How Do We Play If This Boss Isn't Nerfed?-Chapter 46: War Has Never Been Far Away
In the infirmary, the school doctor stared at the scan report.
He glanced up at the young man before him. His clothes were a little torn and stained with blood, but his face was flushed with color, and he was brimming with Spirit.
His expression was one of utter exasperation.
’There’s nothing wrong with him, yet he insisted I run scans.’
’If he’d come any later, even his surface wounds would’ve been almost healed.’
’So dramatic!’
Chen Meng was stunned.
He asked again, "Wait, Dr. Jiang, I’m pretty sure someone kicked him hard enough to break a few of his ribs just now..."
He had seen Lin Ye get sent flying with his own eyes.
He wouldn’t have misjudged the terrifying force of that kick.
And yet, the school doctor was saying Lin Ye was perfectly fine.
Just a few surface wounds.
Chen Meng led Lin Ye out of the infirmary.
"Kid, what in the world are you made of?"
"How are you so tough?"
Lin Ye felt a pang of guilt.
’I got careless.’
He’d been a split-second too slow to turn off his "Healing out of combat" ability.
Ten seconds after leaving combat, his broken ribs had already mended under his terrifyingly fast recovery.
"I... I don’t know."
Lin Ye could only play dumb.
"Alright, since you’re fine, get out of here."
"I’m canceling this afternoon’s sparring session. Go home, get some rest, and process what you learned today," Chen Meng said gruffly.
"Oh, and starting today, you don’t have to attend any of the basic courses anymore—things like Martial Arts Theory, Introduction to Cultivation Techniques, and, uh... all those academic classes."
"I’m giving you special permission to manage your own schedule."
"But I have to remind you, the monthly exam is only a week away."
Chen Meng stopped and turned his head, his gaze as sharp as a blade.
"Right now, you’re only ranked tenth in your year."
"I want you to be first."
Lin Ye was secretly thrilled.
He’d long felt that the school’s basic courses weren’t of much use to him anymore.
Now that he had Chen Meng’s approval, he would have a lot more free time.
He could go to the ruined city to grind levels more often!
After parting ways with Chen Meng, Lin Ye checked the time and, for once, headed home around noon.
However, as he quietly unlocked the front door, he heard a faint, suppressed sob, so quiet it was barely audible.
Lin Ye froze in the entryway.
In the living room, his mother, Li Wan, had her back to the door. She was clutching a communicator, her voice thick with sobs and pleading.
"Mr. Zhou, is there really... really no news at all?"
Whoever was on the other end of the communicator said something, and Li Wan’s shoulders trembled violently before her arm fell limply to her side.
Then, his sister Lin Wei’s voice, filled with the same desperate helplessness, drifted from a nearby room.
"Mr. Wang, please, could you trouble your old classmate in the Seventh War Zone to help me ask around...? I need to know what’s happening with my dad... Yes, Lin Tao..."
Lin Ye’s heart sank.
’Something happened.’
In the living room, Li Wan hung up and Lin Wei came out of her room. They looked at each other, the rims of both mother and daughter’s eyes were bright red.
"Mom, I’ll try contacting my classmates again, see if any of their families have someone who works for the military..."
"Okay, I’ll... I’ll talk to your uncle, see if he can pull any strings. We have to try something..."
Lin Ye walked straight into the living room, cutting them off.
"Mom. Sis." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
"What’s going on?"
His voice wasn’t loud, but it struck the grieving, helpless pair like a clap of thunder, making them both jump.
"Xiaoye? Why are you home?"
Li Wan frantically wiped the tears from her eyes. She never expected her son to come home so suddenly.
Lin Wei threw her arms around Lin Ye, her body trembling.
"What happened?"
Lin Ye’s voice was calm, but his eyes held a determination that wouldn’t be denied.
Li Wan had already decided she wasn’t going to tell Lin Ye what had happened.
If he hadn’t come home unexpectedly and caught them, she would have kept it a secret.
"It’s nothing..."
"Mom!"
But Lin Wei cut her off. She looked at her mother, her eyes filled with an unprecedented resolve.
"Our little brother’s grown up. He’s not a child who needs our protection anymore."
"With Dad gone, he’s the man of the house."
"We need to face this trouble together, as a family!"
Hearing this, Li Wan’s facade of strength crumbled in an instant.
She nodded as tears streamed silently down her face.
"This morning... we got a message from your dad’s unit."
"Early this morning, the engineering camp in the rear of the Seventh War Zone was ambushed by the Race... Your dad... he was injured. His condition is unknown. The unit couldn’t give us any details, only that he was taken for emergency treatment..."
’The Celestial Abyss Race!’
Lin Ye had always felt those four words were very distant.
Distant from him, and distant from his family.
But now, the reality of it hit him with visceral force.
The war between humanity and the Race had never ended. It had never been far away.
A bone-chilling killing intent, like a volcano dormant for millennia, began to brew deep within Lin Ye’s heart.
He forced himself to remain calm. Looking at his mother and sister, who were on the verge of collapse, he said in a low voice, "Mom, Sis, don’t panic yet."
"My teacher is a veteran. He used to be on the battlefield, so he should have connections in the military."
"I’ll call him and see if he can help."
This suggestion offered a faint glimmer of hope to the despairing mother and daughter.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he used his wristband to send a call request to Chen Meng.
A few seconds later, the call connected.
"What’s wrong?"
Chen Meng saw the look on Lin Ye’s face.
It was a look of barely suppressed rage mixed with overwhelming worry.
Lin Ye didn’t beat around the bush. In the most direct terms possible, he told Chen Meng everything that had happened to his father and the crisis his family was now facing.
On the other side of the light screen, Chen Meng listened in silence, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper.
When Lin Ye finished, Chen Meng was silent for a long time.
After a while, he finally said in a heavy voice, "The unit I served with was the Second War Zone’s Vanguard Battalion. It’s been restructured so many times since then, its designation probably doesn’t even exist anymore."
"My old comrades-in-arms are most likely dead or retired. There aren’t many of us left."
"There’s no way I can reach the Seventh War Zone from my end..."
"Wait here. I’m going to see the principal!"
The call ended abruptly.
Chen Meng didn’t even bother with the stairs. He burst out of his office and leaped directly from the fifth floor.
Moving with terrifying speed, he shot straight toward the principal’s office.
"Battalion Commander! Open up!"
Wang Zhengguo jolted in surprise at Chen Meng’s booming voice.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The heavy pounding continued. Wang Zhengguo’s expression darkened, but knowing it must be urgent, he opened the door.
When he heard Chen Meng’s hurried explanation and learned that it was Lin Ye’s father who was in trouble, even Wang Zhengguo’s normally impassive face showed a flicker of change.
Out of admiration for Lin Ye and respect for a wounded Warrior, he sighed and finally gave an immediate nod.
"I’ll see what I can do. If I recall correctly, a few of my men were transferred to the Seventh War Zone..."
The next half hour was an agonizing eternity for Lin Ye’s family.
Finally, the call from Chen Meng came through again. This time, the serious face of Principal Wang Zhengguo appeared on the light screen alongside him.
"Lin Ye, stay calm. I had to go through several of my old subordinates, but I’ve finally found out what’s going on."
