I Became the Eye Candy: Four Bigshots Claimed to be My Dad?-Chapter 126: They Said They Didn’t Care, But They All Felt Heartache
"The Academy has already decided to expel the Seventh Prince."
"And the second time?" Xiang Minghou asked grimly.
"Hmm?"
"You said she was frightened twice. Who scared her the second time?" He wouldn’t spare anyone who hurt his daughter.
"There was an assassination attempt last night. We don’t know who was behind it." Dean Chen didn’t bring up the symbiotic link; since Xiang Minghou didn’t know about it, there was no need for him to get involved.
Since the little girl had given him the symbiotic link, he was now obligated to protect her. Once she recovered, he would make those people give up any and all hope.
’An assassination?’
Xiang Minghou was suddenly reminded of the major event in the Capital City yesterday. The Yu family had been abruptly thrown into the dungeons of the Ministry of Justice. He had no idea what for.
’Now that I think about it...’ He thought of Qian Fanji. Qian Fanji had appeared at the Academy yesterday and saved Pangtuan, and that very afternoon, the Yu family was imprisoned. It had all the hallmarks of Qian Fanji’s handiwork.
’Even though the Yu family is in the dungeons, their roots run deep. They would have more than enough ways to send someone to assassinate Pangtuan.’
"The Academy has already sent people to investigate. We will inform you the moment we have any findings, General," Dean Chen said. He’d heard from the Academy guards that many intruders had been lurking on the grounds last night.
It was still unclear which faction had made a move.
"I’ll investigate this myself. And I will post additional guards at the Academy." At the mention of guards, Xiang Minghou suddenly strode out the door and scanned the surroundings. He couldn’t sense the presence of Luo Wen and his three men, and his sharp gaze narrowed instantly.
’If those four had been by Pangtuan’s side, this never would have happened. Luo Wen, Luo Xuan, and the others were men he had trained himself. They wouldn’t just vanish without a trace.’
Failing to sense their presence filled Xiang Minghou with a terrible premonition. ’Could the four of them have been... eliminated?’
"COUGH... COUGH..."
A faint cough from the bed pulled both men from their thoughts.
Xiang Minghou rushed back into the room.
The Imperial Physician was just putting away his needles. He bowed to Xiang Minghou. "General Xiang."
"How is my daughter?"
"A fever brought on by a severe fright is incredibly dangerous for a child. We have already administered the maximum dose of fever-reducing medicine, but the fever hasn’t broken. Instead, she’s begun to tremble all over. Even acupuncture has had no effect on her complexion. We can try the medicine a few more times, but if the fever still doesn’t recede... whether she pulls through will be up to her." The Imperial Physician shook his head.
Xiang Minghou was horrified. His vision swam, and he nearly fainted on the spot.
Zhan Chi, Gu Shuo, and Qian Fanji arrived just in time to hear this. They all froze. ’Is she really that sick?’
"Little Fatty." Zhan Chi was the first to react, rushing straight to the bedside.
Ye Qianning was buried under several thick quilts. Her cheeks were flushed a frightening, deep red, and her entire body was burning hot. She lay on the bed, completely still.
Gu Shuo, too, lost his usual composure and swept into the room. A single glance was enough to make his heart clench. Her usually chubby face now seemed like a thin, translucent film stretched over pulsing red plasma.
The first time he’d met her was still vivid in his mind—a little girl with big, bright eyes, full of life. Her smile had been so beautiful.
But now she lay motionless on the bed. The longer he looked, the more his heart ached.
Even Qian Fanji’s normally placid expression darkened, and the fingers hidden in his sleeves clenched into tight fists.
Ye Qianning’s condition was so dire it would have moved any stranger, to say nothing of the young men standing before her.
Xiang Minghou steadied himself, then knelt and leaned over the bed. His large hand stroked her head, his voice trembling. "Pangtuan, you have to get better. When you’re all better, Dad will take you to see the broadsword performers, and I’ll buy you all sorts of delicious treats..."
