I Became My Healer Elf Character-Chapter 90: Modernity in Motion
When Hikari arrived at the island, it didn't take her long to find her ship. Of course, she had the contracts with people on board, but of all the ships hers was one of the biggest. The frigate had a signature look about it, not to mention the flag that was erected for Hikari.
A large sprawling city sat on the coast. Hikari estimated it could have only been a little smaller than the harbor city they left from. Either way, her dragon took her and the other two girls towards the ship, and the elf checked on her crew.
They arrived at noon, and Amelia, the angel, and the kids were already somewhere in the city staying at an inn. According to the maids, they'd left two nights prior. Yet nothing had happened to them so far. No run ins with criminals. No shady merchants. Not even trouble with the local law or guards.
"I'm impressed they managed to do so well while we were gone," Hikari said.
Ayase shrugged. "Amelia might seem a little ditsy, but she's not really stupid. She's a goddess in her own right, you know? If something happened to them, she could easily level this city on her own."
Hikari smiled wryly from Ayase's explanation.
The witch sighed and stared at the elf. "You didn't forget that she's a goddess, did you?"
"N-no, of course not! Anyway, a change of topic. We should go look for their inn. I can sense where it is."
"Master, there's no need for that. Even if you could sense them, I can smell Akari from here."
The elf grinned and patted her dragon on the head. "You should lead the way then."
Kurayami's tail waved back and forth. She smiled brightly and leaned into the pats. "It feels great when Master relies on me."
"Ah," Ayase said, "I want pats too!"
"Me too, Mistress!"
Hikari frowned at the other two girls. "Neither of you are getting pats until I feel like it. You should work in order to be spoiled."
"I'll work very hard, Mistress!"
Ayase pouted and crossed her arms. "Hmph, tsundere."
"When you say it like that, you're the one who looks more like a tsundere. Earlier you were calling me kindhearted. Now, I am a tsundere."
"These things are not mutually exclusive. A tsundere can be kindhearted. It's simply that they've trouble displaying their proper emotions and are easily emotionally overwhelmed. I'd say that describes you somewhat."
"Stop trying to caricature me. Both of us know that those things are more like types. Speaking of types, we should see what type of city we've stumbled upon."
With those words, Hikari ended the conversation, and they began their walk down the docks with a little dragon at the helm. The only problem with having the dragon lead was the way she mean mugged the guards by simply walking by them. Her glare made the guards a bit jumpy, but they said nothing otherwise and let them pass.
On the docks there were many storefronts serving things like fish, and there was even one that claimed they'd catch you a huge fish for a certain amount of gold coins or your money back.
It reminded Hikari of those infomercials she'd seen on Earth. Try this fishing company for 90 days and love it or your money back!
There were no such things as skyscrapers in this world, but several of the buildings did get tall, including a guild she'd not seen prior to coming here.
She stared up at the sign of building made of white stone. "Ocean Explorer's Guild?"
"It's for people who want to sail around everywhere," Ayase said. "We'll not need a membership, but this guild covers a lot of things. They've got ships people can purchase and goods for those ships. Along with that, they provide rites of passage for people sailing in international waters. Additionally, they'll provide bounties for pirate gangs and give updates on dangerous sailing locations."
"I see. By the way, Ayase…"
"Yes?"
"Since you've been here a while, I'd have expected you to create some modern technologies. Is there a reason you didn't try to make those things?"
The witch blushed and turned away. "The truth is, I couldn't make them even if I tried. I was never the best at figuring the science behind that stuff out. We all had smartphones, but how many people truly knew how they worked? I didn't. The only thing I know about it is they had a battery and some kind of circuit board. But it's possible other transmigrators came and invented stuff. There were some suspicious inventions to say the least."
"Yeah," Hikari agreed. "This place is advanced sometimes in the strangest ways. There is long distance communication, and the guild plates for adventurers is like an ID card reader. It seems their inventors supplemented electricity for magic."
"But surely if it's you, you'd be able to invent it. You even brought the taste of home back. Is there a possibility you will make the internet here?"
Hikari shook her head. "Bringing flavors here is completely different. Besides, I might know some of the processes to make these things, but actually implementing them would take time. And I'm not even sure such a thing would be good."
The witch chuckled. "Relax, I was simply pulling your leg. I don't think you need to change anything about this world. You've not even seen the most interesting parts yet. Just wait until you visit those dragon islands."
Kurayami raised her eyebrow. "Dragon islands? Hmm, if I had to guess they're nothing special. I'm more interested in this place that you and Master keep bringing up. Even the food we tried, I want more of it." The dragon looked towards Hikari and pleaded. "When are you going to take me there, Master?"
Ayase nodded. "I'd love to go back to Earth at some point. Although, I'd like to take a certain snake before we leave."
Hikari looked helplessly at the dragon and the witch. "Even if I can take you there, we first need to finish our business here. Besides, it wouldn't be very nice to leave Senjo on her own forever." The elf finally looked up at the inn they'd found. "Also, it looks like we've arrived."
The building was large polished marble on the wealthier side of the city. That being said, there were not really any glaringly poor residents like in the harbor city. It seemed that the lord who ran the place had a much better handle of things.
Hikari and her group entered through the marble-painted wooden door. Upon entry, they found a large dining room fit for a royal palace. It had been the biggest one that Hikari had seen thus far, and each table was decorated with white cloths. The brown flooring contrasted everything, but there were not many windows to view outside. Overall the atmosphere was a bit darker, yet it still provided comfort.
A sharp-dressed man was at the door awaiting them. "Are you here for dinner reservations, or are you looking for room?"
"You do dinner reservations too?"
"Yes, while this restaurant is for residents choosing to stay at our humble hotel, it's also for people simply wishing to eat."
The elf looked towards her salivating dragon. "I suppose we can dine here, but we already have people staying here. Is it possible for you to call them down? Also, what kind of food do you serve here?"
He smiled and handed Hikari a menu. "We serve mostly seafood here, but I assure you, you'll not find a better seafood place in the world. Also, hmm, you must be Hikari, right?"

"How did you know? Did we meet somewhere?"
The man waved her off. "No-no, it's simply that the little girl who comes down here was quite fond of you. She's well-behaved and adorable. It seems her mother takes great care of her. Also, you may call me Samuel. That's what all of the other familiar guests do."
Hikari looked over the menu, noticing some familiar items. However, some of the fishes used were different. Additionally, it seemed that they incorporated some aquatic monsters into their recipes. Speaking of which, the elf was still hoping to get a hand on some of this water spider silk. She'd yet to even see a water spider monster on her travels and she traveled deep into the ocean. It seemed that people weren't fibbing about its rarity.
The elf finally looked back at Samuel. "We will reserve a table. Again, is it possible for you to call the others down?"
"My apologies, Lady Hikari. It is certainly possible. I will have someone call for them immediately. It seems that you're just in time. That group had not even eaten their lunch yet. In the meanwhile, you can take a seat at that table. If you've any questions, feel free to ask me."
"Thank you. I actually do have some questions if you wouldn't mind..."
