I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 728 - 725: A Man’s Secrets (4)
Two people, one drinking alcohol, the other drinking juice, talking about childhood memories. Nathan Leafcastle occasionally smiled, but Vera Wave seldom did. Even when she smiled, it carried a hint of bitterness.
At first, he spoke, and she responded.
Later on, she gradually became sleepy, leaning against the windowsill as she listened to his voice and fell asleep.
Putting down the empty wine glass, he turned to look at her. Nathan Leafcastle leaned forward, moving closer to her face.
By the moonlight, he gazed at her delicate face, raising his hand to gently stroke her cheek, his eyes lingering on her slightly parted lips. He pursed his lips, moving closer to her little by little.
In all these years, he had never been this close to her, and just as he was about to kiss her.
His phone suddenly vibrated in his pocket.
Startled, Nathan quickly pulled back, took out his phone.
On the screen, Sally Dalton’s call was displayed.
Frowning, he answered the call, standing up to step out of the attic.
"Nathan, things on my end are not settled yet. It’ll be a couple of days before I can return."
"Alright, focus on your work then."
"Are you okay?"
"I’m good, no need to worry. It’s late, you should get some rest." He glanced towards the attic, "I ran into Vera today. She’s not doing well. I’m having her stay the night. You don’t mind, right?"
"Vera?! She’s out of prison?"
"Yeah."
"Maybe she should take a taxi home. I’ve been drinking; I can’t drive."
"It’s fine, there’s a guest room. It’s not safe for her, being a girl, so late at night."
"Then let her stay."
Ending the call, Nathan returned to the attic, where Vera had started groggily opening her eyes.
"It’s too late, I should head out!"
"The driver has already left. It’s so late; you won’t be able to open your door. Just stay," Nathan suggested.
"If Miss Jane knows, it could lead to misunderstandings." Vera rose to her feet, "Lend me a hundred dollars, I’ll grab a cab to Isla’s for tonight."
"It’s alright, I just spoke to Sally; she knows you’re here." Nathan put his hand on her shoulder, "It’s not safe for you alone at this hour, and I’ve been drinking too. Don’t you trust me?"
"No... that’s not what I meant."
"Then stay." He withdrew his hand, "I’ll prepare the guest room for you."
Checking his watch, it was already midnight. Vera was embarrassed to disturb Isla so late.
Isla lived with her parents, and surely they were already asleep.
Resigned, she followed Nathan downstairs into the guest room.
Nathan brought her a set of pajamas. "These were bought for Sally, but she hasn’t worn them. Just make do for a night."
"Thank you."
Vera took them, and Nathan bid her goodnight before turning to leave.
Moving over, she shut and locked the door, then glanced at the clothes by the bed before putting them aside and heading to the restroom for a quick wash.
Thinking from a woman’s perspective, if she were Sally Dalton, she wouldn’t want others wearing her clothes.
She didn’t touch Sally Dalton’s pajamas, instead resting on the pillow wearing her own clothes.
Lying on the pillow, she thought of Kris Cooper, frowning again.
...
...
Outside the door.
Across the room.
Nathan Leafcastle sipped from his cup, watching the door to her room. In the dim light, his dark eyes appeared deep and brooding.
