The team regrouped at the base of the spiral staircase, their eyes locked on the ominous green glow that illuminated the pit below. The translucent creatures had been relentless, their movements unnatural and their forms ethereal, as though they weren't fully part of this world. Bulwark's heavy gunfire echoed through the chamber, keeping the advancing enemies at bay.

"We can't hold this position forever," Rook said, his tone commanding. "Shadow, Ghost, keep moving upward. Viper, stay close to me. Bulwark, give us cover until we're halfway up, then follow."

Shadow's boots clanged against the rusted metal of the spiral staircase as she ascended. Ghost followed silently, his suppressed pistol ready. Every creak of the staircase made the team wary of collapse, but the urgency of their mission pushed them forward.

The air grew colder and heavier with each step, as though the weight of centuries pressed down on them. The glowing green symbols etched into the walls pulsed faintly, their light casting eerie, shifting shadows.

Shadow reached the halfway point and paused to survey the chamber. "Still clear up here," she called down.

But below, the battle raged. Bulwark grunted as he unleashed another explosive round, the recoil sending a shockwave through his arms. "These things don't quit!" he shouted, glancing at Rook.

"We're not here to kill them all," Rook snapped. "We're here to survive. Move!"

Viper darted up the staircase with Rook close behind, her blade at the ready for any sudden ambushes. The creatures, though slowed by Bulwark's firepower, began adapting. They moved with unnatural agility, climbing the walls and leaping toward the staircase.

"Incoming from the sides!" Ghost warned, firing at one of the creatures mid-leap. The bullet struck true, sending the creature plummeting into the glowing pit below.

Shadow reached the top of the staircase and found the sealed doorway. It was massive, carved from black stone and covered in intricate runes that seemed to shift as she looked at them. "The door's here, but it's locked," she reported, studying the runes.

Rook's voice came through the comms. "Figure it out. We're running out of time."

Shadow traced the glowing runes with her fingers, her mind racing. "It's a puzzle," she muttered. "The symbols match the ones on the walls. I need to align them…" Read new chapters at novelbuddy

Below, the creatures were growing more aggressive. One managed to grab the edge of the staircase, its clawed hand scraping against the metal as it tried to pull itself up. Viper moved swiftly, her blade slicing through its arm, sending it falling back into the pit.

"Shadow, we need that door open now!" Rook shouted, firing into the growing horde.

"I'm working on it!" Shadow snapped, her fingers deftly manipulating the runes. Finally, with a low rumble, the door began to shift, sliding open to reveal a blinding white light.

"Go, go, go!" Rook commanded.

The team raced through the doorway, the creatures screaming in frustration as the massive stone door slammed shut behind them.

Breathing heavily, they found themselves in a new chamber—silent, pristine, and filled with ancient machinery.

"This isn't over," Rook said grimly. "It's just the beginning."
