I Became the Moon Goddess' Apostle in a Dark Fantasy-Chapter 57: Mercy
Pevon’s face scrunched as he mumbled under his breath, ’Fuck you, Raven.’
"Pevon, what did he say?" Janet asked, since she was not able to hear it.
"Nothing that you should be concerned about." He pinched the bridge of his nose, "I mean,"
He exhaled loudly.
"He asked us to interrogate that granny till she is alive."
He saw Carroll give him a side eye.
Pevon was clearly not telling her the entire thing.
Carroll knew exactly what he said.
But Pevon couldn’t be bothered to say anything.
He assumed she was smart enough to understand.
"Interrogate... that?" She pointed towards the granny.
Both of her legs were sliced cleanly.
Her skin was melting as they spoke, and she had some other cuts all over her body.
It was by far the most pitiful and horrifying scene they had ever witnessed.
"How is she even alive?" Janet asked, averting her gaze whenever she could.
"I think it is the residual vitality of the accursed," Zuri answered.
"Which means she is suffering continuously as we speak." Carroll’s words were like an arrow to his heart.
Oh!
Everyone immediately understood what this meant.
Pevon glared at her.
She basically made everyone equally liable now.
They weren’t a bunch who could let this happen.
The granny was a human after all.
"Let us interrogate her first." Pevon moved forward, reaching the granny.
Phew!
He exhaled again, trying his hardest not to avert his eyes from the scene.
"Granny!" He called out.
Ughrgh!
She groaned, her windpipe riddled with burns.
This was really tough to handle.
"Why did you form a contract with an accursed?"
Ughrgh!
She didn’t say anything.
No.
It was more like,
"Her windpipe is destroyed in its entirety," He informed them, "She cannot speak anymore."
But suddenly, her hands moved.
She pointed towards the horse stable behind the monastery, and her hand fell down.
Fss!
A sizzling sound occurred.
Pevon followed the sound and realized it was from her eyes.
Was she... crying?
Her burnt hand clenched the dirt, digging her palms into it.
She was angry.
Insanely angry.
And she was hurting.
Pevon realized he might get his answer in there.
He would investigate it later.
But now, he had something important to do.
It was time.
His hands shook.
He knew all it would take was a single strike down her neck to relieve her of the pain.
But how could he? 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
When Raven was teaching them how to butcher an animal and drain out its blood before it was safe to eat, he was already feeling bad for them.
And he was supposed to kill a human being?
’Oh God,’ His eyes nearly blurred from the sweat dripping down his brow.
He was on the verge of hyperventilating.
’Pevon,’ He shouted his own name internally, ’You have to do it, Pevon.’
’You have to do it.’
’You have to do it.’
"You have to do it."
Slice!
...
Ugh!
In a shabby house made up of damp wood and dark lighting, a young man groaned, rolling in the makeshift bed.
Ouch!
He opened his golden eyes, thanks to a sharp pain tearing through his thighs.
Aah!
"Fuck!"
A cramp.
His thighs had a cramp due to his sudden movement, which led him to flinch, leading to even more cramps.
’Fuck! Fuck! Agh! No!’ He tried calming down, but it was proving to be extremely challenging.
Thud!
"Dante, you are awake?" The door opened with a bang as Pevon rushed inside.
"Hold me down," He immediately made a request as his first words after waking up.
Pevon, seeing the situation, understood and immediately held him down.
Ugh!
The pain worsened, but it was the only way for it to calm down and break this seemingly impossible streak.
A few moments later, Raven finally recovered.
Memories of some events flashed before his eyes, riling him up.
"What happened after I fainted?" He asked agitatedly, "Is everyone fine?"
"Well..." Pevon sounded a bit unsure, "Not everyone."
Raven frowned hard, "What do you mean?"
"Carroll."
"What happened to her?"
Sigh!
"It’s all my fault," Pevon started with confessing, "After you fainted, I interrogated that granny, and when it was time to finally let her rest, my..."
Huff!
"My hands didn’t move," He confessed.
"And seeing my indecisiveness, Carroll took the task in her own hands and..."
Wow!
Raven was speechless.
He didn’t know what to say.
She heard his words?
"A kind soul," Raven could only mutter this in his speechlessness.
"How is she now?" He asked.
"She is recovering, although she’s still a bit down." He answered, "It was much worse before."
She was brave, too.
Quietest, but also the bravest.
"What about the rest?" He changed the topic, leaving this topic for his future self to tackle.
"Janet immediately set out with her horse to fetch a Bishop, and," He paused, "Zuri is trying to uplift Carroll’s moon."
Hmm!
"It would take Janet at least 3 days to come back," He murmured to himself.
But Pevon broke this illusion immediately, "She would be arriving in a few hours now, Raven."
His voice had a sense of somberness, "You were a goner for like 3 days already."
Damn!
He kind of expected it when he felt his mana conduit being drained of every last drop it contained.
But it was a different shock actually hearing about it.
His mind was a mess.
And there was so much to process.
So, the sentence was followed by a minute-long silence.
Hmm...!
"What about the granny?"
Pevon’s mood became darker again.
Which made him anxious.
Just how much bad news did they have?
"She most likely did everything for her revenge."
"What revenge?" Raven barked back, "She is the reason why so many people died."
But Pevon didn’t reply to that.
Instead, he continued, "Before Carroll put her in the eternal sleep, she pointed towards the monastery’s stable, and her hand dug into the ground."
"So, we took that as a direct clue and dug up a bit of the stable’s ground before we discovered something."
Raven didn’t like the tone he was using.
It just meant yet another tragedy.
"We found the bodies of a young man and a young woman..."
"...Decapitated, and their heads ledged into a cross."
