I can expand my MAGIC ENDLESSLY?!-Chapter 8: The situation of the Estate
Kairos stood by the tall window, watching the late afternoon sun. "I’d like to go outside... just for some fresh air," he said quietly, his gaze shifting to the woman seated across from him. His mother.
Valeria Nozvan.
He had finally learned her name. The library held something called the Legacy Entry, an archive storing information about each decade of the ruling noble house. From it, he had uncovered much about his new life,he was the youngest son of the Nozvan estate, with an older brother, Nolen Nozvan. His father, however, was a commoner. His grandfather, Zaroth Nozvan, had been injured on the left wing frontlines, forcing Valeria to prematurely take his position as the official head of the Nozvan estate.
The word "mother" still felt foreign on his tongue, a strange taste. A whole new empire was there, which didn’t exist in the world he knew. He has to adapt as quickly as possible and also gaze at the possibility of many other things changing.
This was a second chance, and he wouldn’t let it go to waste.
"You may go," she said, casting a glance at him.
"But you will be escorted, at least by a knight."
Kairos nodded. He was a noble now. His days of moving freely, unburdened by oversight, were over. "Yes, Mother," he replied.
"Oh, I thought you would decline..." Valeria spoke, quite amused.
Kairos furrowed his brows a little. "Then can I not take a knight?"
Right away, she shook her head. "No, you have to take one at least... consider it as your punishment too."
Kairos wanted to speak but kept his lips tight. Yeah, he knew very well why she was saying "punishment." It was because of the duel.
A silence lingered until the door creaked open.
Charles, a servant, stepped in with a slight bow. "You called, my lady?"
"Fetch Garen," Valaria said without looking up. "He will accompany Kairos."
Charles bowed again, discreetly exiting the room.
A moment later, a light knock sounded. A man walked in, hair disheveled, a weary yawn escaping his lips. "Yes, Baroness?"
Kairos studied him for a moment. Is this really a knight?.
"Garen, stay with Kairos and have him back before dark."
Garen yawned again, then gave Kairos a side-eyed glance. The moment their eyes met, a flicker of sharpness escaped from within those lazy eyes.
Instantly, the drowsiness vanished from Garen. His back straightened, and he slapped a hand to his chest. "As you wish, Young Master."
"Let’s go, Youngmaster," Garen said, turning on his heel.
Kairos followed with a wry smile. ’Yeah, right, as if she’d let her son be escorted by a useless knight.’
The intense gaze he’d seen and the sudden, precise posture Garen adopted were enough to tell him this man was anything but useless.
They walked through the busy market. Kairos glanced here and there.
The atmosphere was something like the markets usually have. Carts rumble here and there as they pass over the neatly laid cobblestones on the ground, vendors shout out, and a few occasional glances are cast at him. Obviously they recognized him, the son of the noble household, the ruler of the very place they are standing on.
As Kairos was looking...
"Ghaaa!"
A sudden, guttural cry pierced through the market.
Kairos spun around. A soft click sounded beside him as Garen’s hand hovered near his sword hilt.
That was swift, Kairos thought, but didn’t dwell on it as the source of the roar came into view.
A massive beast. Its black fur was coated with brown dust, and great, curved horns like a crown rose from its head. Its body was clad in a few plates of heavy, dull armor, clinging to its hide. It walked slowly, its heavy paws thudding against the ground, shaking the cobblestones beneath its paws.
It was a Gorak. Knights, wearing the crest of his family, surrounded the beast. Behind it, two iron carts groaned across the stone, each loaded with glinting, raw ore.
"Amadite," Kairos murmured.
Garen nodded. "A large haul this time. Must’ve been a clean extraction."
Kairos knew. The Nozvan family owned two such mines, deep at the edge of the Hundred Thousand Mountains. Usually, such valuable ores were guarded by steel worms, creatures known to feed on them. It seemed today the miners had been fortunate.
Slowly, the carts passed by them. The accompanying knights bowed respectfully as they saw Kairos, then continued their escort toward the Nozvan estate. Kairos watched them for a few seconds. Though usually docile, a Gorak could deal immense damage by breathing out scorching flames if threatened. He hadn’t expected to see them here, in the city.
This Baron family wasn’t that simple, as he expected, if they have such beasts and mines of Amadite. But that question is another problem.
Kairos gave a glance here and there. People were normal, going here and there, some were just transporting goods, some were going here to there, and they looked quite normal.
But that was the problem. This place was normal despite being the heart of the city. They have Amadites. They have beasts that are worth many mana stones.
But the moment they left, they rarely saw any guards, and even the ones guarding the beast were on foot, not on warhorses. meaning only one thing, this place was declining after the former Baron Zaroth Nozvan had to step down from power, leaving the duties to his only daughter.
If his conclusion is correct, the place might be engulfed in war pretty soon. ’Is that why the baroness was worried about the engagement?’
As he thought of that, many things started to make sense. It seems Ronan Skylark and Zaroth Nozvan are close. But a Duke family can’t directly help a Baron family, they need leverage. And the engagement was that leverage.
The more he thought, the more complicated the situation started to become.
...
"Let’s go," Kairos muttered, and started heading towards the edge of the city.
Soon they headed towards the outer area. The noises slowly started to die out along with the luster. And a familiar scene appeared. Making him sure his speculation is right.
In the dark alley, people can be seen in tattered clothes, with all dirty and messy hair. Somewhere, lying down onto the dirty floor, gazing at the sky lifelessly.
As he looked, pure hatred could be seen within their eyes, alongside the envy.
They were homeless people, drug addicts, and refugees.
The world doesn’t pity the unworthy. Without something to sway the rich, be it pity, beauty, or a tragic story, no one offers help, be a devil or angel. To break this cycle, strength is the only answer.
He sighed; he saw what he needed to see. In eight years the war will occur between the two kingdoms, Velmore and Veldas.
He hoped this place wouldn’t be bad, but contrary to his expectations, this place will surely be engulfed in the war.
Not to mention, Kairos glanced at the west, where the hundred thousand mountains was located.
’Even if this place survived the war, it won’t survive the Monster surge.’
Monster surge, a phenomenon that hasn’t occurred for the last few centuries but will happen in the year 815 around the winter if he remembers it right. But he was sure it happened in 815.
The cause of that would be the ancient monster sealed underneath the Luminance Kingdom.
This was the year of the 799 eclipse, which means in 16 years a monster wave will occur.
He still doesn’t have any attachments to this place, but that also doesn’t mean he can ignore this, knowing he is the only one who knows the upcoming danger.
He wasn’t a hero, nor did he claim to be. But if he could save people, he would.
Kairos wandered around the market for a few moments before returning to the state. Entering his room, he lay down onto the bed.
He reached for the sword he had bought earlier and set it across his face. The metal caught the light, reflecting his blue eyes staring back at him.
He lay there in silence for a long moment before closing his eyes.
Strength was the only way forward.
Strength was the only way to change the fate of many, whether they are related to him or not related to him.
And to do that, he first has to know his current proposition. And for that he has to know how he can grow from now on.
He sat down, folding his leg. Preparing to dive deep within.
Which also includes his odd element.
