Chapter 61: The Wrong Impression

"Do you reckon the Pope and the Apostle would be present at the birthday banquet?"

"..."

Pfft!

Haha! Hahaha!

The bishop burst into thunderous laughter, which echoed in the entire hallway.

"Just-" His laughter slipped in again, but he immediately contained it, "Just for that, you came here in such a hurry?"

Raven was confused.

What was so amusing about this situation?

His face should make it clear that he wasn’t in the best mood.

"I guess, there is a reason why Cardinal Eve still dotes on you so much."

’What the fuck is he talking about?’ Raven was getting so confused.

His laugh was gradually fading as he got ready to answer.

"And to answer your question, unfortunately for you, no, the pope and the apostle would most likely not be there."

Raven internally sighed, his expression going back to normal.

"The Pope and the Apostle are too busy to attend the birthday banquet of his daughter," He informed him, "Though the Grand Protonotary’s own birthday banquet might have been a different story."

Phew!

He sighed in relief.

His expression slowly became neutral, but the Bishop misunderstood that.

Pat!

He patted his shoulder, "Don’t worry, Raven, as her brother, you would get your chance to meet them eventually."

’That’s exactly what I don’t- Ohh!’

He finally realized.

The Bishop misunderstood the situation, thinking his haste in asking the question was to have a chance to meet the two of them.

Complete opposite of his actual intentions.

So, he decided to simply go with the flow.

"I guess," he sighed, his expression dimming further.

"Alright," He said, his expression determined, "Don’t worry,"

Raven gulped, not liking the flow of this anymore.

Did he overdo it?

"I will mention your desire to meet them in my next report to your sister-"

"No, no, no, no, stop stop." He immediately cut his words off, "Hold your horses, your grace."

"There’s absolutely no need to bother her like this," He turned around, giving him a short bow, "I should be taking my leave, your grace."

He waved at him and left the premises immediately.

’Filial lad,’ Bishop chuckled, watching his vanishing slowly, ’Doesn’t want to disturb his sister.’

"I should mention it regardless," He mumbled, "I am sure he would be happy with this little surprise."

...

’I should buy some Crysalon regardless.’

Oblivious to the impending doom upon him, Raven was planning for something equally as important.

’Most likely’ didn’t mean it was completely out of question.

But where would he even find that?

He should have asked Bishop for this favor, but he just didn’t want to discuss it with him.

Which meant he needed to ask someone much more knowledgeable.

But who?

...

The next day, in a coffeehouse not very far from the church, two people were sitting inside, ordering some coffee.

The ambiance inside was quite cozy, and it was one of the more recommended spots in the city.

"Here’s your coffee, mister and missus. Enjoy!"

The waiter served them the coffee after a small wait and left with a smile.

Sip!

Zuri took a small sip of the coffee and looked at the golden-eyed man who had invited her here on short notice.

"So," She put the cup back on the saucer, "What is this sudden invitation about?"

"Oh, no, it’s just... socializing, you know." Raven fiddled a bit, trying to ease her into the conversation.

"Oh, sure!" She smiled, taking another sip of the coffee, "Socializing, huh?"

"..."

’Is she trying to antagonize me?’ He groaned, sipping his coffee in this uncomfortable environment.

They both kept sipping in complete silence, and before long, his coffee was about to finish.

Ugh!

"Hey, Zuri," He finally caved in.

Hmm?

Her eyes sparkled, celebrating her little victory over Raven.

It annoyed Raven a bit.

"Do you happen to know where I can find a little amount of Crysalon?"

His words stunned Zuri.

"Crysalon?" She asked, her voice louder than normal.

Raven nodded, confirming her question.

"Yeah, about 300 grams of it."

"3-" She tripped on her words.

But collecting herself quickly, she whispered, "Why do you need that?"

"A fashion and a public statement," He said, not even hiding it, "I need to make a shoulder guard out of it."

"Need?" She asked, aware of his splurging habits.

She hoped for him to falter, but Raven doubled down.

"Yes, need." He replied, "I need it for a banquet in Dawn City, I am supposed to attend."

"You were invited by Dawn?" Her eyes sparkled again, this time for a different reason. "What banquet?"

"..."

Raven didn’t answer, but his deadpan eyes did it for him.

Ahem!

"I apologize for my nosy behavior." She shifted her posture, her expression back from the excited one.

"It’s alright," He said, "I would forgive you if you just answer my question."

"Sure," She finished her coffee and leaned forward, "Just make your way to the biggest smithy in the City, and ask around."

"..."

"That’s it?" He asked, his brows raised.

"Mhmm!"

"Even I thought of it before coming to you."

"You should trust yourself and your decisions more, I guess." She said, standing up from the chair.

"Good luck on your task, Raven." She bade him farewell after this rather anticlimactic conversation of theirs.

Raven sat there, in a daze, staring at the wall in front.

"Anything else, sir?" The waiter suddenly asked, waking him up from the daze.

"No, no, thank you." He stumbled upon his words.

"How much is the bill, again?" He asked him, standing up from his chair.

"The total for two coffees would be 12 Sens, sir."

Expensive.

But it was a fancy coffeehouse, after all.

Taking out two 10-Sens coins from his pouch, he put them on the table and promptly left.

’Well, that was a waste of time.’ He sighed. ’But at least the coffee was good.’

Little positive things in life are the key.

’Or something like that.’

He shrugged, climbing up to his horse.

"Let’s go, Rowan," He caressed his horse softly, "To the biggest blacksmith shop in the city."
