I Am Your Natural Enemy-Chapter 561 - 223: Dream Tapir Amulet, Advancing the Second Stage (5k)_2
He started his usual days of staying at home.
The Pei Tugou family next door had also moved back, so Wen Yan went to check in on their silly kid.
After more than a month without seeing him, the silly kid had grown a lot—chubby, with three little rolls of baby fat on his arms that looked like he was wearing floaties.
And when he saw Wen Yan, he’d wave his chubby hands and drool like an idiot—he actually looked even dumber than before.
"Don’t be silly now. You can only drink milk at your age. Wait till you’re older and then you can get solid food—staring at me won’t help."
No one knows if the silly kid understood or not—he just kept smacking his lips, drooling, and making little sucking noises.
After playing with the silly kid for a while and having a meal with the whole family, Wen Yan went back home.
He took out his phone and started researching again.
With his clearance, looking up info on Dream Tapirs wasn’t all that hard.
In Nanwu County, there was only one Dream Tapir at the moment, running a shop in Yu State—quite a few guys from the Scorching Sun Department were customers there.
Across all of Divine Land, the total Dream Tapir population was already in classic endangered mode.
There were just over a hundred left, most of them living in Tianfu County.
Every single one had a file at the Scorching Sun Department, and they were among the very first Different Races to ever be officially archived there.
So yeah, these guys were living pretty well now—basically set up as model minorities by the Scorching Sun Department.
They didn’t actually need any resources from the human world. Their biggest requirement was people, but even then, they didn’t actually harm anyone.
Even other Different Races had no beef with Dream Tapirs.
Hell, if you offed a Dream Tapir, the Scorching Sun Department would open a top-priority investigation. No one would mess with them without a damn good reason.
Wen Yan looked over the files and memorized every single Dream Tapir’s name.
There were just over a hundred anyway—it wouldn’t take long to memorize all of them.
Each file had a photo attached. In their human forms, Wen Yan could actually tell the difference, but when it came to their True Body photos, he honestly couldn’t see a single difference—they looked like someone had copy-pasted the same image a hundred times.
Probably for confidentiality or something...
Just as Wen Yan finished looking through everything, Cai Qidong called him up.
"Why are you checking out info on Dream Tapirs all of a sudden?"
"Huh, you even monitor this stuff?"
"Sensitive archives—all access gets logged. If you view just one, no big deal. But you checked through every single file, that triggers a red flag."
"Oh, I was just browsing."
"Did something happen to you?"
"I had a nightmare last night—dreamed about a Water Monkey, and it absolutely kicked my ass. I asked a senior about it, and they told me to memorize all the Dream Tapir names. I had no idea which one to go with, so I memorized the whole lot."
"Seriously?" Cai Qidong sounded skeptical.
These past couple of days, someone powerful had entered his dreams. The other guy was so skilled that none of his dream wards had even triggered.
Clearly, whoever it was had known he had set up protections, so they just dialed back their Power enough to only Enter the Dream.
That level of precision—not a beginner’s work, for sure.
He was already suspecting that the stuff he’d been working on lately had gotten too close to sensitive territory.
And just today, he’d gotten a report that Wen Yan was combing through Dream Tapir archives.
At first, he wondered if this whole thing was somehow tied to Wen Yan.
I mean, after all—infiltrating someone’s dream, then screwing around by whistling and doing other weird shit, totally sounded like something Wen Yan would do.
But thinking it over, he still felt Wen Yan had been the target, not the culprit.
Last time, Fuyu Mountain tried to use Wen Yan as a pawn, hoping to borrow the Old Celestial Master’s Power to help him break through into cultivation, but it never worked out.
He knew for a fact, Wen Yan only had talent in Martial Training. When it came to cultivation, he was hopeless—the Old Celestial Master couldn’t do a thing for him.
Stuff like Dream Infiltration—high-level stuff like that—was definitely out of Wen Yan’s league.
"Just be careful. But honestly, this has nothing to do with Dream Tapirs. They don’t mess with nightmares. Go get yourself a Dream Tapir Amulet—worst case, you dream of one and it’ll avoid you anyway."
"Can I redeem one from the department?"
"They’re available—but out of stock. What, you think these things grow on trees? There are only a few dozen per year—barely enough to go around. You’ve got your own connections, don’t you? Go find that wandering merchant—you manage to get one, it’s all yours."
Wen Yan curled his lip. Damn, Cai Heizi is stingy as hell.
"Minister, word is you haven’t been feeling too great lately? You been to the hospital?"
"Beep... beep..."
Cai Qidong hung up hard.
He knew it—even a simple call with Wen Yan never ended without getting pissed off. Somehow, Wen Yan always managed to push his buttons.
Wen Yan looked at his phone, half laughing in disbelief.
Seriously, though, he was actually trying to be a good colleague and care about the boss’s health for once!
Cai Heizi is way too sensitive, man! 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞
Wen Yan was at a loss for words. He scrolled through his contacts and called up Old Meng, only to find his phone was switched off. No clue what’s up with Old Meng—hopefully he didn’t get into trouble. Wen Yan had a fortune in Big Yellow Fish stashed with him.
After thinking for a bit, he decided to call up Zhuge Wanjun.
"Hey Wan Jun, how’s it going lately?"
"Boss, I was just about to call and check in on you. How are you doing? I actually heard there’s been some drama at your house again."
"I’m great, really. Hey, I wanted to ask you about something—was planning to call Old Meng, but his phone’s off, so I thought I’d ask you."
"Uncle Meng got himself into a bit of trouble lately, and he’s keeping things on the down low. Don’t worry about him—he’s fine. So, what’s up, boss?"
"Do you know the Dream Tapir in Yu State?"
"Yeah, I do. Done business with him; I’ve sent him clients before, and helped him handle some legal issues, too."
