Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 584: Story : The Silent Sands
The ZETU team stood on the edge of a vast desert plain, its eerie silence broken only by the dry whisper of wind across the dunes. Ahead, an ancient, crumbling fortress loomed like a mirage in the moonlight. Intelligence suggested it was the site of recent attacks by reanimated corpses that moved like shadows across the sand. Survivors from nearby villages spoke of skeletal figures emerging under the cover of night, dragging people into the depths of the fortress.
"Fortress of death," Jenna "Blaze" Hart muttered, adjusting her flamethrower.
"Let's focus," Captain Marcus "Iron Will" Kane replied, gripping his shotgun. "Eyes open, team. This place reeks of a trap."
Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett scanned the dunes with her sniper rifle. "Movement at three o'clock," she whispered. Her scope revealed three skeletal figures advancing silently, their frames barely human. Their movements were fluid, blending unnervingly with the desert's natural shifting.
"Permission to engage?" Riley asked.
Marcus nodded. "Take them out."
Her shot cracked through the night, dropping the lead creature instantly. But instead of falling, the other two suddenly split apart, their forms dissolving into clouds of sand. Moments later, the grains swirled together, reforming behind the team.
"They're not just zombies!" Ethan "Brain" O'Connor shouted, his tablet lighting up with erratic signals. "They're some kind of sand wraiths. Physical attacks won't hold them for long!"
"Then we burn them," Jenna growled, turning her flamethrower on the wraiths. Flames roared across the sand, causing the creatures to writhe and collapse into ash.
"They'll keep reforming unless we find the source," Ethan warned. "It's coming from the fortress. Strong energy signature buried deep inside."
"Alright, ZETU," Marcus said, rallying the team. "We're heading in. Lila, take point."
Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro led the way, her tracking gear picking up faint trails of the sand wraiths' movements. The fortress's ancient stone corridors were cold and dark, illuminated only by the team's flashlights. Faint scratching noises echoed around them, growing louder as they delved deeper.
"This place is a tomb," Derek "Shield" Coleman muttered, his riot shield at the ready.
As they reached the central chamber, they found the source of the disturbance: a massive obsidian obelisk etched with glowing runes. Around it, dozens of sand wraiths stood motionless, their glowing eyes fixed on the team.
"Ethan, what are we looking at?" Marcus asked.
"The obelisk is controlling them," Ethan said, typing furiously on his tablet. "We destroy that, and we take them out for good."
"Blaze, you're up," Marcus ordered.
Jenna grinned, priming her incendiary grenades. "Everyone clear out. Things are about to get hot."

As she lobbed the grenades, the wraiths sprang to life, charging the team. Riley covered their retreat with precise shots, while Derek used his shield to hold the line. The explosions rocked the chamber, shattering the obelisk into fragments. The wraiths disintegrated, their forms scattering into harmless sand.
"Mission accomplished," Marcus said, catching his breath.
But as they emerged from the fortress, the ground rumbled ominously. From the distance, an even larger figure began to rise from the sands, its glowing eyes fixed on the team.
"This isn't over," Marcus muttered, reloading his shotgun. "Not by a long shot."
