him, preparing to take the blast.

There was no way to plan a counterattack without gauging the enemy’s strength.

But just before the pressure struck him, a figure surged up from below and tackled him midair.

“Watch out, Senior Brother!!”

Kaelith slammed shoulder-first into Kyōraku’s chest, knocking him out of the blast’s range.

The spiritual pressure didn’t hurt Kyōraku.

But what Kaelith did certainly hurt him..

His eyes bulged, his face twisted in pain, and he nearly dropped both swords.

Kaelith steadied midair, glanced behind them at the missed spiritual pressure wave, and let out a breath of relief.

He wiped sweat from his brow and grinned brightly at Kyōraku, giving him a thumbs-up.

“Whew, that was close, Uncle Kyōraku. You almost got caught!”

Kyōraku clutched his stomach, face dark as thunder.

“Kaelith, what the hell are you doing? I could tell just now—Inaba Kageroza’s power isn’t all that special. Barely captain-class. Even if there were ten of him, it wouldn't be enough to trouble you.”

“Let alone knock you away with a wave of spiritual pressure.”

“To you, that’s like… a breeze brushing your face, right?”

Kaelith’s smile slowly faded.

He glanced down at the captains battling the reigai, then back to Kyōraku.

From an angle no one else could see, a wicked grin spread across his face.

“Senior Brother, you don’t want that old man to get away with retiring forever, right? Leaving us stuck with all the work?”

“I’d rather he didn’t… but what does that—?”

Kyōraku froze halfway through.

His eyes widened.

He stared at Kaelith.

“You mean…”

“Hehehehe…”

Kaelith just grinned.

Kyōraku thought for a second—then grinned too.

“Hehehehe…”

Their eyes met.

Everything was understood without another word.

On the ground, the members of the Gotei 13 were locked in fierce battle with the Reigai.

From time to time, they glanced upward, watching the battle in the sky.

There, Kaelith and Kyōraku Shunsui seemed to have reached some kind of tactical agreement—without hesitation, the two lunged together toward Inaba Kageroza.

If those two joined forces, they would surely win!

Excitement lit up the faces of the Gotei 13 below.

And then—they watched in disbelief as, just as the two reached Inaba, both suddenly let out pained screams and were blasted backward at even greater speed than before!

Boom! Boom!!

They crashed into the ground nearby, kicking up twin clouds of smoke and debris.

At that moment, the Gotei 13 began to panic.

If it had only been Kaelith doing something like that, maybe he was just goofing off—but now Kyōraku Shunsui had reacted the exact same way…

Could it be that Inaba Kageroza really had become overwhelmingly powerful?

What were they supposed to do now?!

Among the Reigai, even some of the captains looked confused.

Was Inaba… really that strong?

Before anyone could fully process it, Kaelith and Shunsui rolled over and leapt back to their feet.

“Everyone! This guy’s no joke—retreat!” Kaelith shouted.

Retreat? To where?

Everyone looked at each other.

They were already at the First Division barracks—if they retreated any farther, where could they go?

To Rukongai?

Wouldn’t that just make them fugitives?

As they hesitated, Shunsui spoke:

“Everyone, head to the World of the Living! Once we’re there, we’ll figure something out!”

What?!

Now they were truly stunned.

Hirako Shinji was the first to shout in anger, “Are you kidding me?!”

“Captain Kyōraku, saying something like that—how can you still call yourself a member of the Gotei 13?!”

Ukitake also looked stunned.

“Shunsui, how could you… how could you say such a thing?”

The others were about to chime in when Kaelith spoke first:

“Before our teacher passed… before he left, he said I was to act as First Division Commander in his stead!”

“Right now, Inaba’s power is overwhelming—we cannot defeat him. We must retreat to the World of the Living first!”

“This isn’t retreat—it’s a strategic redeployment!”

“Don’t worry. Even if the Reigai are modified souls, their essence as defenders of Seireitei won’t change. Seireitei will be fine in their hands!”

Just as Kaelith finished speaking, Unohana stepped forward:

“Understood. I will follow Captain Kaelith’s command.”

Komamura furrowed his brow, thinking it through for several seconds.

Though Kaelith often acted on impulse, Vice-Captain Sōsuke was reliable.

Something of this scale—Kaelith had definitely discussed it with Sōsuke beforehand.

