At the start of the warning, with news on the forts capture by enemy forces spreading, the militias had been scrambled in case the monsters would attack the City.

However, after an almost week of inactivity from the monsters, the atmosphere slowly calmed itself, though there are some voices on the issue of resources and income of Zell City.

Zell City’s income is mostly from the loots obtained from Zell Forest and the Bugs. To not be able to enter the forest caused some adventurers to leave. Which prompt more adventurers to follow them.

The situation itself is not good, but none of the higher-ups were interested in attacking the forts, not when they lack knowledge of the strength of the newest monsters.

And so, Zell City continued their observation, trying to obtain any new information by baiting the monsters into a skirmish. For now, their attempt were unsuccessful, causing the higher-ups to believe the presence of either a powerful monster, or a leader in the forest.

However, without any evidence or method to smoke the leader out, the higher-ups were forced to let the City undergo this form of siege.

On the walls of Zell City, a group of people watched over the field at the front. Though, only one fifth are soldiers while the rest are militias.

"Captain, how’s thing going up above?" one of the militia asked the leader of their patrol group. The man is not one of the highest-rank officers but he is the highest rank in vicinity, hence the militia asked the man, hoping to learn something new.

Unfortunately for the man, the captain shook his head.

"Nothing new. The higher-ups did not know why the attack happened, and why the forts were specifically targeted, except that there should be smart monsters leading the Swarm, as they decided to call it."

Nothing new, though the name is a new one.

"Swarm, made sense. They like locust, probably going running over us and stripping us of flesh from our bones." Another militia said, earning laughter from others for the gallow humor. Enjoy new chapters from novelbuddy

The captain smiled before adding, "Maybe they will do that. But, we will slaughter all of them." His words earned loud "Yeah!" from his men, showing their morale still high.

He hope the trend continued, as low morale would lead to rout, fleeing and desertion. The captain about to continue his patrol when he spotted a small group of monsters.

Realizing that he might found an opportunity for both rewards and information, he looked at one of his man, who has a war horn on his belt.

The glance of his captain prompted the man to blow the horn, signaling that enemy is in sight.

The general stood up so fast his chair went flying, "Send in the company closest to the alarm, and attack the group of monsters. Make sure they will bring the corpses of the monsters with them!" he ordered.

The messenger saluted before running as fast he could. Leaving the general alone with the leader of Betrum Adventure Guild.

"So, you think they really attack this time?" the leader, a woman, asked.

"I think it’s a skirmish." The general answer the other party respectfully. He might be the leader of Zell Army, but the person with him is the leader of the entire Adventure Guild in Betrum Nation, which made him the equal of the Head of Nation and General of Army.

"Make sense. If not, there will be more horns blasted." The leader agreed.

The horn bearers had been ordered to blast their horns depending on the amount of monsters. Once for a skirmish group no more than 10. Twice if it’s 100. Thrice for 1 000 and nonstop for a full blown assault of 10 000 and more.

The single blow indicate a small group of 10 or less, so the company should be able to handle them, and bring the corpses for dissection for more information.

"Sir, the company had return with loss of 16 men." The messenger announced. The general and the leader looked shock at the news.

"How?" a company has 100 men. Against 10 monsters, it should be enough without suffering a single casualty.

"They reported a single monster possessed a strength equal to weaker C-rank." And it all make sense. Regular soldiers possessed strength of upper tier D-rank, which could not compare to the weakest of C-rank.

The only way for D-rankers to defeat C-rank opponents is through sheer number or ambushes. And since they fought on the field, on stretches of flat land, the latter strategy could not work.

"At least we know the strength of the monsters." The general decided to look at the silver lining.

"But, these must be an elite skirmish group, send to gauge our strength." The general exclaimed.

The leader snorted, earning her a side glance.

"Anything to add, Lady Calle?" he asked.

"Assuming this is an elite skirmish group is the height of folly." The leader chastise the other man.

"What are you say-"

Raising his hand and rudely cutting of the general, Calle continued, "If we don’t want to be defeated, always hope for the best, but assume the worst. In this case, unless proven otherwise, believe that this is a regular skirmish group, and the entire Swarm is made off C-rank monsters, as their weakest."

Her blue eyes bore into the general, who only nodded in understanding. Glad her message get across the men, Calle looked at the adventurers with her,

"Make sure that adventurers will handle the skirmish group. And only C-rankers and above that do it. The soldiers will focus on containing the monsters but the adventurers will do all the fighting, agree?"

The question was for the general, who nodded reluctantly.

"Good. Send the new orders and make sure the adventurers followed it. If not," her voice turned deeper as the area was blanketed by shadow originating from the leader of Betrum Adventure Guild.
