How I Pampered the Tyrant Into Devotion With My Space-Chapter 25: Only By Following Pei Shu’er Can You Survive
Chapter 25: Follow Pei Shu’er, So You Won’t Die
Here, not having food isn’t the most terrifying thing. The scariest and deadliest is having no water.
It’s also easy to get lost, and I’ve heard there are also sandstorms here.
Thinking of this, everyone’s faces turned extremely grim.
Pei Shu’er, however, remained calm and composed.
She walked up to the brothers Lin Yu and Lin Hong and handed them three bamboo tubes.
"Use them sparingly, and stay close to our third household."
In Pei Shu’er’s view, Lin Yu and Lin Hong already belonged to her subordinates, but they hadn’t fully relied on her yet.
From the moment they saw the desert, everyone understood the value of water, and it was normal for snatching to occur.
The air got drier and drier, and as they walked, everyone’s throats began to ache with thirst.
Everyone had water in their pouches, but only about a pound.
Who would have thought they’d suddenly encounter a desert?
This desert seemed endless, and they didn’t know how long they had to walk.
Now, everyone started to regret not listening to Pei Shu’er.
After all, when Pei Shu’er previously mentioned that there was a desert ahead, her voice wasn’t low, but most of the people’s hearts were dismissive.
Some, however, found Pei Shu’er somewhat miraculous and prepared bamboo tubes as she suggested, and they indeed encountered the desert.
Their hearts felt mixed emotions.
Happy that they prepared water, worried that they didn’t prepare as much as Pei Shu’er, most only had about three pounds.
The first day was okay, although everyone was short on water, it wasn’t serious.
But by the afternoon of the second day, even with parched lips, everyone only dared to sip a little water to wet their mouths.
There were children crying for water: "Mother, I’m so thirsty, can I have some water?"
"No, there isn’t much water now, and we don’t know where we can get more. Bear with it; after another two miles, I’ll give you some."
There were also the wails and sighs of some exiles, all of which filled Pei Shu’er’s ears.
These sounds didn’t stop throughout the journey, but in the desert, the situation was particularly severe.
During the day, it was still the black bread and porridge distributed by the government officer.
At night, all they could see was yellow sand, with no food in sight, so no one could eat.
Pei Shu’er, however, smiled as she gave the previously boiled wild eggs to the people of the third household.
"Eat, have two to fill your stomachs."
Tang Shuo and Tang Qinghuan were taken aback before they rushed forward to embrace Pei Shu’er.
"Sister-in-law, why are you so amazing?"
Pei Shu’er smiled. She had boiled the wild eggs and kept them in her space, so they didn’t spoil.
When Tang Zan received two wild eggs, he was still in a daze and looked up at Pei Shu’er.
"You’re really something."
Ignoring his sarcastic tone, Pei Shu’er could completely take his words as a compliment.
For the second and fourth households, Old Madam Tang and Pei Shu’er each gave one egg, but those of the big household, Pei Shu’er pretended not to see.
The people of the big household were so angry they cursed aloud, only to be glared at by Old Madam Tang.
"Why do you think Shu’er treats you this way? Don’t you know?"
Besides, the water in those bamboo tubes was carried by the third household, Lin Yu, Lin Hong, and Granny Zhang, with each person getting three tubes a day. Once finished, that was it.
At first, people would give water to the big household, but the big household was shameless, always drinking as if trying to get their money’s worth; one gulp would consume half a bamboo tube.
Who would dare offer water to the big household anymore?
The further they went, the more severe the desert’s conditions became, and many had already died from water shortage along the way.
Pei Shu’er wasn’t a saint and didn’t bother with those people.
Especially since those people were the ones poisoned before and wouldn’t have lived long anyway.
The number of people dying from thirst increased, but the Tang family, except for the big household, was in relatively good spirits and hadn’t suffered much from thirst.
Pei Shu’er had hidden some boiled water in her space, using large cisterns procured in the modern era. She couldn’t bear to let everyone drink directly from the Spiritual Spring Water; instead, she used water boiled that night.
However, for those in the third household, all the water they drank was mixed with Spiritual Spring Water, so everyone wasn’t too exhausted.
When resting at night, they all sat around the campfire. The huge temperature difference between day and night in the desert made everyone shiver with cold.
Pei Shu’er held Tang Shuo and Tang Qinghuan in her arms, covering all three with her clothes, allowing them to comfortably pass a few more nights.
Along the journey, so many people had died that even Lu Qing was alarmed by the number of deaths.
Lin Yu and Lin Hong stayed by Pei Shu’er’s side and shared their decision along the way.
"Miss Pei, we want to follow you, hoping you can give us five bamboo tubes of water each."
After spending time together, the brothers discovered that Pei Shu’er treated her people well, and even the subordinates were the same.
This price was already ridiculously low, but given the situation, even a single bamboo tube was enough to make someone work for you.
Others added, "Miss Pei, you only need to give us three tubes, and we’ll follow you." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"We only want two tubes."
"We only want one tube!"
Being able to win these people’s support, Pei Shu’er didn’t mind giving out a bamboo tube; she had plenty in her space.
She put on a pained expression as if parting with something cherished.
"Sigh, then follow me; I can’t promise anything, but I’ll try not to let everyone die on this exile journey."
Hearing Pei Shu’e’s promise, everyone felt more secure that they were following the right person.
After distributing the bamboo tubes, there wasn’t much water left in her basket.
The gain was that she now had ten subordinates, all young and strong.
The big household had gone from being high and mighty to humble.
They were on the verge of dying from thirst and were starving, with their ribs almost showing through their skin; more importantly, the poison was spreading faster due to lack of water.
They thought they were about to die.
They approached Pei Shu’er, crying with snot and tears.
"Shu’er, what Uncle said before might have sounded bad, but he meant well. Can you please give Uncle a bit of water?"
Pei Shu’er sighed helplessly, "Sorry, the water is almost gone. There’s nothing I can do."
Now everyone knew Pei Shu’er wanted nothing to do with the big household, given how they treated her before.
Moreover, compared to some extreme cases, Pei Shu’er was actually rather mild.
After all, some families had even resorted to cannibalism, though it was hidden, kept secret.
There had been several cases of murder.
Even with the big household’s excessive behavior, Pei Shu’er merely ignored them and offered no assistance, which didn’t seem too much to anyone.
More so since everyone was struggling to survive, who cared about those they disliked?
Tang Peilin was stunned; he hadn’t expected Pei Shu’er to be so ruthless despite his pleading.
Mrs. Li, also teary-eyed, paused and glanced at Pei Shu’er with resentment.
"Pei Shu’er, aren’t you being too stingy, watching us die of thirst?"
"We’re still your uncle and aunt; do you have no conscience? You wretch!"
The accusation was so baseless that Pei Shu’er couldn’t help but laugh.
"Don’t you know how much food you’ve eaten from me?"
Old Madam Tang sighed, "Shu’er, Grandma knows you hold grudges, but he is still your uncle."
Ultimately, they were her children and grandchildren, and she couldn’t bear to see them die.
Pei Shu’er used to think Old Madam Tang was fair, but now she realized she might have thought too much.
She sighed and shook her head.
"Grandma, I’ve given plenty of water to the Tang family. If anyone wants to help them, they can share their water. You don’t have to put pressure on a young girl like me."
Now that she had her subordinates, she no longer needed to remain tied to the Tang family.
To her, she really felt out of place with the Tang family.
Should she find an opportunity to break away?