His own brain wasn’t as sharp as Sōsuke’s, so there was no point in arguing.

After some thought, he also nodded.

“I agree as well.”

As more captains voiced their support, Kaelith nodded in satisfaction.

He drew his Zanpakutō and stabbed it into the air, opening the Dangai Gate.

*Old Man Yamamoto, you were too naïve.*

You bailed, leaving me to clean up your mess?

Fine. Since you left the Gotei 13 to me, I’ll take everyone and walk out together—hand Seireitei to Inaba Kageroza.

Let’s see how you deal with that.

Grinning, he stepped toward the gate—

—but before he could enter, a hairy leg flew out from the portal—

“You little bastard!!!!”

“Gwah!!”

In front of everyone’s stunned eyes, Yamamoto Genryūsai burst forth from the portal and kicked Kaelith straight in the face, sending him flying.

The two tumbled out of the Dangai, grappling and rolling along the ground for over a kilometer, stirring up clouds of dust along the way.

For a moment, even the Reigai stood frozen, expressions frozen mid-battle.

“Was that… Captain-Commander Yamamoto just now?”

“He’s alive?”

“…?”

“Cough—what I mean is, the Captain-Commander’s back! That’s great!”

“…”

“You damn brat! Utter disgrace! You’ve infuriated this old man to no end!!”

In the middle of the rubble, Yamamoto gritted his teeth, glaring at his wayward student as if he could kill him with just a look.

It was bad enough that he’d let the First Division barracks become like this—but now he wanted to flee with the whole Gotei 13 and hand Seireitei over to the enemy?

He was going to slice this brat up and grill him over a fire!!

But Kaelith, seeing his teacher again, simply laughed heartily.

“Ah, Master—you’re back? Perfect timing! I’ve saved a whole pile of work for you!”

“Pile of work?! Handle what work?! Didn’t you just blow it all up?!”

Yamamoto fumed.

Just moments ago, Kaelith’s battle with the Reigai Sasakibe had blown up the entire office—all his files and records turned to ash.

The paperwork was a minor loss. What hurt most was that his treasured calligraphy and rare texts were all gone too!

He’d nearly torn open space and leapt out of the Dangai in rage when it happened.

But he had held back—figuring that if Kaelith managed to eliminate Inaba Kageroza, it’d be a good time to let him take over officially.

Who could’ve guessed that this little bastard would pull something like this instead?

Retreating from an opponent weaker than his pinky toe?

As Yamamoto seethed, Kaelith spread his hands.

From within the shadow hovering in his palm, several documents and scrolls fell out.

“Relax, Master. Before the fight began, I transferred everything from your office. All the records are here—plenty to keep you busy!”

Yamamoto blinked, momentarily speechless.

*Damn it. He had everything planned.*

Now he was torn—should he feel gratified that this kid had calculated so thoroughly, or angry at being played so perfectly?

While he wrestled with this dilemma, Inaba Kageroza spoke from above:

“Captain-Commander Yamamoto… I didn’t expect that you’d been hiding in the Dangai, lying in wait for me.”

“But sadly, your clever plan was undone—by your own incompetent disciple.”

“Still, you need not be too upset… because now, I am invincible.”

“Even if you had succeeded in ambushing me, nothing would’ve changed!”

“This pitiful Soul Society… will soon be conquered by me—and then, destroyed!!”

Kaelith blinked.

Wait, his goal really was the destruction of Soul Society?

He’d just been joking earlier, throwing that idea out randomly—and this guy actually matched it?

Far above, Yamamoto looked coldly toward Inaba.

“Such noise.”

Then turned toward Kaelith.

“Boy. Go take care of him.”

“Yessir!”

Kaelith snapped a crisp salute.

Then spun around and launched into the air, speeding toward Inaba like a bullet.

In the blink of an eye, he closed the thousand-meter gap.

Arms wide, fists clenched.

Seeing Kaelith charging in, Inaba sneered.

“Forgot the pain from earlier? Allow me to remind you!!”

He stretched out a hand and unleashed a wave of spiritual pressure.

But—the image he expected never came.

Kaelith wasn’t blasted backward in agony.

The spiritual pressure wave struck him—and instantly shattered against the dense spiritual pressure swirling around Kaelith’s body.

Before Inaba could even register what had just happened, a fist flew into his field of view—filling everything.
