Chapter 205 Arrival of Help
After stabbing the zombie's head, he pulled out his spear. Blood spurted out and he quickly jumped to the side to avoid getting in contact with the blood. He was afraid that he might get infected with the virus if the zombie's blood came in contact with his skin.
Soon, the zombie fell to the ground lying in its pool of blood. The remaining two zombies showed no signs of fear despite the death of their comrade. They entered the door and clawed their way towards the middle-aged man.
Seeing this, he quickly took a step back and stabbed out his spear, hitting the neck of a zombie. He aimed for the head, but because he was nervous, he failed to aim accurately. Blood leaked out from the zombie's neck. Meanwhile, the other zombie used this chance to pounce at the middle-aged man which almost caught him off guard. Luckily, he managed to evade in the nick of time.
Growl!
The zombie was enraged after its attack missed. It turned its head and charged towards the middle-aged man.
He could feel his heartbeat beating aggressively once more. A surge of adrenaline coursed through his body, giving him strength. He kicked one of the zombies and pulled out his spear. He then stabbed it into the head of a zombie.
Puchi!
He managed to stab its eye sockets, but the cut wasn't deep enough. "Ha!" He grunted as he pushed his spear.
Growl!
The zombie still managed to struggle before it collapsed to the ground. After its death, only one zombie remained.
The middle-aged man felt less scared now that he had killed a few zombies. Without suspense, he stabbed his spear and killed the last zombie.
"Phew!" He breathed a heavy sigh. Killing three zombies in a row almost consumed all his energy.
The middle-aged man quickly checked if there were more zombies outside the barn. There was no one in sight, making him feel relieved. He then grabbed two chickens and snapped their neck. He didn't use his machete to kill them since it had zombie blood in it.
He would bring these two chickens back home to let his family eat some meat.
The middle-aged man tied the chickens to his waist using a nylon string. He then locked the barn and carefully headed up the hill. He warily glanced at his surroundings while he was on his way up. His palms were already covered in sweat. Finally, he reached the top of the hill.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
"It's me. Open the door!" He knocked on the door while looking around.
"Husband, you are back!" He heard his wife's worried voice behind the door, followed by a series of quick footsteps.
When the door was opened, he saw his wife and his kids staring at him in concern.
"Let's go inside first. There are still zombies beneath the hill." He said as he entered and locked the door. He turned his head towards the wall and saw that it had already been patched up.
"Your son patched it up like you said." His wife said while patting the head of their son.
The middle-aged man smiled upon hearing this. "Good job, son." He said while patting his son's shoulder.
The boy smiled in embarrassment.
"We will be having meat tonight." The middle-aged man said while grabbing the chickens tied to his waist.
Seeing this, his wife and kids drooled.
"Shush! Just be quiet. There are still zombies below the hill." The middle-aged man said in a low voice.
The two kids nodded their heads in silence, while his wife stared at him and the bloody machete on his waist. She didn't ask him what happened, but she could already imagine the ordeals he had been through.
"Let me prepare it." She said while forcing out a smile.
The two kids revealed a look of excitement.
Soon, there was a delicious smell of chicken soup in the air. The family of four devoured the meat with relish. They haven't eaten a proper meal since the zombie virus has spread so the ordinary chicken dish tasted like heaven.
After eating dinner, the middle-aged man told his kids to rest.
"What happened down there?" His wife asked. She could no longer hold back her curiosity.
The middle-aged man sighed and leaned on the chair with a heavy look. "Our neighbors… they have already turned into zombies… I hid in the barn when they were chasing after me. To go back here, I was forced to kill them. I killed them…" His voice quivered.
She saw her husband's body trembling as he uttered those words. She quickly embraced her husband in a tight hug. "It's alright. They are no longer the neighbors we once knew. They have already turned into walking corpses. You only protected yourself and there's nothing wrong with it." She consoled her husband.
The two became silent after that, but then… 𝚋𝚎dno𝚟𝚎l.n𝚎𝚝
Tocotocotocotocotocotocoto!
Tocotocotocotocotocotocoto!
It was the sound of a helicopter!
Hearing this, the middle-aged man rose to his feet. "Stay here. I'll see if we can get some help." He said before he headed out.
The middle-aged man looked up and he faintly saw a black helicopter. It seemed to be looking for survivors since the helicopter had its searchlight on.
Seeing this, the middle-aged man was ecstatic. He went back inside the house and grabbed an old flashlight. He then turned it on and waved it around, hoping that the people inside the helicopter would notice him.
To his delight, the helicopter's searchlight flashed in his direction.
He jumped up and down with a look of excitement. They had noticed him!
His wife and kids also stepped out of the house. They also cheered when they saw that the helicopter was slowly moving in their direction.
"We're here! Save us!"
"Thank god! We're safe now!"
The middle-aged man sat on the ground and laughed heartily. His family came over and hugged him tightly.
Not long after, the helicopter landed beside their house and five soldiers jumped down to secure the area.
"Are you guys the only survivors here?" One of the soldiers asked.
The middle-aged man shook his head. "We're not sure about that. We didn't dare get too far down because zombies are roaming around. There are some families in this village, but I don't think they are still alive."
The soldier nodded his head. "Alright. Go inside the helicopter. We will check the village and look for survivors. We will leave at once after that."
"Yes, sir! Thank you very much!" The middle-aged man gratefully said.
The soldier took off his helmet and said while extending his arm. "I am Corporal Gerald. What's your name?"
The middle-aged grabbed his hand and replied. "My name is Timmy. Thank you for coming to save us, Corporal Gerald."
Gerald smiled and shook his head. "It's our duty as soldiers to protect the citizens. Timmy, please bring your family inside the helicopter."
Timmy nodded his head emotionally. He then brought his family inside the helicopter.
"Father, our we safe now?" Timmy's little daughter asked.
Timmy gently smiled at his daughter and stroked her hair. "We are safe now. Corporal Gerald and the other soldiers will protect us."
The little girl smiled brightly upon hearing this. "That's great!"
Timmy noticed that there were other civilians inside the helicopter. Most of them had faces filled with fear. He realized that everyone also had terrible experiences. While he looking at the people, he noticed a young man who had his right hand in his pocket. He looked extremely dodgy with his shifty eyes. He kept on looking around with bloodshot eyes.
Timmy frowned upon seeing him. He felt that this person was quite suspicious.
Timmy kept his sights on the young man. He felt that this guy was hiding something from how he looked. 'Is he bitten?' Timmy thought to himself.
As he thought about this, he got up and walked towards a soldier. He wasn't sure about his suspicions, but he had to report it in case something happened to the young man. "Sir, can you guys check on that young man's hand? He has been hiding his hand in his pocket and he looks very suspicious. It would be disastrous if he is infected with the virus."
The soldier was wearing a helmet, but he had his visor up so Timmy could see the look in his eyes. The soldier furrowed his eyebrows after listening to Timmy's words. "Alright. I'll handle it." He nodded to Timmy.
The soldier walked towards the young man and said in a cold voice. "Sir, can you show me your hand?"
The young man trembled and he nervously stared at the soldier. "I'm not infected! I'm not infected! I promise!" He shook his head repeatedly.
"Sir, show me your hand." The soldier repeated his words, but this time, he was already holding the handle of his gun.
"I said I'm not infected!" The young man shouted in agitation. His quivering voice didn't convince anyone. They could tell that he was hiding something. The soldier also knew this so he pulled out his pistol.
"Last chance. Show me your hand." The soldier muttered while glaring at the young man.
